To stop live mid-roll ads on a looping YouTube livestream, open YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go live, edit the stream’s Monetization settings, select Manual for live mid-rolls, and insert no ad breaks. YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served in Manual mode when no breaks are inserted. This setting is for live mid-rolls; it does not necessarily turn off pre-roll ads or other monetization.
Turn off live mid-rolls in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open an existing scheduled stream or create and schedule a stream.
- Open Edit → Monetization.
- If you want to retain monetization generally, leave the stream’s monetization setting On.
- Under live ad settings, choose Manual and do not insert any mid-roll breaks. YouTube Help says: “If you do not insert any mid-roll ad breaks, no mid-rolls will be served.” See YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream.
The documented procedure is the same for a looping stream: YouTube’s instructions do not describe a separate setting or special behavior for loops. Interface labels can change, so use the live stream editor’s Monetization settings as your landmarks.
What the live mid-roll modes do
| Mode | Who controls break timing | What you can set | Can you avoid inserting breaks? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube schedules breaks. | Frequency: Low, Medium, or High. | No; YouTube schedules breaks automatically. |
| Scheduled | You choose the interval. | Break every 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Choose Manual instead if you want no creator-inserted breaks. |
| Manual | You insert breaks. | Place breaks when you choose. | Yes. Insert none; YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served. |
YouTube notes that Scheduled or Manual modes may have lower earnings potential than Automatic. That is a tradeoff, not a guarantee of earnings: if avoiding interruptions is the priority, Manual with no inserted breaks is the documented choice.
What this setting does—and does not—turn off
It targets live mid-rolls
Choosing Manual with no breaks prevents live mid-rolls according to YouTube’s live-stream instructions. It does not mean every ad type is disabled. YouTube describes pre-roll and display ads as automatically turned on when monetization is on for a live stream. Turning monetization off is a broader choice than changing the live mid-roll mode.

It is different from delaying automatic ads
The Live Control Room’s Delay ads control pauses automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes. It is temporary, and manually placed mid-rolls can still display during the delay. It is not a substitute for removing manual breaks or selecting Manual with none inserted. Details are in YouTube Help’s live-stream ad settings.
A livestream replay has its own uncertainty
YouTube separately documents mid-roll settings for eligible long-form videos and allows the mid-roll setting to be turned off for an eligible video. The live-stream documentation does not establish whether changing the live setting affects an archived replay retroactively. If the replay matters, open that video’s own Monetization settings and check them directly. See YouTube Help: Manage mid-roll ad breaks in long videos and YouTube Help: Turn off ads for individual videos.

What viewers may experience
- An ad slot is not guaranteed to serve; YouTube says factors include slot quality, advertiser demand, and viewer experience.
- Viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching the livestream. Viewers who do see one rejoin after it ends or they skip it.
- YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. This is a platform-reported comparison from that period, not a prediction for an individual channel or a reason every creator should use automatic ads.
