To turn an AI video prompt into a short film, build a small production pipeline: write a beginning-middle-end story, plan it as separate shots, track continuity, generate and review clips, then edit the strongest takes into a sequence. A prompt can shape an individual shot, but it cannot guarantee that independently generated clips will match.

Start with a story, not a stack of prompts

Write one sentence describing who wants what and what stands in the way. Then sketch a compact treatment that gives the film a beginning, middle and end. This keeps each generated shot in service of a story rather than merely adding attractive footage.

  • Beginning: establish the protagonist, setting and goal.
  • Middle: introduce a complication that changes the plan or forces a decision.
  • End: show the consequence, resolving or deliberately reframing the goal.

For each beat, identify something visible the audience can understand: a character discovers a locked door, hides a key, or chooses to leave it behind. This is practical story-craft guidance, not a requirement imposed by a video model. Runway’s longer-video workflow likewise recommends outlining the three parts, characters, locations and emotional journey before generating.

Turn the treatment into a shot list

Give each storyboard frame a specific job. A shot list makes the story’s visual progression explicit and gives you a checklist when you assess generated takes.

Field What to record
Shot and story beat Its place in the sequence and the change it should communicate.
Subject and action Who is visible and the one main action the audience needs to see.
Location and continuity Setting, time, wardrobe, props, screen position and relevant story state.
Framing and camera Wide, medium or close framing; angle; and any camera movement.
Light and look Lighting, palette and visual style.
Duration and assets Target length and any reference image or other asset needed.

Split complicated events into shots that are easier to generate and cut together. Runway’s workflow uses 5–10 seconds as a typical potential generation length for a storyboard frame; treat that as an example from its workflow, not a universal rule. Google’s Veo prompt guide and OpenAI’s Sora 2 prompting guide also organize prompting around elements such as framing, action, lighting and visual style.

Make a continuity sheet and gather references

Track stable details separately from what changes in each shot. A short written continuity sheet can cover character appearance, clothing, carried objects, injuries, location layout, weather, time of day and which side of the frame a character enters or exits. Update it when the story changes a detail—for example, after a character drops a bag.

Use reference images or character plates when the platform supports them. For a returning location, an environment reference can help anchor its appearance. Runway recommends character plates with multiple angles because relying on a single forward-facing image can still leave subtle identity changes. References are aids, not a guarantee of an identical character in every take.

Specific controls depend on the product and version. Google’s Veo 3.1 API documentation describes using up to three reference images, video extension and first- or last-frame control. OpenAI’s Sora 2 guide describes reusable character references and extending a video with its initial clip as context. Check the current documentation for the version you use: Google Veo 3.1 API guide and OpenAI Sora 2 guide.

Prompt one shot at a time

A reusable prompt structure helps you specify the image without asking one generation to carry the entire film. Put the main action and essential visual anchors first; add details only when they help clarify the shot.

  1. Shot and framing: state the shot size, angle and camera movement.
  2. Subject and continuity anchors: describe the recognizable character details, clothing and props needed here.
  3. Action: state one main action, breaking it into beats only when useful.
  4. Setting: give the location, time and relevant background.
  5. Light and look: specify lighting, palette and medium or style.
  6. Sound or dialogue: include it only if the tool supports it and it matters to the shot.
  7. End state: describe where the subject or camera should finish if the next cut depends on it.

Start simply, then adjust. Runway’s Gen-4 prompting guide recommends adding elements such as subject motion, camera motion, scene motion and style incrementally. The Veo prompt guide emphasizes specificity about appearance, location, action and camera choices. OpenAI advises treating a prompt as a creative wish list rather than a contract: repeated generations can differ.

Generate, inspect and revise with the next cut in mind

Judge a clip both on its own and beside the shots around it. A beautiful isolated take may not provide a usable bridge into the next moment. Keep more than one take when results vary, and revise one or two prompt elements at a time so you can tell what changed.

  • Did the required action happen clearly?
  • Is the character still recognizable, and do wardrobe and props agree with adjacent shots?
  • Does the location, light and screen direction make sense across the cut?
  • Does the clip end in a pose or composition that can connect to the next shot?
  • Does the sequence show a change or decision that advances the story?

Where supported, use references, frame controls or extension features to help anchor a sequence. Their availability and behavior are model- and version-specific. Runway’s Gen-4 guide describes 5- or 10-second generations from an input image and text prompt; this is a product specification, not a general duration standard. Confirm current capabilities in the Runway Gen-4 guide. OpenAI says shorter Sora clips generally follow instructions more reliably, and its Sora overview notes difficulties with complex physics, cause and effect, spatial details and precise temporal events.

Assemble the story in an editor

Select takes for clarity and continuity, then arrange them in editing software. The cut can do work that a generation may not: establish cause and effect, clarify a change of location or time, and control how long the audience sits with a moment. Sound, dialogue and deliberate pacing can strengthen the emotional arc. If an AI-generated transition is unclear, a direct cut may communicate the idea more reliably than a prompt that tries to make one clip do too much. Runway’s workflow for longer films explicitly recommends combining generated clips in editing software.

Use a model’s controls as aids, not guarantees

There is no universal best model established by the cited product documentation. Compare the controls available to you, your shot length and complexity, the reference workflow, editing needs, access and current terms. These are documented examples, not a ranking:

Documented workflow Controls or guidance Practical caveat
Runway longer-film workflow and Gen-4 guide Storyboard planning, character plates, image-plus-text generation and editing assembly; the Gen-4 guide describes 5- or 10-second clips. Character plates can help reduce variation, but do not establish perfect identity continuity. Capabilities depend on product version.
Google Veo 3.1 API Up to three reference images, video extension and first- or last-frame control. The prompt guide focuses on constructing shots; multi-shot narrative assembly still requires planning and review. Verify current access and API behavior.
OpenAI Sora 2 prompting guide Character references, video extension using initial clip context and shot-level prompt guidance. Generation is probabilistic; the guide says shorter clips generally follow instructions more reliably. Documented controls can change.
