To broadcast an internet radio station as a 24/7 YouTube video with a waveform, combine the station’s audio with a visual scene, encode both as a video stream, and send it to YouTube Live. OBS offers a graphical setup; FFmpeg can run from a command line, including on an optional always-on server. Before going live, confirm you have worldwide rights to the content and understand that YouTube may not save a continuous stream longer than 12 hours as an archive.

What you need before setting up the stream

The broadcast has three parts: an internet radio audio source, a video scene that displays a waveform, and an encoder that sends the combined feed to YouTube Live. YouTube receives video, so audio alone is not enough. A third-party guide published May 29, 2026 describes using a static image or looping video with a local HTML waveform visualizer in an OBS browser source; treat this as an example approach, not an officially supported or verified visualizer.

  • A stable radio source: The station’s audio stream URL and permission to rebroadcast it.
  • A waveform visual: A visualizer that can access or analyze the same audio sent to YouTube. The specific tool and its compatibility depend on your setup.
  • An encoder: OBS on a computer with an interactive desktop, or FFmpeg in a command-line environment.
  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: The channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Check broadcast rights and YouTube eligibility

Do not assume that a publicly accessible radio stream is cleared for rebroadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require broadcasters to have the rights needed to exploit the live content worldwide, including music licensing rights. Review the YouTube livestream terms and obtain permission that covers the relevant music and territories before you relay a station.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content that remains in the stream, it may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even when you have a license, the rights holder may need to allowlist your YouTube channel through Content ID for the stream to proceed without interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Choose OBS or FFmpeg

Decision OBS on a computer FFmpeg on a server
Setup style Graphical scene composition and interactive controls. Command-line configuration and process management.
Where it runs A computer with a desktop session, as in the described tutorial workflow. An always-on VPS is one option for unattended operation; a VPS is not required by YouTube.
Waveform setup A browser source loading a local HTML visualizer is a proposed route. No specific visualizer’s compatibility is established here. Requires a suitable video composition or filter pipeline. No production-ready waveform command is established here.
Operational trade-off You can inspect the scene visually, but the computer and session need to remain available. Can run as a background process, but you must configure and monitor it from the command line.
Comparative evidence No comparative uptime, CPU, or reliability measurements are established for these approaches.

The waveform must react to the same audio that reaches YouTube. A visualizer analyzing a different audio source could display activity that does not match what viewers hear. The tutorial’s browser-source idea is a starting point, not proof that a particular local visualizer will work with every operating system or OBS setup.

Build the broadcast with OBS

  1. Prepare the visualizer. Choose a background image or looping video and a waveform visualizer. If using the browser-source approach, configure a local HTML visualizer to analyze the radio audio. Confirm the visualizer works in a browser before adding it to OBS.
  2. Create a scene in OBS. Add the background as an Image or Media Source. Add a Browser source for the waveform visualizer and size or position it over the background.
  3. Add the radio audio. Configure an OBS audio input or other supported capture method to receive the station’s stream. The exact input method depends on how the audio URL and visualizer are implemented; verify that the OBS audio meter responds and that the waveform follows the same audio.
  4. Set the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use the encoder workflow. In OBS, configure the streaming service and provide the stream key from YouTube. Treat the key as a secret: it is the credential that lets the encoder send a feed to your YouTube channel.
  5. Set output quality using current YouTube guidance. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution recommendations to choose a resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery. Avoid copying a bitrate from an unrelated tutorial as if it were optimal for every connection.
  6. Start and verify the feed. Start streaming in OBS, then check the YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video and audio. Confirm that the waveform moves with the program audio, and monitor the feed before leaving it unattended.

The OBS Project also documents streaming to YouTube in its OBS YouTube streaming guide; use YouTube’s current encoder settings page for platform-specific output values.

Use FFmpeg for a command-line workflow

FFmpeg can combine an audio stream with a still image or looping video and publish the encoded result to YouTube. For a waveform, the video pipeline must also render a visualizer driven by the audio being broadcast. A VPS is an optional way to keep a process running without a desktop computer, not a YouTube requirement.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  1. Confirm the inputs. Obtain the permitted radio audio stream URL and prepare the background or looping visual. Decide how the waveform will be generated and ensure that implementation can analyze the same audio feed.
  2. Design and test the composition. Build an FFmpeg filter or another compatible rendering pipeline for the background, waveform, and audio. Test locally first; the available guidance does not establish a verified waveform filter chain or universal command.
  3. Configure YouTube output. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio, obtain its stream key, and configure FFmpeg to publish to YouTube using current encoder settings. Follow YouTube’s guidance for RTMPS, resolution, frame rate, and connection-appropriate bitrate.
  4. Run and supervise it. Start the process and verify the incoming picture and sound in YouTube’s Live Control Room. If using a server, configure your own process supervision and alerting so you can detect a stopped process or lost input.

Commands depend on the FFmpeg build, audio source, visualizer implementation, and output settings. The third-party tutorial describes the overall architecture, but its example command should be checked against current FFmpeg and YouTube guidance before use. No reliability advantage over OBS has been established by comparative testing.

Keep the stream live and plan for interruptions

A 24/7 broadcast needs more than a successful initial connection. Check that the radio source remains reachable, the waveform continues responding, and the encoder is still delivering a healthy feed. YouTube can interrupt a stream because of copyright detection even if the encoder is working normally; an encoder restart will not resolve a rights or allowlisting issue.

  • No incoming feed: Check that the encoder is running, the stream key is correct, and YouTube Studio is showing the expected live event.
  • Video but no audio: Check the radio source connection and the encoder’s audio input or routing. Confirm that the same audio is reaching both the output and the visualizer.
  • Waveform is static or out of sync: Check whether the visualizer can access the audio being sent to the encoder. A separate or silent audio source will not track the broadcast.
  • YouTube interrupts the stream: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and resolve rights or Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder. Do not assume a licensed stream is automatically allowlisted.
  • Connection is unstable: Choose encoder settings that the available connection can sustain, following YouTube’s current recommendations rather than relying on a bitrate copied from another setup.

Understand what happens to a 24/7 archive

A live broadcast and its replay archive are separate considerations. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete replay, do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 YouTube archive. Plan local recording and divide the broadcast into shorter archive segments where practical. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than relay a live internet radio audio feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not take a live camera or internet radio input. Its stream continues without a computer or home connection staying on, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
