If your Samsung Galaxy reads letters or words aloud as you type, turn off Speak keyboard input aloud. On many recent Galaxy devices, open Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements > Spoken assistance and switch it off. If you want spoken feedback sometimes, change the setting from characters and words to the feedback you prefer instead. Menu labels can vary by model, software version, and region.
Turn off keyboard read-aloud in Accessibility
- Open Settings. If the menu names below do not appear, use Settings search and look for Speak keyboard input aloud.
- Go to Accessibility > Vision enhancements > Spoken assistance.
- Turn off Speak keyboard input aloud. Depending on the device, this setting may instead let you choose whether to hear characters, words, or both, and may include controls for deleted characters and phonetic letter names. Samsung documents this path in its US Spoken assistance guide.
If that setting is not there, check Samsung Keyboard settings
Some Samsung software versions expose keyboard read-aloud controls in Samsung Keyboard’s own settings. Try Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Swipe, touch, and feedback, then turn off the keyboard input read-aloud option. Samsung documents this alternate route in its Japan support guide. The exact label or availability may differ on your device.
Make sure the phone is not using TalkBack
If the phone speaks buttons, headings, and other screen items as well as keyboard input, the issue may be TalkBack, Samsung’s screen reader, rather than keyboard read-aloud. Samsung says TalkBack is the name used on One UI 3.1 and later; on earlier software, the feature may be called Voice Assistant. Check Settings > Accessibility for the screen reader setting. Do not turn off TalkBack if you rely on it for spoken navigation. When it is active, touch interaction changes: Samsung’s guidance says to select an item and double-tap to activate it. Some devices can toggle the screen reader by holding Volume Up and Volume Down together for at least three seconds, but that shortcut may need to be enabled or confirmed first, so it is not a universal first step.

Keep dictation and text-to-speech separate
Voice input turns speech into text
Samsung voice input and Google voice typing listen to you speak and insert text. They are dictation tools, not the feature that reads typed keys aloud. If the phone speaks while you type, disabling dictation is unlikely to address the cause. Samsung explains the keyboard voice-input options in its Samsung Keyboard guide.
Text-to-speech is a broader system feature
Text-to-speech can provide speech output for apps and services; it is separate from the Accessibility screen reader, although TalkBack uses the built-in text-to-speech system. Samsung places its controls under Settings > General management > Text-to-speech. If speech occurs only in one app, check that app’s spoken-content or navigation settings before changing a device-wide option. See Samsung’s accessibility overview.

Choose the setting that matches what you hear

Samsung’s accessibility instructions note that available features can vary by model and software version. If neither documented keyboard path matches your phone, use Settings search for the setting name or check the support instructions for your Galaxy model and region.
