To hide Google Messages’ documented chat shortcuts, open a conversation, tap More options (the three-dot menu), choose Suggestions in chat, and turn off Suggested actions. That setting covers shortcuts such as photo attachment, calendar invites, Meet, location sharing, and GIF search. It is not a universal switch for suggested replies, Gemini suggestions, notification controls, or games.
Turn off Suggested actions in a chat
-
Open the Google Messages app and a conversation.
-
Tap More options, shown as the three-dot menu.
-
Tap Suggestions in chat.
-
Turn off Suggested actions.
These are Google’s documented steps. The shortcuts can offer calendar invites, attaching recent photos, Google Meet video calls, location sharing, and GIF search. See Google Messages Help.
Menu labels can vary by app version or rollout. If you do not see that route, check the app’s profile icon, then Messages settings, for a similarly named Suggestions or Suggestions and actions setting. Treat that newer route as version-dependent; user reports describe changing menus, not a universal path.
Identify which suggestion you want to remove
Google Messages uses different kinds of suggestions. Find where the item appears before changing settings: switching off Suggested actions may leave other features unchanged.

| What you see | What it is | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Action icons or prompts in a conversation | Suggested actions, such as photo, calendar, Meet, location, or GIF shortcuts | More options > Suggestions in chat > Suggested actions, according to Google’s instructions. |
| Suggested text responses | Suggested replies, often called Smart Reply | Look in Suggestions settings for a separate Smart Reply control if the replies remain. Community reports describe separate controls, but the reviewed official help does not establish one route for every device or version. See this Google Messages discussion. |
| Information prompts about topics such as movies or restaurants | Gemini suggestions in Messages; these are distinct from action shortcuts | Google’s Gemini in Messages help explains the feature and how to view or delete tapped suggestions in My Activity. It does not say that turning off Suggested actions disables these prompts. |
| Suggested controls or replies in the notification shade | Android notification suggestions, rather than chat suggestions | Check the phone’s system notification settings. Reports of a separate route are anecdotal and may depend on device and Android version; see this community discussion. |
| Games mentioned as playable in conversations | A prospective feature in reporting, not a confirmed generally available setting | No documented games switch is established in the reviewed October 7, 2026 report or Google Messages help. |
What Google says about Gemini suggestions and privacy
Google says Gemini suggestions in Messages are generated using technology built into the device, and that conversations are not sent to Gemini or Google servers as part of generating those suggestions. If you tap a suggestion, Messages asks Gemini to search the term. Google says that, for signed-in users, the search appears in My Activity and only the search terms—not the conversation—are sent to Gemini. Google also says it receives the suggestion category and whether it was tapped to improve suggestions. These are Google’s statements on its help page, not an independent audit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are games available in Google Messages?
A report dated October 7, 2026 says Google may be preparing games playable in conversations. That describes a prospective feature; it does not establish general availability or a setting to turn games off. The official help reviewed documents Suggested actions but does not confirm an in-chat games feature. If you mean game ads or recommendations elsewhere on your phone, those are a different issue from the in-chat feature in that report.
