To find why a YouTube live stream disconnects from a spare PC, first compare the encoder’s output with YouTube’s stream-health status. If the encoder preview or local recording is faulty, investigate the PC, sources, and encoder. If those look clean, focus on upload stability and the YouTube ingest URL, stream key, and settings. The spare PC is not necessarily the problem; the cause depends on what the diagnostics show.
Start by identifying where the stream fails
Before changing settings, record what happens during a disconnect. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using the encoder, live dashboard, local archive, CPU load, and outbound connection as diagnostic evidence. Avoid changing several settings at once so you can tell whether a test changes the symptom.
- Note the time and duration of the drop, the encoder’s exact error, and any stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check whether the encoder says it is still sending and whether viewers report an outage at the same time.
- If you have local recording enabled, preserve the file for comparison with the YouTube stream.
YouTube Help’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends first checking the encoder output and then investigating the outbound internet connection if the encoder looks healthy.
Check the encoder and spare PC
If the encoder preview or recording is faulty
If video or audio is already breaking up in the encoder preview, or the local recording contains the same fault, investigate the signal before it reaches YouTube. Check the incoming audio and video sources, capture devices, audio/video routing, encoder errors, and CPU load. Update the encoder software to its current version and see whether CPU-load spikes line up with the disconnects.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
A damaged local recording points toward the PC, capture hardware, source routing, or encoder configuration as areas to investigate. It does not by itself identify which one is responsible. YouTube does not provide a universal CPU threshold for a spare PC, so use the encoder’s status and the timing of observed load rather than an invented target.
If the encoder output is clean
If the encoder preview and local recording look healthy but YouTube reports a problem, shift attention to the outbound connection and ingest settings. YouTube identifies outbound connectivity as a possible source of trouble; a good-looking local feed does not prove that the upload reaches YouTube reliably.

Test upload capacity and network stability
Test upload speed with the spare PC connected the same way it will be during the broadcast. Download speed is not a substitute: the stream depends on capacity leaving your network. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and accounting for both the primary and backup stream bitrates if you run a backup encoder. Other people or devices using the same connection can reduce what is available to the streaming PC. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and its streaming tips.
A speed test is only a snapshot; it may not expose brief packet loss or intermittent router or ISP faults. Repeat tests and compare their timing with encoder errors and YouTube health messages. If upload results vary or interruptions coincide with drops, try testing at a less congested time and pausing other large uploads. As an optional diagnostic comparison, test a wired connection if both the PC and router support one. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider when connection tests point to a connection problem.

Match encoder settings to the connection
Choose a stream format and bitrate the connection can sustain reliably, not merely the highest setting the PC can select. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. Its current encoder guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
The following bitrate values are YouTube Help’s current guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. They are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain the selected rate.

If the PC cannot encode smoothly at the selected resolution, frame rate, or codec, reduce the workload and repeat a representative test. Check whether encoder errors or CPU-load spikes align with the fault; the published guidance does not establish a specific hardware threshold or mean that a hardware upgrade is required.

The encoder must use the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes the key as the credential and destination information the encoder uses to send the feed. If the encoder reports a key-related start error, retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube Help on managing live stream settings.

For a connection timeout while using RTMPS, confirm that the encoder is using the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room and that the encoder supports RTMPS. Do not assume the ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. YouTube says port 443 can be specified for certain SSL errors when the URL and encoder settings permit it; apply that only when diagnosing a matching error, not as a general fix for every disconnect. See YouTube Help on encrypting a stream using RTMPS.
Run a controlled test before the broadcast
- Set up the encoder and test at least two hours before the event, as YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips recommend.
- Use a private or unlisted test with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast.
- Check the preview before starting; then monitor YouTube stream health, encoder output, and CPU load.
- If you use local recording, confirm that the archive continues recording and compare it with any stream faults.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event so you have time to notice and address problems.
If you have configured backup-encoder failover, YouTube describes testing it by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable. Do this during a test, not during the real event. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computers and its encoder guidance.
Common disconnect symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview or local recording also glitches | Incoming sources, capture devices, audio/video routing, encoder errors, software version, and CPU load. |
| The encoder looks clean, but YouTube reports stream trouble | Outbound upload capacity and stability, shared network use, and the stream URL and key. |
| Upload results vary or drops coincide with network interruptions | Repeat upload tests under the same connection conditions; compare timestamps, reduce competing uploads, and test a wired path if available. Contact the ISP if tests indicate a connection fault. |
| The encoder reports a key or start error | Retrieve the current stream key and URL in Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| An RTMPS connection times out | Verify the RTMPS URL and encoder support; consider port 443 only for a matching SSL error when supported by the settings. |
| Disconnects occur only at the selected high-quality settings | Check sustained upload capacity with headroom and whether the PC encodes the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate smoothly. Test a lower workload. |
Or let it run in the cloud
