To keep the screen in one position, hold the tablet the way you want it and switch Auto rotate to Portrait or Landscape.
Turn Auto rotate on or off
- Open Quick settings. Swipe down from the top of the screen. Depending on your tablet and software, you may need to swipe down again to see the full panel.
- Find the orientation control. If it is not on the current panel page, swipe left or right through the Quick settings pages. Look for Auto rotate, Portrait, or Landscape.
- Choose the mode. Tap Portrait or Landscape to enable Auto rotate. To lock the screen, first hold the tablet in the orientation you want, then tap Auto rotate; the control changes to Portrait or Landscape.
Auto rotate follows the tablet’s position when the app supports that orientation. Portrait and Landscape are lock states. Tap the lock control again to return to Auto rotate. Samsung’s US instructions describe Auto rotate as adjusting the screen as the device is held upright or sideways. The icon may be highlighted when rotation is active; a lock icon and gray appearance may indicate a locked state in the US guide. Since appearance varies, rely on the label and state as well as color.
Find or restore a missing control
Check the other Quick settings pages first. If the control is absent, Samsung’s US guide gives these steps to restore it:
- Open Quick settings and tap Edit (the pencil icon).
- Select the Auto rotate icon from the available controls.
- Tap Done.
Exact panel placement and editing controls can differ by Galaxy model and software version.

Why the screen may not rotate
The app may be fixed to one orientation
Auto rotate cannot make every app switch orientation. Samsung notes that some apps open only in Portrait or Landscape by default. Test rotation in another app that supports both orientations; if that app rotates, the behavior is likely specific to the original app. See Samsung’s screen rotation troubleshooting guide.
Check the setting, update, and restart
Confirm the Quick settings control says Auto rotate, rather than Portrait or Landscape. Samsung also recommends checking for software updates and restarting if rotation still does not work.

Do not look for the phone Home screen switch
Samsung’s US instructions say the Home screen rotation option described for phones is not available on tablets, so it is not the setting to change for a Galaxy tablet.
Consider physical damage
If the screen is damaged, Samsung advises contacting support, since physical damage may affect device performance.

Choose the mode that fits
| Mode | What it does | Useful when |

| Auto rotate | Follows the tablet’s orientation in apps that support it. | You switch between upright and sideways viewing. |
| Portrait | Locks the screen in portrait orientation. | You want the display to stay upright while holding the tablet vertically. |
