If your iPhone’s screen responds, turn it off with the Power Off slider. If it is frozen or unresponsive, use the force-restart button sequence for your model: Face ID models use Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold the Side button; iPhone 7 models use Side plus Volume Down; iPhone 6s and earlier use Home plus Side or Top.
Turn off an iPhone normally
A normal shutdown uses the on-screen Power Off slider, so the display must respond.

iPhone with Face ID
- Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button until the sliders appear.
- Drag the Power Off slider.
iPhone with a Home button
- Press and hold the Side button until the sliders appear.
- Drag the Power Off slider.
Use Settings or Control Center
- Settings: Open Settings, tap General, scroll down, tap Shut Down, then drag the slider.
- Control Center: Open Control Center, touch and hold the power control at the top right, then drag the slider.
These options are useful when the screen works but you would rather not use the hardware-button shutdown sequence. Apple’s guide to turning iPhone on or off shows the normal shutdown options.

Force restart is for a phone that is not responding and cannot be turned off and back on normally. It restarts the iPhone; it is not a factory reset and does not erase the phone. Follow the sequence for your model, and keep holding the final button until the Apple logo appears.

iPhone with Face ID
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, then release it.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down together.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then release the buttons.
iPhone 6s and earlier
- Press and hold the Home button and the Side button or Top button together.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then release the buttons.
Apple’s force-restart instructions and restart guidance describe these model groups. The button sequence differs across older iPhones, so do not use one group’s steps for another.
Turn the iPhone back on
After a normal shutdown, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

What to do if the iPhone still will not turn on
- Charge the iPhone for one hour, then try turning it on again.
- If it still will not power on, consult Apple’s troubleshooting steps for an iPhone that will not turn on or has a black screen; Apple says service may be needed if the phone remains off.
Use a charging cable and power adapter compatible with your iPhone’s connector. Charging is a step for a phone that will not power on; it is not a prerequisite for attempting a force restart.
