To stop Siri from responding on an Apple TV, open Settings > General > Siri, then switch Siri off. Apple documents this route for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. On Apple TV 4K, deleting stored Siri requests, limiting Apple’s use of interaction audio, and blocking microphone access for individual apps are separate controls, so choose the setting that matches your privacy concern.
How do I turn off Siri listening on Apple TV?
The main Siri switch is a device setting. It does not require a subscription, an accessory, or a change to your Apple Account.
- From the Apple TV Home Screen, open Settings.
- Select General.
- Select Siri.
- Turn Siri off.
After the switch is off, Siri is disabled on that Apple TV. The exact wording or placement of nearby options can differ with the Apple TV model, tvOS version, language, and region. If your menus look different, start in Settings > General and look for Siri or the privacy controls described below.

Turning off Siri prevents the Apple TV’s Siri feature from handling new Siri requests. It is the correct action when your goal is simply to disable Siri.

It is not a universal microphone shutoff. Apple TV 4K has independent controls for deleting Siri and dictation history, deciding whether Apple may store and review interaction audio to improve Siri and dictation, and granting microphone access to individual apps. Changing one of these settings does not automatically change the others according to Apple’s settings guides.
This distinction matters because “stop Apple TV from listening” can mean several different things:
- Disable Siri: use the Siri switch in Settings > General > Siri.
- Remove previously associated requests: use Siri & Dictation History on Apple TV 4K.
- Limit optional audio sharing for improvement: review Improve Siri & Dictation in Privacy & Security.
- Stop another app from using a microphone: change that app’s permission under Privacy & Security > Microphone.

The table separates controls that are easy to confuse. Disabling Siri is not the same operation as deleting history or changing app permissions.

Turn off Siri on Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K
Use the built-in settings
Begin at the Home Screen rather than inside a streaming app. The path is the same in Apple’s current support instructions for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K:
- Press the TV button or otherwise return to the Home Screen.
- Open Settings.
- Open General.
- Open Siri.
- Move to the Siri switch and select it so the feature is off.
If the switch is already off, Siri is disabled even if the remote still has a Siri button. The button’s presence does not prove that the service is active.
What happens to the Siri button
On a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote, holding the dedicated Siri button is the documented way to start a Siri request. With Siri disabled, pressing the button should not provide normal Siri results. A Siri-capable third-party remote also sends audio to Apple TV only when its microphone is explicitly activated with its dedicated Siri button, according to Apple’s platform-security documentation. That explicit activation behavior is separate from the Apple TV’s Siri on/off setting.
AirPods and other Siri listening options
Apple’s Apple TV 4K Siri settings can also show an AirPods listening option. If that option appears on your device, it is an accessory-related choice within the Siri settings, not a replacement for the main Siri switch. Turn Siri off first if you want Siri unavailable on the Apple TV, then review any AirPods-related option separately if you use compatible AirPods. The name and availability of this option can vary by Apple TV hardware, tvOS version, language, and region.

This is another reason not to treat every item in the Siri menu as the same control. The device-level switch governs whether Siri is available; history, improvement sharing, app microphone permissions, and accessory-related options address different parts of the experience.

Delete Siri and dictation history on Apple TV 4K
Turning Siri off controls future use; it does not serve as a deletion command for earlier interactions. If you want to remove the Siri and dictation history associated with the Apple TV 4K, use the separate history action:
- Open Settings from the Home Screen.
- Select General.
- Select Siri.
- Select Siri & Dictation History.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation to delete the associated history.
Apple’s Apple TV 4K user guide describes this action as deleting all associated Siri and dictation history from Apple servers. The option is about previously associated history; it is not the switch that disables Siri. If you do not see this item, your hardware, tvOS version, language, or region may not expose the same menu.
Limit optional Siri and dictation audio sharing
Apple TV 4K has an analytics setting named Improve Siri & Dictation. Apple describes the enabled setting as permission for Apple to store and review audio of Siri and dictation interactions from that Apple TV for improvement purposes. This is a privacy-sharing choice, not the primary Siri availability switch.
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Open Analytics and Improvements.
- Review Improve Siri & Dictation and set it according to your preference.
Apple places this control outside the Siri menu. Therefore, turning Siri off and changing this option are two independent decisions. If your concern is that Apple may retain or review interaction audio, check this control even after disabling Siri; if your only goal is to make Siri unavailable, the device-level Siri switch is the relevant action.
Stop individual apps from using the microphone
Some Apple TV 4K apps can request microphone access for features other than Siri. Review those permissions separately:
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Select Microphone.
- Review the listed apps and turn access off for any app that should not use a microphone.
This screen controls app permissions; it does not replace the Siri switch. An app can have a microphone permission decision even when Siri is disabled, and changing an app’s permission does not re-enable or disable Siri.
How the remote microphone is activated
Apple’s documented remote behavior helps explain why a remote may contain a microphone without continuously sending a request. A Siri-capable third-party TV remote sends audio data to Apple TV when the user explicitly activates the remote microphone with its dedicated Siri button. On Apple’s Siri Remote, holding the Siri button is the normal gesture for starting a request.
This behavior should not be read as a guarantee about every microphone pathway on the television, an HDMI device, or an installed app. Use the Siri switch for Siri, the Microphone permissions screen for apps, and the privacy analytics control for optional Siri and dictation improvement sharing.

