You can turn a rights-cleared podcast archive into a continuous YouTube Live station by feeding episodes, in sequence, through an encoder connected to YouTube Live. Prepare a video presentation for the audio, choose whether to run the encoder locally or in the cloud, and plan controlled restarts if you want YouTube to automatically archive each stream segment. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so set up and test before announcing a launch.

What you need before you start

  • A catalog of episodes you are permitted to rebroadcast, including every incorporated contribution and asset.
  • A visual presentation to accompany the audio, such as episode artwork with current-program information, a waveform, captions, or a designed station scene. This is practical guidance for YouTube’s video-encoder workflow, not a claim that YouTube requires a particular visual.
  • An encoder connection to YouTube Live. YouTube’s setup instructions have you create a stream and give the encoder its server URL and stream key.
  • A plan for episode order, monitoring, stream restarts, and retaining your source files.

YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming. For a podcast archive, the audio is the program, while the encoder sends it as part of a video stream.

Choose how to keep the station running

Approach What it means Best fit
Local software encoder Run encoding software on a computer connected to YouTube Live. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software. The computer and network connection need to remain available for this local setup to continue streaming. Creators who want to manage the stream on their own computer and can keep that computer and connection running.
Cloud 24/7 streaming service A service runs a continuous prerecorded-video stream from the cloud. YouTube’s verified encoder directory includes cloud tools for continuous streaming, including services described for prerecorded videos. Creators who do not want a dedicated home computer to be the thing keeping the stream online. Check a provider’s current scheduling, recovery, privacy and security practices, pricing, stream-duration behavior, and rights workflow before choosing.
Hardware encoder YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Current price and retail availability are not established here. Operators who prefer a dedicated hardware route and have confirmed that the device suits their workflow.

YouTube’s directory establishes these categories, not a comparative ranking of their reliability, prices, or support. Compare the options on playlist and schedule control, recovery and restart behavior, monitoring, archive handling, stream-key security, cost, support, and how easily you can rotate episodes.

Prepare the podcast catalog and clear the rights

  1. Choose the episodes and sequence. Decide whether the station will play a fixed loop, a curated sequence, or rotating program blocks. Include enough on-screen program information that a viewer joining midstream can tell what is playing.
  2. Check every included element. Confirm that you have permission to rebroadcast the host and guest recordings, theme music, licensed music beds, clips, artwork, and any other third-party material. Having an episode in your podcast feed does not, by itself, establish that every embedded element is cleared for a continuous YouTube broadcast.
  3. Record the terms. Keep permission and license records, including territory and term limits. If licensed material triggers YouTube Content ID, YouTube says the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel to avoid interruption.
  4. Keep a clean source copy. Retain original episode files and a separate backup instead of relying on a YouTube replay as your only archive.

YouTube’s live-stream terms require the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party material; a match can interrupt or terminate a stream.

Create a YouTube Live stream and connect the encoder

  1. Allow for activation. If this is your first time live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave activation until the day you plan to announce the station.
  2. Open YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go Live, then create a stream in the Stream tab.
  3. Copy the connection details. In the YouTube stream setup, find the server URL and stream key. Enter the server URL in the encoder’s server or URL field, and the key in its stream-key field.
  4. Protect the key. Treat the stream key as a secret that controls the encoder connection. Do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
  5. Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream before you make it public or direct listeners to it.

Build a program people can join at any point

Give the audio a useful visual layer

Use episode artwork, a waveform, captions, or a designed station scene that identifies the current program. Where practical, show an episode title or other current-program information so someone arriving midway through a long stream has context. A visual layer is an implementation choice for this video-stream workflow; it is not a guarantee that a static image will meet YouTube’s monetization standards.

Arrange the archive deliberately

Put episodes into coherent blocks and consider how the order sounds when it loops. Review transitions, levels, and the result of joining partway through an episode. An unchanging, context-free loop can be a poor listener experience and does not remove the need to assess monetization policy separately.

Check the live output

  • Listen to the stream and confirm the program audio is audible and balanced.
  • Check that the visual is present and that any on-screen episode information matches the audio.
  • Confirm that the intended audience can access the stream and that its visibility is set as planned.
  • Watch Live Control Room for stream health, errors, and interruptions.
  • Verify that the episode sequence behaves as intended, including at the point where it loops or changes blocks.

Plan stream length and YouTube archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you want replayable segments, plan a controlled end and restart with a practical buffer below 12 hours, then confirm that each archive appears. Do not rely on automatic archiving for streams longer than 12 hours: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive assurance covers streams under that duration.

Keep the original episodes and a separate backup regardless of whether YouTube creates a replay. That gives you a source copy if a segment does not archive as expected or you need to rebuild the program.

Understand monetization and reused-content risk

YouTube permits monetization of live streams for channels in the YouTube Partner Program, subject to channel and content policies. Its July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced content is covered by its “inauthentic content” policy. Reused-content review is separate from copyright review and applies at the channel level. Owning the podcast recordings or clearing their rights does not guarantee that a continuously looping archive will qualify for monetization; treat eligibility as a review risk, not a promised outcome or an automatic ban.
