To turn a screenshot into an editable UI design, import the image into Figma, run the Figma agent on the selected image, describe the screen or components you want extracted, then inspect and correct the generated layers. The result can include editable text, shapes, and frames, but it is a starting point—not a verified copy of the original interface.
Your best workflow depends on what you have: a static image requires visual reconstruction, while access to the live or coded interface enables a separate capture-to-canvas workflow that can preserve more structure.
Choose the right workflow first
A screenshot is a visual reference, not the original layout model. Pixels do not contain the source component tree, design tokens, responsive rules, or semantic meaning. Decide which of these situations describes your input before you begin.
| Input | Best starting point | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Only a PNG, JPEG, or screenshot pasted from a mockup | Figma screenshot-to-design conversion | An inferred set of editable layers that needs review |
| A live website or app screen you can open in a browser | Figma’s capture-to-canvas workflow | Editable design frames captured from the rendered interface |
| Source code and a running preview | Chrome extension, Figma Make preview copy, or the remote Figma MCP code-to-canvas tool | Repeatable captures of a full screen or selected element, with limitations on some complex pages |
| A production implementation rather than a design file | Rebuild the interface in your codebase after design inspection | Neither Figma workflow automatically produces production-ready source code |
Convert a static screenshot into editable Figma layers
1. Prepare the clearest reference you have
- Use the highest-resolution screenshot available and crop away unrelated browser chrome.
- Make sure text, controls, and boundaries are visible. Blurred copy or overlapping elements force the agent to guess.
- If the screen contains several regions, decide whether you need the entire screen or one component first.
Figma says clarity and complexity affect the result. Familiar UI patterns and clean layouts are easier to interpret than unusual artwork, ambiguous controls, or heavily layered visuals.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Place the image on a Figma Design canvas
- Open a Figma Design file.
- Add the screenshot to the canvas, or select an image that is already there.
- Position and scale it so the complete region you want analyzed is visible.
3. Open the Figma agent
Open the agent from Figma’s left side rail. Figma also lists Command+Enter on macOS and Control+Enter on Windows as the shortcut.
4. Specify exactly what to extract
Your instruction controls scope. State the screen, region, and level of structure you want instead of asking for a vague “copy.” For example:
- “Recreate the entire dashboard as editable frames, text layers, and shapes.”
- “Extract only the top navigation and preserve its spacing and hierarchy.”
- “Turn the pricing card into editable layers; identify heading, price, feature list, and button.”
- “Reconstruct the layout structure only; do not invent replacement copy.”
If your file has a design library, tell the agent which library should guide the result. A narrower request is useful when the full screenshot contains decorative or ambiguous areas.
5. Inspect the generated canvas
Review every important layer after generation. Check the wording, font treatment, alignment, spacing, grouping, colors, and responsive intent. Compare the result with the reference at the same zoom level. If something is wrong, issue a focused follow-up prompt or edit the layers manually.
6. Make the design yours
Replace the reference’s branding, copy, imagery, and components where appropriate. Rename layers, create sensible frames and auto-layout structures, and connect the result to your own variables or library. Keep the original screenshot as a locked reference layer so later edits can be compared against it.
What the converter can and cannot infer
Usually recoverable
- Visible text as editable text layers, subject to transcription errors.
- Basic rectangles, borders, fills, icons represented as shapes, and frames.
- Approximate hierarchy, grouping, and relative spacing.
- Recognizable patterns such as navigation bars, cards, forms, and buttons.
Commonly uncertain
- Exact font family, weight, line-height, and letter spacing when the screenshot does not identify them.
- Whether a visual is an image, SVG, CSS effect, or a component instance.
- Hover, focus, animation, responsive behavior, and interactions that are not visible.
- Hidden content, scroll states, or the meaning of an ambiguous icon.
Figma warns that AI output can be misleading or wrong. Treat the generated file as an editable interpretation. Validate copy, hierarchy, spacing, and intent before using it for a handoff or implementation.