If Apple TV is speaking aloud, check VoiceOver
If Apple TV reads icon names, settings, or other interface elements aloud, Siri may not be involved. Apple identifies VoiceOver as a separate accessibility feature.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select VoiceOver.
- Turn VoiceOver off if you do not want spoken descriptions of the interface.
VoiceOver has its own switch and is not a Siri feature. Disabling Siri therefore will not necessarily stop VoiceOver narration.
Why the Siri option may be missing
Hardware support
Apple’s support instructions consulted for this guide list Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K (first generation and later) as supported hardware. Older or different Apple TV hardware may not provide the same Siri controls.
Language and region
Siri availability and commands depend on the supported language, country or region, and the Apple Account billing region. A Siri menu that is unavailable, limited, or different from the instructions may reflect regional or language support rather than a fault.
tvOS and menu variation
Apple warns that not all features and content are available in every region or on every Apple TV model. Menu labels can also change between tvOS releases. If you cannot find an exact nested item, check Settings > General for Siri, then check Privacy & Security for history, analytics, and microphone controls. Do not assume that an option documented for Apple TV 4K appears on Apple TV HD.
Restrictions or managed devices
If a setting appears unavailable or cannot be changed, review any restrictions configured on the Apple TV. A device managed through a household, school, or organization profile can expose fewer controls. The available evidence establishes hardware, language, region, and software differences as causes of variation; it does not establish one universal restriction path for every installation.
Verify that Siri is really off
Use a short check after changing the switch:
- Return to the Home Screen and open Settings > General > Siri again.
- Confirm that the Siri switch remains off after leaving the page.
- Pressing the remote’s Siri button should no longer produce normal Siri interaction.
- If audio or spoken labels continue, determine whether the source is VoiceOver or an app rather than Siri.
- If your concern is stored history or optional audio sharing, inspect the separate Apple TV 4K controls instead of treating the Siri switch as a deletion or analytics setting.
Common misunderstandings and the correct fix
“I turned off Siri, but an app still asks for microphone access.”
Siri and app microphone permissions are separate. Open Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Microphone and change the permission for that app on Apple TV 4K.

“I disabled Siri, but Apple TV still reads the screen.”
Check Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver. VoiceOver is independent of Siri and can narrate interface elements.
“The instructions mention a setting that I cannot find.”
Check the Apple TV model, tvOS version, language, country or region, and Apple Account billing region. Apple’s guides caution that features and labels are not identical across all hardware and regions. Look under Settings > General first, then under Privacy & Security for the related controls.
“My remote has a Siri button, so Siri must still be listening.”
A Siri button is an input control, not proof that Siri is enabled or continuously active. Apple documents Siri requests as being initiated by holding the dedicated button; its security documentation describes audio transmission from a Siri-capable third-party remote when the user explicitly activates that microphone.

Which Apple TV controls should you change?
Use this decision sequence when the phrase “turn off listening” is too broad:
- If you do not want Siri requests handled at all, turn Siri off in Settings > General > Siri.
- If you also want to remove earlier Siri and dictation history, use Siri & Dictation History on Apple TV 4K.
- If you want to limit Apple’s optional storage and review of Siri or dictation interaction audio, review Improve Siri & Dictation under Privacy & Security > Analytics and Improvements.
- If a particular app should not access a microphone, revoke that app’s permission under Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- If the television is narrating its interface, inspect Accessibility > VoiceOver.
These controls address different stages of the audio path: whether Siri is available, what happens to associated history, whether optional improvement sharing is enabled, which apps may use a microphone, and whether accessibility narration is active.

For the most complete device-level review, work through the controls in order. First, confirm the Siri switch is off. Next, on Apple TV 4K, delete Siri & Dictation History if you want earlier associated history removed. Then inspect Improve Siri & Dictation under Analytics and Improvements if you do not want the optional storage and review described by Apple. Finally, check Microphone for individual apps and VoiceOver if the television is speaking interface text.
There is no single “turn off every audio feature” button documented for Apple TV. These settings are intentionally separate because they address Siri availability, historical data, optional improvement sharing, app permissions, and accessibility narration.
What you do not need
You do not need to buy a different remote, a microphone accessory, or a manual to disable Siri. The built-in Siri switch completes the core task. A dedicated Siri button is used to initiate a request; replacing the remote is not a substitute for turning Siri off in tvOS.
