Use screenshots as one part of a repeatable record—not as standalone proof that a competitor served a particular price at an exact time. Capture the same offer under documented conditions, preserve the original image and its URL and timestamp, record a cryptographic hash, and compare both the displayed numbers and the surrounding offer context. For a serious dispute, consult counsel about the applicable rules and consider more complete online-content preservation methods.
What a screenshot can—and cannot—show
A screenshot can show what appeared in a browser during a capture. By itself, it does not establish the source page, the exact time the page was live, or an untouched chain of handling. It is useful visual context in an evidence record, but avoid describing one image as conclusive authentication of a competitor’s website or price.
The Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE) says screenshots are less forensically sound than more inclusive acquisition methods and recommends using them alongside other methods where possible. Define what counts as a price change
Before collecting images, choose the competitor URLs and identify the precise product or plan, market, and offer to monitor. Write down what you consider a meaningful change: the standard price, discounted price, recurring price, package contents, shipping threshold, tax treatment, or availability. Do not treat unlike offers as one price series.

Keep comparisons aligned across these dimensions:
- Product and package: Match the item or plan and what is included.
- Market and currency: Record country or region, currency, tax treatment, and unavoidable charges.
- Promotion: Distinguish list price from promotional price and preserve the offer wording and conditions.
- Fulfilment and availability: Note stock status, shipping charges, and any shipping threshold.
- Visitor context: Record location, login state, and device or viewport where these could affect the display.
- Capture identity: Keep the capture time, final URL after redirects, and integrity record with each image.
These distinctions matter because a changed number may reflect a different bundle, sale, visitor context, or fee rather than a change to the same offer. UK Competition and Markets Authority guidance says, “Prices must be clear, complete and accurate,” and addresses total prices including charges a customer cannot avoid. Fix and document capture conditions
Capture each selected URL on a schedule that suits the offer’s volatility. Dynamic pages may vary with credentials, browser, location, date, and time; SWGDE recommends prioritizing content by volatility. For every capture, record:

- Date and time in UTC, plus the local timezone when relevant.
- Market or country, language, and currency displayed.
- Product or plan identity and offer conditions.
- Operator or capture tool, browser and version where available, and capture settings.
- Viewport or device profile, whether the capture is full-page, and any relevant login, cookie, or location state.
- Errors, limitations, or unusual page behavior.
SWGDE Version 1.1 states: “All available information displayed should be included in the screen capture such as URL and date and time.” When feasible, make the URL and capture date and time visible in the image as well as recording them separately.

Keep the unaltered image in a controlled archive. Make a separate working copy if you need to add labels or annotations; do not overwrite the original. Record a cryptographic hash for each original file and, where useful, for the collection. SWGDE recommends NIST-approved secure hash algorithms to validate and uniquely identify acquired files.

A hash helps detect whether a file changed after it was hashed. It does not, on its own, establish who served the page, when the price was displayed, or whether the page content was true. Preserve the capture record and original together so the hash has useful context.
Compare the price and the offer around it
For each observation, record the product or plan name, displayed price, currency, availability, promotion wording, package contents, and visible fees. Compare those fields to spot candidate changes, then inspect the full screenshot to verify what the number meant in context.

Look for sale badges, strikethrough prices, bundles, shipping thresholds, tax notices, subscription terms, and stock messages. If a page varies by region, account state, device, or promotion, preserve each condition as a separate series rather than combining the captures. A headline price may not represent the complete offer.

Review before using the comparison
- Have a person inspect both captures and confirm that the same product, offer, and market are being compared.
- Use alerts as prompts for review, not as automatic instructions to change your own prices.
- Record plausible alternative explanations, such as a changed bundle, sale badge, shipping threshold, tax notice, location, or stock state.
- If annotations help explain a finding, place them on a derivative copy and retain the original unchanged.

If the screenshots may be used in a formal dispute, ask counsel about the jurisdiction and collection requirements before relying on them. SWGDE describes screenshots as a less forensically sound acquisition method than more inclusive approaches and says they should be used with those methods where possible. The appropriate method depends on the matter; do not assume an image and hash alone will meet a particular legal or evidentiary standard.

Does a file hash prove when a competitor’s price was displayed?
