To turn on a configured NUC, connect the power adapter specified for its exact model to a working outlet, then press the chassis power button once. If it does not start, first determine whether there is no power, power with no picture, or power with no boot drive; these symptoms point to different checks. A barebone kit may also need compatible memory and storage installed before it can boot.
Before you press the power button
- Find the complete model number and product code on the underside label or purchase record. NUC port locations, power accessories, and startup diagnostics differ by model.
- Set the unit on a stable, hard surface and keep its ventilation openings clear.
- If yours is a barebone kit, check its model guide to confirm that required compatible memory and storage are installed and seated. Intel’s NUC12WSK user guide, for example, covers SO-DIMM memory and M.2 SSD installation for that kit family; those parts and instructions are not universal to every NUC.
- Use the power adapter specified for your model. Check the package and manual rather than assuming an AC cord is included.
- Connect a monitor and, if needed, a keyboard so you can see startup prompts.
How to turn on a NUC
- Connect the compatible power adapter to the NUC.
- Connect the adapter’s AC cord to a working outlet. Make sure both ends are firmly seated.
- Press the power button on the chassis once.
- Wait for a vendor logo, firmware screen, or operating-system startup. The screen and timing vary with the model and configuration; consult the model manual if nothing appears.
For some NUC12WSK kits, the included adapter has a C5 connector, and certain product codes do not include the regional AC cord. Check the exact product code, adapter connector, and local wall-plug standard before buying a cord; not every NUC needs a new one. See Intel’s NUC12WSK guide for the product-specific details.
If the NUC won’t turn on
No lights or other response
Check that the adapter is firmly connected to the unit and outlet, and test the outlet with another device. Confirm that the adapter is the one specified for the full NUC model. If these external checks do not help, consult that model’s support documentation. Intel’s no-boot/no-power troubleshooting article covers Intel NUC laptop kits and mentions testing another power supply, memory, or SSD as diagnostic steps. These are model-specific service checks, not a general instruction to open every NUC or swap parts.
Power light appears, but there is no display
Treat this as a display or startup problem rather than assuming the NUC has no power. Check that the monitor is on, its input is correct, and the video cable is secure; if possible, try another cable or monitor. Memory seating can also matter. Intel’s no-boot/no-power guidance describes three repeated power-button LED blinks as a reason to check memory installation, the module, and its slot. For a steady LED, Intel lists checking cables or monitors and memory, as well as BIOS recovery. LED meanings and recovery steps can vary, so match them to the exact model’s support guide.

The screen says no bootable device was detected
This means the NUC has started far enough to look for a boot drive, but has not found one. Check the BIOS Boot Order for the SSD. If no drive is listed, it may have failed; if the message appears on the first boot after installing a drive, check that the drive is fully seated. Intel includes these checks in its no-boot/no-power article.
Entering BIOS Setup
On Intel NUC systems, press F2 during startup to open BIOS Setup. If the key is missed or does not register, try a wired keyboard: Bluetooth support may not be available before the operating system loads. If a wired keyboard is not detected from a front USB port, try a rear port. If you are using a USB monitor and cannot see startup prompts, temporarily connect an HDMI or DisplayPort monitor. Intel’s BIOS access guidance describes these workarounds.

Intel also documents a Power Button menu for products covered by its laptop-kit troubleshooting article: with the NUC off, hold the power button for about three seconds, release it, then use F2 to enter setup. Do not assume this sequence applies to other models; check your unit’s instructions.

A NUC that stops responding to its power button after a Windows shutdown and starts again only after you unplug and reconnect it may have the specific Fast Startup issue covered by Intel’s Fast Startup troubleshooting article. For the supported NUC products described there, Intel recommends disabling Fast Startup through Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. This is not a general fix for unrelated power failures.

When to consider service or replacement parts
If the model-specific external checks do not resolve the problem, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact unit or contact its support service. BIOS recovery and hardware substitution can be appropriate in some cases, but the procedures and compatible parts depend on the model. Do not buy a generic adapter: the available guidance does not establish one electrical specification for all NUCs. For a barebone kit, choose memory or an SSD only after checking compatibility with its exact model.
