Windows 11 does not have a single Turn off Microsoft Family Safety switch. Family Safety is controlled through the Microsoft family-group dashboard or the Microsoft Family Safety app, and the available action depends on whether the account is an Organizer or a Member.

Use the instructions below to disable only the control you no longer need—or remove the account from the family group entirely.

First, identify what you want to turn off

Microsoft Family Safety controls are separate. Turning off activity reporting, for example, does not remove screen-time schedules or website filters.

Control Where to disable it
Activity reporting Family Safety website or app
Website and search filtering Family Safety website, under the Edge tab
Screen-time limits Family Safety website or app
App and game limits family.microsoft.com
All Family Safety membership and features Leave or remove the account from the family group

You generally need to sign in as the family Organizer to change restrictions imposed on another account. A Member cannot normally remove organizer-enforced restrictions, including restrictions applied to an adult Member.

Turn off activity reporting

Activity reporting controls whether usage reports are shared with the family organizer. It does not disable screen-time limits, content filters, or app restrictions.

Using the Family Safety website

  1. Open account.microsoft.com/family/home/settings.
  2. Sign in with an Organizer account.
  3. Select the relevant family member.
  4. On each applicable platform tab, turn Activity reporting off.

Microsoft provides separate tabs for Windows, Xbox, Edge, and Mobile. Check each tab that you want to change; disabling reporting on Windows does not necessarily disable reporting for the other platforms.

Using the Microsoft Family Safety app

  1. Open Microsoft Family Safety.
  2. Select the family member.
  3. Select Settings in the upper-right corner.
  4. Turn Activity reporting off for the applicable categories, such as Windows, Xbox, Mobile, Edge, or Spending.

Turn off website and search filtering

Family Safety web filtering applies to Microsoft Edge when the family member is signed in to Edge with their Microsoft account. It is not a general filter that applies to every browser in Windows 11.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard.
  2. Select Family Safety from the left-side menu.
  3. Find the family member and select More (…) beside their name.
  4. Select Go to overview.
  5. Open the Edge tab.
  6. Turn Filter inappropriate websites and searches off.

The same page may contain additional restrictions. Review these separately:

  • Only use allowed websites: turn this off to stop allow-list-only browsing.
  • Always allow educational websites: change this independent toggle if necessary.

Turn off screen-time limits

Screen-time schedules are separate from activity reporting and website filtering. You must disable them for each relevant platform.

From the web dashboard

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in as an Organizer.
  2. Select the family member’s tile.
  3. Select Windows, Xbox, or Mobile.
  4. Select More (…) beside the relevant schedule or limit.
  5. Select Turn limits off.

Mobile screen-time controls in Microsoft’s current instructions apply to Android devices. Windows and Xbox limits are shown under their respective platform tabs.

From the mobile app

  1. Open Microsoft Family Safety.
  2. Select the family member.
  3. Select Windows or Xbox.
  4. Select More (…).
  5. Select Turn limits off.

Limits apply only to devices connected to the family group. Microsoft also counts time while the user is signed in, including idle time. On Xbox, the timer can continue while the account remains signed in even if somebody else is using the console.

Turn off app and game limits

  1. Visit family.microsoft.com and sign in.
  2. Select the family member.
  3. Select the relevant platform: Windows, Xbox, or Mobile.
  4. Select Apps and games.
  5. Turn the App and game limits toggle off.

App and game limits are independent of screen-time schedules and website filters. Depending on the connected devices, these limits can apply across Windows, Xbox, and Android.

Remove an account from the Microsoft family group

Removing an account is the broadest option. It removes the person’s access to Family Safety features and shared products or services supplied through the family group, such as a Microsoft 365 Family subscription. It does not delete the person’s Microsoft account.

Remove yourself

  1. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/family.
  2. Select More (…) next to your name.
  3. Select Leave family group.
  4. Select Remove to confirm.

An Organizer removes another member

  1. Sign in to account.microsoft.com/family with an Organizer account.
  2. Select More (…) next to the person’s name.
  3. Select Remove from family group.
  4. Select Remove to confirm.

If Remove from family group is missing for a child account, select Remove consent for this child’s account first. Return to the family group, then select Remove from family group.

Refresh Family Safety on Windows 11

If restrictions remain on a device after an adult leaves the group or after settings are changed, Microsoft’s documented reset procedure is to run the Family Safety refresh task locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type cmd and select OK.
  3. Run this exact command:
schtasks /run /tn "MicrosoftWindowsShellFamilySafetyRefreshTask"
  1. Restart Windows 11.

Run the command on each affected device. This is a refresh procedure for lingering enforcement; it is not a replacement for changing the account’s settings online.

What if an adult account is still restricted?

Check the account’s role in the family group:

  • Adult not shown in a family group: run the FamilySafetyRefreshTask command above and restart the computer.
  • Adult with the Organizer role: run the same command on each affected device, then restart.
  • Adult with the Member role: only the Organizer can currently change organizer-enforced safety settings. The adult Member does not have a documented self-service switch to disable them.

Microsoft has indicated that a future update may allow adult Members to opt in or out of organizer management. That option is not part of the current documented procedure.

Do not confuse Family Safety with Windows Activity history

Windows 11 has a separate local setting at Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history. Turning off Store my activity history on this device stops Windows from storing local activity history, but it does not turn off Microsoft Family Safety reporting or restrictions.

It also does not disable screen-time limits, app and game limits, or Edge web filtering. Those controls must be changed through the Family Safety website or app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Send my activity history to Microsoft option was deprecated for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 by the January 23, 2024—KB5034204 update. Older builds may still display it.

FAQ

Can I turn off Microsoft Family Safety from Windows 11 Settings?

No. Windows 11 does not provide one Settings switch that disables all Family Safety controls. Use the Microsoft Family Safety website or app, or leave/remove the account from the family group.

Does turning off Activity history disable Family Safety?

No. Windows Activity history and Microsoft Family Safety activity reporting are separate systems. You must change Family Safety settings from the family dashboard or app.

Can a Family Safety Member disable restrictions without the Organizer?

Generally, no. The Organizer controls organizer-enforced restrictions, including those applied to an adult Member.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does removing someone from the family group delete their Microsoft account?

No. Removing the person ends their Family Safety membership and access to shared family products, but it does not delete their Microsoft account.

Why is Microsoft Edge still blocking websites after I changed Family Safety?

Confirm that the Edge filter, allow-list mode, blocked-site entries, and other Edge controls were changed for the correct family member. If restrictions linger after leaving or removal, run the Family Safety refresh task and restart Windows.

The Bottom Line

There is no universal Windows 11 switch for Microsoft Family Safety. An Organizer must change reporting, web filters, screen-time schedules, and app limits separately in the Family Safety dashboard or app. To remove all Family Safety membership features, leave or remove the account from the family group; if old restrictions remain locally, run the documented refresh command and restart each affected PC.
