If YouTube Live is showing unstable ingest or your encoder reports network-dropped frames, first check the stream and encoder, then compare repeated connection measurements, Wi-Fi against Ethernet, and your ISP connection against another network. These symptoms can point to a connection problem, but neither a speed test nor YouTube’s stream-health message alone proves packet loss or identifies your ISP as the cause.
What a YouTube stream-health warning can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes the videoIngestionStarved health status as: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” That means YouTube is receiving insufficient video; it does not, by itself, establish packet loss or reveal which part of the path caused the shortage. YouTube Live Streaming API health documentation
Stream health can also flag configuration problems. YouTube’s diagnostics cover areas such as bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, and consistency between primary and backup streams. Check these alongside the connection: an insufficient-video warning warrants investigating both outgoing network delivery and stream settings. A platform status reports what YouTube observes at ingest, not every segment between your computer and YouTube.

Start with the encoder and stream settings
- Note the conditions. Record the streaming application, any selected ingest server or region setting it exposes, configured bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and the exact time the problem occurs.
- Separate network drops from other encoder problems. Check the software’s network-dropped-frame counter separately from rendering lag and encoding lag counters. Those counters describe different potential trouble areas; do not treat them as interchangeable.
- Check YouTube’s live stream health. Record the exact warning or diagnostic shown, including whether it refers to incoming video or configuration. Keep a screenshot if the issue persists.
- Review the relevant stream configuration. Compare bitrate, frame rate, codec, and keyframe frequency with the requirements for your encoder and YouTube setup. If you use primary and backup streams, check that their configuration is consistent. The available health information does not establish one universal setting for every stream.
Do not conclude that a specific label identifies the responsible network hop. Match its timing against the encoder counters and the tests below.

Build a repeatable connection baseline with TRAI MySpeed
TRAI MySpeed lists download and upload speed, latency, packet loss, and jitter. Its result describes network conditions at the time and place of that test, not a permanent rating of your connection. Run it during the problem and again at a quieter time, then compare the records. TRAI MySpeed
For each test, note:
- Date and time, plus your city or area at a coarse level.
- ISP and access type, such as fixed broadband or mobile data.
- Whether the streaming computer used Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Whether another device or activity was using significant bandwidth.
- Upload and download rate, latency, packet loss, and jitter as reported by the tool.
A speed test measures its own test path at a particular moment. A good headline upload speed does not guarantee a stable route to YouTube’s live ingest, and a single test cannot establish what happened during a stream. Compare repeated measurements with the encoder’s network-dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s health messages. The available sources establish no universal packet-loss percentage that is acceptable for every YouTube Live stream.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Isolate Wi-Fi and local network congestion
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, make a controlled comparison before blaming the ISP:
- Test with the computer near the router and reduce obvious sources of Wi-Fi interference where practical.
- Pause or reduce competing household activity, such as large uploads, downloads, or other bandwidth-heavy device use, for a comparison test.
- If practical, connect the streaming computer to the router over Ethernet and repeat the same stream and connection measurements. A Cat6 cable can be a convenient way to make this temporary wired test; it is not specifically required, and purchasing one will not fix a problem beyond your local network.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends trying a different internet connection and, in relevant troubleshooting contexts, minimizing Wi-Fi interference and competing device use. YouTube connection troubleshooting

- Premium Build: Features a sleek aluminum exterior and braided-nylon cable to complement the design of high-end devices.
- What You Get: PowerExpand USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, welcome guide, 18-month worry-free warranty, and friendly customer service.
If Ethernet behaves steadily while Wi-Fi does not, investigate the wireless segment, router placement, interference, and local network load. If both connections show the same issue, Wi-Fi is less likely to explain the difference, but that comparison alone does not prove an ISP fault.
Compare the ISP connection with another access network
If available, briefly test a phone hotspot or another independent connection while keeping the computer, encoder settings, and content as consistent as practical. Record the time and repeat the same diagnostics. Mobile data charges or capacity limits may apply.

If the stream behaves differently on the alternate network, that is useful evidence that the access path may matter; it does not identify the precise cause. Differences between services—for example, a speed test appearing normal while YouTube Live struggles—also do not prove throttling, peering failure, or deliberate blocking. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, your usual ISP with the alternate network, problem periods with quieter periods, and encoder counters with YouTube health messages before drawing conclusions.

- Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets: In addition to the standard bracket, a low-profile bracket is provided for mini tower computer cases
- Dates and timestamps for the problem periods.
- Repeated TRAI MySpeed results for upload, latency, packet loss, and jitter, including results from a quieter period.
- Whether switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet changed the behavior.
- Whether an alternate connection changed the behavior.
- The encoder’s network-dropped-frame readings and any relevant YouTube stream-health messages or screenshots.
- Your configured bitrate, resolution, frame rate, encoder application, and selected ingest setting if available.
Ask the ISP to check the access connection and route during the listed periods. If the evidence points to a YouTube-specific problem, report it through YouTube’s feedback or support mechanisms with the same timestamps and diagnostics. Avoid asserting throttling, a peering fault, or deliberate blocking unless there is evidence to support that claim.
TRAI publishes quality-of-service regulations and broadband performance reports, including wireline broadband reporting. Those materials provide regulatory and aggregate context; they do not establish an individual subscriber’s YouTube-specific entitlement or diagnose a particular stream’s route. The TRAI material surfaced for this guide includes a report for the quarter ending March 2026; aggregate results should not be treated as proof of what happened on one connection.
