Safari can turn a webpage into a PDF without another app. Open the page, tap Share, choose More, tap Markup, make any annotations, tap Done, choose Save File To, name the document, and tap Save. The PDF is stored in the Files location you select.
The built-in iPad method
This workflow uses Safari, the Share sheet, Markup and Files. It is the most direct way to keep a webpage as a document on an iPad.
- Open Safari and load the webpage. Wait until the content you need is visible. If the page is still loading images or text, allow it to finish before exporting.
- Tap the Share button. In Safari, it is the button that opens the page-sharing sheet.
- Tap More. The action list can contain more commands than are visible initially. More opens the complete list of available actions.
- Tap Markup. Safari prepares the webpage as a document that can be marked up.
- Annotate if needed. Use the highlight, pen and writing tools to mark important passages, circle details or add notes. You can leave the page unchanged if you only want a clean PDF.
- Tap Done. Markup asks what to do with the finished document.
- Tap Save File To. Select a folder in Files, enter a filename and tap Save.
Apple describes this result as a PDF that you can mark up, highlight, draw on, write on and share with other people. Menu labels can vary slightly between iPadOS releases, but the sequence remains the same: Share > More > Markup > Done > Save File To.
Where the PDF is saved
Save File To determines the location; Safari does not choose a mysterious separate PDF folder. You select the destination in the Files picker and provide the name.

To find a saved document, open Files, tap Browse, select iCloud Drive or On My iPad, and open the folder chosen during saving. If you used Safari’s download controls instead of Markup, inspect the Downloads folder. You can use the Files search field if you remember part of the filename.
Annotating before export
Markup is part of the export path, not a separate editor you must launch first. After you tap Markup, the page is ready for edits. Highlight text you want readers to notice, draw arrows or boxes around figures, and write short explanations in the margins. When you tap Done and save, those edits are included in the PDF you selected.
For handwriting or detailed drawing, an Apple Pencil is optional; the Markup tools can also be used with touch. Use a short, descriptive filename such as project-brief-2026-09-29.pdf so the document is recognizable in Files and in later share dialogs.
Share a webpage as a PDF without keeping a local copy first
Safari also supports sending a webpage directly from its Share sheet. Depending on the destination and the site, Safari can offer the page as a link, as a PDF or in Reader view. Choose the PDF option when the recipient needs the document immediately and you do not need to organize a copy in Files first.

Use Reader view for a cleaner document
When Safari offers Reader view, it removes much of the surrounding page furniture and presents the article in a reading-oriented layout. From the Share sheet, choose Reader view when it is available, then share or export that view as a PDF. Reader view is not offered on every webpage, so the option may be absent or may produce no change for sites that do not support it.
Reader view is a presentation choice, not a guarantee that every interactive element, advertisement, comment thread or embedded application will appear. For a legal, financial or technical record, compare the Reader-view PDF with the original page and use the normal export when the surrounding context matters.
Checks to make before you save
- Confirm the correct page. If Safari has several tabs open, verify the title and address before tapping Share.
- Wait for content to settle. Scroll through important sections once so deferred images or text have had an opportunity to load.
- Choose the destination deliberately. iCloud Drive is convenient across devices; On My iPad keeps the file local. Both depend on the storage and settings available on your iPad.
- Use a stable filename. Include a date, version or subject when you expect multiple captures of the same page.
- Open the saved PDF once. Check that the pages, annotations and links you care about are present before closing Safari.
Troubleshooting
Markup is not visible in the Share sheet
Tap More in the action list to reveal additional commands. If you are not in Safari, return to the webpage in Safari and open its Share sheet. iPadOS releases can place actions in slightly different positions, so look for Markup in the expanded list rather than assuming it has been removed.

Scroll through the actions presented after Markup finishes. Save File To is the command that opens the Files picker; it may be below other sharing destinations. If you only need to send the result, use one of the available share destinations and save a local copy later from the received PDF.
You cannot find the document afterward
Open Files, tap Browse and inspect the service and folder selected during saving. Check both iCloud Drive and On My iPad if you are unsure which one was chosen. Also inspect Downloads when the page was saved through Safari’s download controls. Searching the filename in Files is faster than opening folders one by one.

The PDF is missing an image or section
Return to Safari, reload the page and wait for its content to finish loading before repeating the export. Some pages insert content only after a delay or after you scroll. If the site offers Reader view, try that layout for a text-focused copy; otherwise save the normal page after verifying the missing section is visible.
The page looks cluttered
Use Reader view when Safari offers it, or hide obvious overlays before exporting if the site provides its own controls. Reader view may produce a cleaner reading layout, but it is available only on supported webpages.

Saving fails or the file is not available offline
Try a different destination in Files. An iCloud Drive save depends on iCloud settings and available cloud space; an On My iPad save depends on local storage. If one location is unavailable, save to the other and move the document later from Files.
You need to send the PDF immediately
Use Safari’s Share sheet and choose the PDF sharing option when it is offered. This avoids an extra save-and-attach step. For a copy you can find again, use Save File To first.
