If your TV has a picture but no sound, check mute and volume on the TV, the source device, and any soundbar or receiver first. Then confirm the TV is sending audio to the right place and that the sound system is set to the matching input. These checks can identify a simple setting or connection problem; a hardware fault may take longer to diagnose.
Why is there no sound on your TV?
Audio may be muted or turned down on more than one device. The TV may also be sending sound to its built-in speakers when you expect a soundbar, or the soundbar may be listening to the wrong input. A loose cable, incompatible audio format, or device fault can cause the same symptom.
Menu labels vary by manufacturer, model, region, and software version. Look for the TV’s sound, speaker, or audio-output settings rather than assuming every model uses the same path.

Start with the quick checks
- Check the TV: Raise its volume and make sure mute is off.
- Check the source: If you use a set-top box, game console, or other source device, check its volume and mute controls too.
- Check the sound system: If you use a soundbar or receiver, confirm it is powered on, its volume is up, and it is set to the input connected to the TV.
- Test the TV’s built-in speakers: If they work, the issue is more likely in the external audio connection or sound system than in basic TV audio playback.
Check the TV’s audio output and soundbar input
A cable being connected does not guarantee that the TV is routing audio through it. In the TV’s sound or speaker settings, select the external audio system if that is where you want sound to play. On the soundbar or receiver, choose the input that matches the cable.

Input names differ. Sony’s examples include TV for ARC or optical and Analog for an analog connection; Samsung uses D. In as an example for ARC or optical. Consult the instructions for your specific model if the labels are unclear. Sony’s soundbar troubleshooting guide and Samsung’s soundbar troubleshooting guide show examples.
Fix an HDMI ARC or eARC connection
ARC and eARC work only when both the TV and audio system support the feature. Connect the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC to the sound system’s HDMI OUT ARC/eARC port—not to an unrelated HDMI input. Enable HDMI-CEC or the manufacturer’s equivalent HDMI-control setting on both devices. The name varies by brand.

- Check that both devices support ARC or eARC and use the labeled ports.
- Confirm the TV’s audio output is set to the external audio system and the soundbar or receiver is on its TV/ARC input.
- Enable HDMI-CEC or the applicable HDMI-control feature on both devices.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Restart the TV and audio system; for an ARC setup, try turning on the TV before the audio device.
- If the TV still does not detect the sound system, temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices to check whether one is interfering.
If only one device supports ARC/eARC, the connection cannot use that feature. Sony recommends using an optical or audio cable instead when the devices have compatible connections. Check the ports and settings before buying a cable or replacing equipment. Sony’s ARC/eARC connection guidance explains this compatibility limit.
Check an optical audio connection
Connect the TV’s optical or digital audio output to the soundbar’s or receiver’s optical input, then select Optical on the audio system. In the TV settings, check that digital audio is being sent through the optical output. Reseat the cable at both ends.

A loose or faulty cable, an incorrect input, device incompatibility, or audio content the devices do not support can all prevent sound. If the devices offer a PCM output setting, trying PCM may help with compatibility; the formats available depend on the equipment and content. See Sony’s optical audio troubleshooting guidance.
Choose a connection both devices support
When more than one connection is available, start with compatible ports and settings. No connection type is a universal fix for every no-sound problem.

Troubleshoot sound missing from one source
If the TV works with other channels, apps, or devices, focus on the source that has no sound. Check that device’s mute, volume, cable, and audio-output format. Test another channel or app before changing general TV settings; an issue limited to one program or app does not establish that the TV’s overall audio settings are wrong.

Some HDMI signal-format options are model-specific, so use the instructions for your TV and source rather than applying a menu path from another brand. Sony’s HDMI-connected device guidance describes these checks.

Isolate whether the TV or soundbar is at fault
If the TV’s own speakers work but the soundbar does not, test the soundbar with another source if one is available. You can also test the TV with another audio device. If the soundbar works with another source, the original TV connection or setup is implicated; if it still produces no sound, the soundbar may need service. These tests narrow down the problem but do not identify a specific failed component.
Samsung recommends trying another device and requesting service if its soundbar still has no sound on that test connection. Sony likewise directs persistent soundbar problems toward repair. Do not open the TV or attempt internal repairs based on a no-sound symptom alone. Samsung’s soundbar troubleshooting guide and Sony’s soundbar troubleshooting guide provide service guidance.
