To turn on NFC on a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings → Connections, tap NFC or NFC and contactless payments, then switch it on. With the screen on and unlocked, hold the back of the phone near an NFC tag to read it. To pay, first add an eligible card to a supported payment service and select it as the default if prompted.
Where is the NFC setting on a Samsung Galaxy?
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap NFC or NFC and contactless payments, then turn on the switch.
Samsung manuals use different wording, and the path can vary by model, region, and software version. If you do not see either option, search for “NFC” in Settings. Not every Galaxy model has NFC; check the specifications for your exact model in your region. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Series User Manual also notes that NFC availability depends on the model.
How do I read an NFC tag with my Samsung phone?
- Turn NFC on and make sure the phone’s screen is on and unlocked.
- Bring the back of the phone close to the tag, near the phone’s NFC antenna.
- If nothing happens, move the phone gradually over the tag to find the antenna’s position.
The antenna is on the back, but its exact location depends on the model. When the phone is close enough, information stored on the tag should appear. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Series User Manual and Galaxy Z Fold6 User Manual describe tag reading this way.
NFC tags or stickers can be programmed for compatible actions, but a tag alone does not enable contactless payments. Compatibility depends on the tag, phone, and software used to program or read it.

How do I pay with NFC on a Samsung phone?
- Open Samsung Wallet or another supported payment service and add an eligible card, following the app’s and card issuer’s setup steps.
- Turn on NFC. If your phone asks, choose the payment service you want as the default contactless-payment app.
- Authenticate as the service requires, then hold the back of the phone near the contactless reader until it confirms the payment.
A reader may still ask for your card PIN. Samsung says a mobile payment service must be registered before NFC payments can be used. See the Samsung Wallet FAQ for U.S. card setup details. Service availability depends on your country, device, card issuer, and payment provider; check local Samsung and issuer eligibility information before relying on a particular card or service.

Try these checks in order, testing the tag or payment terminal again after each relevant change:

- Check that NFC is on. Find the setting under Settings → Connections, or search Settings for “NFC.”
- For payment problems, check the default service. Confirm that the intended Wallet or payment app is selected and that the card setup is complete.
- Adjust phone placement. Bring the back of the phone close to the tag or reader and shift it slowly; antenna positions vary by model.
- Toggle NFC. Turn it off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.
- Remove possible interference. Take off the case or accessory and retry, especially if it contains magnets, cards, or metal.
- For a possible SIM-related issue, reseat the SIM and restart. Samsung Hong Kong lists these as troubleshooting steps for some issues. They are regional guidance, not a universal fix.

Does every Samsung Galaxy support NFC and Samsung Wallet?
No. NFC is not available on every Galaxy, and a phone that supports NFC does not automatically qualify for every payment or Wallet feature. Device, software, country, card issuer, and service requirements can differ.
