To turn off most newer Samsung Galaxy phones, press and hold the Side button and Volume Down together until the power menu appears. Tap Power off, then tap it again to confirm. If the Side button opens Bixby or another assistant, use Quick Settings instead.
Turn off your Galaxy with the buttons
- With the phone on, press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button together for a few seconds.
- When the power menu appears, tap Power off.
- Tap Power off again to confirm.
This is the usual button method on many Galaxy models with a Side button. Button names and layouts differ on some older phones and tablets; if yours has a separate Power button or the combination does not bring up the menu, check the manual or Samsung support instructions for your exact model. Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and carrier. Samsung Canada’s Galaxy power instructions were last updated July 2, 2026.
Use Quick Settings if the button opens Bixby
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Samsung Canada’s instructions specify swiping down with two fingers.
- Tap the Power icon.
- Choose Power off, then confirm by tapping it again.
This on-screen route avoids relying on the Side button’s long-press assignment, but requires a responsive touchscreen. The icon’s location and panel layout may vary. Samsung’s instructions cover this option.
Why holding the Side button may not show the power menu
On many newer Galaxy phones, the Side button combines functions that were once separate, and its long press may be assigned to Bixby or another assistant. You can use Side plus Volume Down or Quick Settings to shut down. On supported configurations, Samsung lets you change the long-press behavior at Settings > Advanced features > Side button; choose the power-off menu if it is offered. Ask Bixby to turn off the phone
If Bixby Voice is set up and available on your device, press and hold the Side button to summon Bixby, then say, “Turn off the phone.” This hands-free method depends on Bixby Voice setup and the phone’s configuration. Samsung describes the option in its Galaxy power-off guidance.
If your Galaxy is frozen
A phone that does not respond to touch or normal button controls may need a forced reboot. Press and hold the Power or Side button and Volume Down at the same time until the device shuts down and restarts; Samsung says this can take up to 60 seconds. This is a reboot, not a normal shutdown, so use it for an unresponsive device. If the phone still will not turn off, Samsung recommends requesting service.

Samsung’s regional instructions are not universal: its Australia Side-button guide is written for Australian variants and cautions that guidance for international devices may differ. Check your local Samsung support page if your settings or buttons do not match.
