If Netflix looks washed out or too dark, turn off HDR in Netflix if your device offers the setting; otherwise, check the device’s HDR and picture controls. The steps differ for phones and tablets, TVs and streaming devices, and Windows PCs. Disabling HDR is a useful test, not a guaranteed fix.
Turn off HDR in Netflix on a phone or tablet
- Open Netflix and select a profile.
- Tap My Netflix, then open the menu and choose App Settings.
- Turn off HDR Playback if the option appears.
Netflix says this control is available on supported mobile devices and is conditional on an eligible Premium plan and an HDR-compatible device. If you do not see it, try the brightness control in the video player and your device’s screen-brightness setting instead. Netflix’s guidance is in its Help Center article about shows or movies that are too dark.
Turn off HDR in Netflix on a TV or streaming device
- From the Netflix home screen, open Get Help. Depending on the interface, it may be under the profile icon at the top or at the bottom of a left-side menu.
- Choose Video, then select HDR Off if it is available.
Some HDR-compatible TVs do not provide this Netflix option. If it is missing, check the TV or streaming device’s own picture and HDR settings; menu names and paths vary by maker and model, so consult the device manual or manufacturer’s support.

Check Windows HDR settings when Netflix looks wrong
If Netflix HDR video is too dark or washed out
In Windows, inspect the Stream HDR video control in HDR settings. You can also try switching Windows HDR off as a troubleshooting test. Windows display settings may affect HDR video playback, but the correct adjustment depends on the PC and display. See Microsoft’s HDR settings in Windows.

If SDR apps look dark while Windows HDR is on
This is a different symptom from Netflix HDR video itself looking wrong. Microsoft notes that some SDR apps can appear darker on an HDR display. Check Windows’ HDR/SDR brightness balance and its related troubleshooting suggestions. If an app does not respond after you change the balance, restart that app.
Calibrate a supported built-in display
Windows HDR video calibration can help balance detail in bright and dark scenes on a supported built-in display and can restore default calibration settings. It does not calibrate external displays. Follow Microsoft’s built-in HDR display calibration instructions.

Why Netflix can look washed out or too dark
HDR appearance depends on the display and its settings. A mismatch in how the device and display handle HDR can make the image look wrong, but the official guidance does not identify one cause that explains every TV, streaming box, browser, or display pipeline. Turning HDR off is therefore a practical way to test whether HDR is involved, rather than a universal repair.
Netflix lists Windows HDR playback eligibility requirements including Windows 11, a supported browser or Windows app, compatible graphics hardware, an HDR-capable setup, a supported plan and playback quality, and a steady connection of 15 megabits per second or higher. These are requirements for eligibility, not evidence that any one requirement causes dark or washed-out images. Details are in Netflix’s Windows computer and tablet guidance.

When to check your cable, port, or picture mode
If Netflix offers no HDR toggle or the picture remains poor, check the device’s brightness, picture mode, and HDR controls, then seek model-specific guidance from its manufacturer. Netflix says supported devices, cables, ports, and plans affect whether 4K/HDR is available; if a part of the setup is unsupported, playback uses the highest quality available for that setup. This is compatibility guidance, not a claim that replacing an HDMI cable will fix tone mapping or brightness. See Netflix’s video-quality guidance. A replacement cable, streaming device, or TV is not an established routine fix for this symptom.
