To stop your Mac from responding to “Hey Siri” or “Siri” while keeping Siri available, open Apple menu > System Settings > Siri (called Apple Intelligence & Siri on some versions), then change Requests to click or keyboard activation. To disable Siri entirely, choose Turn Off Siri. To remove stored Siri and Dictation data, use Delete Siri & Dictation History; this is a separate action from turning off future audio sharing.
The labels and available controls vary by macOS version, language and region. The instructions below cover the current Siri controls as well as the additional conversation-history settings shown on Macs with Siri AI features.
Choose the privacy change you actually want
macOS separates three different controls. Turning off the voice trigger prevents hands-free activation but leaves Siri available from the menu bar, a keyboard shortcut or another manual control. Turning Siri off removes Siri access until you enable it again. Deleting history removes qualifying past Siri and Dictation recordings and transcripts, while the setting that allows Apple to use future audio recordings is controlled elsewhere.

Check which Siri panel your Mac uses
Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and look in the sidebar for Siri. On some macOS releases the panel is named Apple Intelligence & Siri. The wording can also vary with your language, region and Siri feature set. If you do not see an instruction’s exact label, open the panel with the closest name and look for the same control.

Macs that use the newer Siri AI interface may show controls for conversation retention in addition to the basic voice-activation settings. A Mac can therefore have Siri listening disabled while still displaying earlier AI conversations in the Siri app until those conversations are removed or their retention period expires.
Stop voice-triggered listening while keeping Siri available
This is the right choice when you want Siri on demand but do not want the microphone waiting for the wake phrase. Siri will still work when you deliberately click its control or use the configured keyboard shortcut.
- Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
- Select Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Open the Requests control.
- Replace “Hey Siri” or “Siri” with the click or keyboard-activation option shown in the panel.
After this change, saying the wake phrase should no longer start a request. Use the Siri icon, menu-bar control or keyboard shortcut to launch Siri manually. This setting affects activation, not stored requests: it does not erase earlier audio or transcripts and it does not alter the Improve Siri & Dictation preference.
Turn Siri off completely
Use the master switch when you do not want Siri available on the Mac at all.

- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Choose Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Click Turn Off Siri.
- Confirm the change when macOS asks.
Some releases expose Siri Classic as an alternative after the newer Siri AI features are disabled. That option changes which Siri experience is available; it is not a history-deletion command. If you later want Siri back, return to the same panel and enable the available Siri option.
Delete Siri and Dictation history
Deleting history is separate from disabling Siri. It is also separate from the audio-sharing switch described later. Use this procedure to remove the Siri and Dictation data covered by Apple’s deletion control.
- Connect the Mac to the internet. Apple requires an internet connection for this deletion request.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri.
- Choose Delete Siri & Dictation History.
- Click Delete to confirm.
Apple describes this control as deleting audio recordings and transcripts associated with a random identifier that are less than six months old. That scope is narrower than a promise that every Siri-related record of every age disappears, so retain the qualification when interpreting the result. The command covers both Siri and Dictation data included in Apple’s documented scope.

If the button is unavailable or the request does not complete, first confirm that the Mac is online and then reopen the Siri settings panel. A label that is missing from one panel may appear under Apple Intelligence & Siri on another macOS release.

Stop Apple from receiving future Siri and Dictation audio for improvement
Deleting existing history does not change the consent choice for future recordings. Apple states: “Deleting Siri and Dictation history doesn’t change the choice you made about sharing audio recordings.” To stop future sharing, change the separate analytics setting:
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Open Analytics & Improvements.
- Turn Improve Siri & Dictation off.
This switch governs future sharing. It does not perform the history-deletion operation, so use both procedures if you want to remove qualifying past data and decline future audio sharing.
Remove conversations that remain visible in Siri AI
On Macs with Siri AI conversation features, the Siri app can display conversations separately from the basic Siri and Dictation history control. If an old exchange remains visible after you delete Siri and Dictation history, remove it from the Siri app itself.
Delete one conversation
- Open the Siri app.
- Locate the conversation you no longer want displayed.
- Use the conversation’s delete command and confirm if macOS asks.
Delete multiple conversations
- Open the Siri app.
- Enter its conversation-management or selection view.
- Select the conversations to remove.
- Choose the delete command and confirm.
The exact selection control can differ between macOS releases, so follow the command shown in the Siri app rather than assuming a particular keyboard shortcut. Deleting conversations in the app addresses the visible AI conversation list; it is not a substitute for the system-level Delete Siri & Dictation History command or the Improve Siri & Dictation switch.

Set automatic conversation retention
To control how long future Siri AI conversations remain available, open System Settings > Siri and find Keep Conversations. Apple documents retention choices such as 30 days and one year. When the selected period ends, older conversations are permanently deleted. This retention setting controls the conversation history shown by Siri AI; it does not replace the separate controls for voice activation, Siri itself or audio-sharing consent.

Verify the change you intended
You want Siri silent until you invoke it
- In System Settings > Siri, confirm Requests is set to click or keyboard activation rather than “Hey Siri” or “Siri”.
- Test the wake phrase without touching the Siri icon. It should not open a request.
- Test the manual method you chose so you know how to access Siri when needed.
You want Siri unavailable
- Return to System Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Confirm that the panel offers Turn On Siri rather than Turn Off Siri, indicating that Siri is currently disabled.
You want past data removed
- Run Delete Siri & Dictation History while connected to the internet.
- For Macs with Siri AI, check the Siri app separately and delete conversations that remain visible.
You want no future audio sharing
- Open Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
- Confirm Improve Siri & Dictation is off. Do not assume that deleting history changed this switch.
Common problems and the appropriate fix
The setting is called Apple Intelligence & Siri, not Siri
Use the panel named Apple Intelligence & Siri. Apple changes labels by macOS release, language and region, but the relevant controls—Requests, Turn Off Siri and Delete Siri & Dictation History—remain grouped in that Siri settings area when supported.
I disabled “Hey Siri,” but Siri still appears when I click the icon
That is expected. Changing Requests disables voice-triggered activation while retaining manual Siri access. Use Turn Off Siri instead if you want to remove manual access as well.

History deletion and sharing consent are independent. Open Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and turn off Improve Siri & Dictation to change the future-sharing choice.

The Siri AI conversation list still contains entries
Use the Siri app’s conversation controls to delete individual or multiple entries. Then review Keep Conversations in System Settings > Siri and select the retention period you want. The app’s conversation list has its own controls in addition to system-level Siri and Dictation history.
Delete Siri & Dictation History does not work
Check the internet connection first, because Apple requires connectivity for the deletion request. Reopen the relevant Siri settings panel and look for the command under Apple Intelligence & Siri if it is not present under Siri. If the option is still absent, the Mac’s macOS version, language or region may not expose the same control.
A practical privacy sequence
If your goal is to minimize Siri activity as much as the available settings allow, complete the controls in this order:

- Change Requests to click or keyboard activation, or choose Turn Off Siri if you do not want Siri available.
- Run Delete Siri & Dictation History while online.
- Turn off Improve Siri & Dictation under Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
- If Siri AI is enabled, delete visible conversations in the Siri app and set Keep Conversations to the retention period you prefer.
This sequence handles activation, the Siri service, qualifying past data, future audio-sharing consent and the separate AI conversation list without treating any one switch as if it controlled all five.
