If Total War: Warhammer III mods are missing, will not activate, crash the game, or behave incorrectly, first identify where the failure occurs: in the launcher, while the game starts, or after a save loads. Then confirm the mod’s local download and game-version compatibility before testing with mods disabled. Reintroduce mods in small groups to isolate interactions; change cached settings only after the simpler checks.
Identify the failure before changing anything
“Mods not working” can describe several different problems, and each points to a different check. Note what happens and when it happens before adjusting your setup.
- Mod does not appear: Check the selected launcher, subscription status, and whether the local mod version has downloaded.
- Mod appears but will not activate: Check its local-version status and whether the manager is selecting the intended entry.
- The game crashes at startup or when loading a campaign: Check recent game or mod updates, then test with mods disabled.
- The game loads but content behaves incorrectly: Test for incompatibility or ordering interactions by narrowing the active mod set.
Record your store or platform, game version, launcher, mod names or Steam Workshop IDs, mod order if relevant, and whether the issue began after an update. A failure at one stage does not by itself prove that two mods conflict.
Confirm the launcher and that the mod is installed
Choose the launcher you actually use
Creative Assembly documented three Steam launch options: the original launcher, the newer WARHAMMER III Mod Manager, and launching the game directly. The announcement described the new manager as an Early Access Steam option with profile saving and sharing, and said the original launcher would remain available while development continued. Availability and features can change, so do not assume that this Steam manager is available on Epic or Windows Store/Game Pass. See Creative Assembly’s Mod Manager announcement.

If you launch directly, you may not see the launcher’s mod controls. If you use a manager, make sure it is the one you intended to use and that the relevant mods are enabled there.
Check subscription and local-version status
For a Steam Workshop mod, being subscribed is not the same as confirming that its files are present and current on your computer. In the newer manager, check the subscription and local-version indicators. Its April 28, 2026 update added searches by mod title, pack filename, and Workshop ID, and addressed confusing selection among entries with the same pack name or checksum. Search by Workshop ID or pack filename if similar entries make the intended mod unclear; wait for a subscribed mod’s local version to appear before treating its absence as an in-game conflict. The manager’s documented features include saving and sharing profiles, manual ordering in Advanced settings, and improvements to automatic ordering. These features do not provide a guaranteed correct order for every combination of mods. The earlier feature thread is Creative Assembly’s Mod Manager feature discussion.
Check whether an update changed compatibility
Compare the start of the problem with the dates of game and mod updates. A mod that worked previously can become incompatible when the game changes, or a mod author may not yet have updated it. SEGA lists outdated mods among possible reasons a Total War game may not work and recommends disabling or deleting mods as a troubleshooting test: SEGA’s Total War Steam troubleshooting guidance.

Creative Assembly’s March 26, 2025 Hotfix 6.1.1 notes warned that “user-generated mods may have compatibility issues with new game updates.” Those notes also documented a fix for a crash involving mod files with uppercase characters in their names. That was a specific issue addressed in that historical patch, not evidence that uppercase names are a general cause of current failures. The same notice recommends verifying game files after a game update or download: Hotfix 6.1.1 notes.
Isolate the mod or combination causing the problem
Use reversible tests so you can return to your existing setup. Save or export your current profile where the manager supports it. The staged approach below is a practical way to narrow the issue; it is not a guarantee that a particular mod or ordering rule is at fault.

- Disable all mods. Keep the game’s launcher and other settings unchanged, then try the same action that previously failed.
- Test the unmodded game. If the problem remains with mods disabled, investigate the game installation or local settings rather than assuming a mod conflict.
- Restore a small group. If the game works without mods, re-enable a manageable group and repeat the same test.
- Narrow the group when the failure returns. Disable part of that group and retest, recording which set reproduces the problem.
- Check ordering only when it is relevant. If the problem changes with mod order, use the manager’s manual ordering controls if available and compare results. There is no universal load order established for arbitrary mod combinations.
Keep notes on the active mods and order for each result. A reproducible result with a smaller set is more useful for deciding what to disable or for asking the mod author or support for help.

Verify files after an update or download
If the problem followed a game update or download, use the game store’s file-verification option. Creative Assembly’s Hotfix 6.1.1 notice specifically directs players to verify game-file integrity; its linked notice does not establish that the same menu path applies to every store, so use the verification control for your platform.

Move the preferences and cache folder only after mod tests
For persistent problems, SEGA recommends backing up the preferences and cache files, then moving the game’s folder from %AppData%RoamingThe Creative Assembly to test for corrupt or incorrectly set cached data. Close the game first. Keep the backup intact so you can restore your files if the test does not help. This changes local settings and cache; it is not a substitute for checking whether a mod itself is compatible.
Gather evidence before contacting support
If the issue remains, provide enough detail for someone else to follow the same case: your store or platform, exact game version, launcher, symptom and when it occurs, mod names or Workshop IDs, load order, and the checks you have already tried. Include a DXDIAG report and crash minidump when available.