If the interface is live or code-backed
Do not use the screenshot converter when you can access the rendered interface directly. Figma documents a different capture-to-canvas route for a live or coded screen.
Capture with the browser extension
Open the page in Chrome, use Figma’s Chrome extension, and capture either the full screen or a selected element. This is useful for documenting an existing product, collecting real-site patterns for a moodboard, or starting a redesign from the current implementation.
Capture a Figma Make preview
When the interface is running in a Figma Make preview, copy its layers into a design file. This avoids treating a rendered preview as a flat image when editable source layers are available.
Use the remote Figma MCP code-to-canvas tool
For a code-backed preview, the remote Figma MCP server can capture a full screen or a selected element. Repeated captures support a multi-screen flow. This is still a design-capture workflow, not an automatic conversion of arbitrary code into production source.
Know the capture limitations
- Captured layers can use compatible variables from a library already added to the file.
- Captures are not automatically mapped to your library’s components and styles.
- Complex scroll-driven pages, canvas-rendered content, and virtualized lists may not capture cleanly.
- If a whole-page capture is imperfect, capture a specific element or screen region instead.
Access, seats, and beta conditions
Figma’s screenshot-converter page describes the agent as available on paid Figma plans and says that, during the open beta described there, it does not consume AI credits. Figma’s AI Help Center describes a beta rollout that began May 20, 2026, with access rolling out to eligible users.
Editing also depends on account context: the Help Center says making edits requires a Full seat and edit access to the file, and a team administrator can disable AI. Check your current plan, seat type, file permissions, administrator settings, and the beta terms shown in your account because availability can change.

Quality-control checklist before handoff
- Content: Compare every label, number, and punctuation mark with the reference.
- Geometry: Check frame bounds, padding, alignment, gaps, and corner radii.
- Typography: Verify font, weight, size, line-height, and wrapping rather than trusting visual similarity.
- Structure: Convert accidental groups into meaningful frames, auto-layouts, and reusable components.
- States: Add missing hover, focus, error, loading, and responsive variants deliberately.
- Accessibility: Set readable contrast, logical reading order, and labels for controls.
- System fit: Replace approximations with your approved variables, styles, and components.
- Legal and brand review: Remove third-party logos, copy, and imagery unless you have permission to reuse them.
Or skip the browser setup
If your starting point is a website you need to capture cleanly before rebuilding it, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the full option set. This example captures Stripe as a WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
For a design reference, you can request full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selected element, a device preset or custom viewport, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, click actions, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, hidden selectors, blocked ads or trackers, custom headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent background, image resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and PDF page, margin, paper-size, and landscape options.

Troubleshooting
The generated layers do not resemble the screenshot
Use a sharper image, crop to one region, and ask for a named component or structure-only extraction. Complex or ambiguous visuals require more manual correction.
Text is wrong or missing
Zoom the reference, provide a higher-resolution image, and correct the text manually. Do not publish inferred copy without checking it against the source.
The live capture is incomplete
Capture a selected element instead of the whole page. Scroll-driven, canvas-rendered, and virtualized content may not be represented reliably in one capture.
The agent or editing controls are unavailable
Confirm that your plan, Full-seat status, file edit permission, and team AI setting meet the current beta requirements. An administrator may have disabled AI.

FAQ
Can I turn a screenshot directly into HTML or React?
Not with the documented Figma workflows. They create or capture editable design layers. Build and validate production code separately.
Should I convert the whole screenshot at once?
Only when the layout is clear. For dense screens, start with a named region such as navigation, a card, or a form and assemble the reviewed pieces.
Will my design system components be recognized automatically?
No. Captures can use compatible variables from a library already added to the file, but they are not automatically mapped to library components and styles.
Is a screenshot enough to reproduce responsive behavior?
No. A single image shows one viewport and state. You must define breakpoints, interactions, and alternate states from product requirements or additional references.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn a screenshot directly into HTML or React?
The documented Figma workflows create or capture editable design layers, not production source code. Implement and test the code separately.
How do I handle a screenshot with unreadable text?
Use the highest-resolution source available, ask for structure-only extraction, and transcribe or replace the copy manually after checking the original.
What should I capture when a full live page fails?
Capture a specific element or screen region; complex scroll-driven, canvas-rendered, and virtualized content may not capture cleanly as a whole page.
