Start by finding a locally unused FM frequency on the car radio, then set the transmitter to exactly the same frequency. If static persists, try another clear channel and temporarily unplug nearby accessories such as chargers. When ordinary radio stations are noisy too, the problem may be the car’s antenna, grounding, or electrical interference—not just the transmitter.
Why an FM transmitter sounds staticky
A car FM transmitter sends audio to the radio over a selected broadcast frequency. If a local station or interference occupies that frequency, it can mask the transmitter’s signal. A mismatch between the transmitter and radio can also cause weak, noisy, or absent audio. Because station availability changes by location, a frequency that works at the start of a drive may become unusable farther along the route. Avantree’s support guidance emphasizes choosing a frequency not used by a local station; Laser Corporation’s FAQ also advises avoiding local station frequencies.
How to troubleshoot transmitter static

Find a clear frequency
Use the car radio’s scan or tuning controls to find a frequency with no music, speech, or identifiable station. Slight background static may remain on an otherwise unused channel. Choose a different frequency if you hear a station or strong interference.

Match the transmitter and radio
Set the transmitter to the exact frequency selected on the car radio. Check both displays before changing other settings; even a small mismatch can weaken or interrupt the audio. The MT02 transmitter manual describes this type of device as sending audio from a wireless device to a car’s FM system.

Try another channel and unplug accessories
If the frequency matches but the static is still strong, scan again and test another clear channel. Temporarily unplug nearby electronic accessories, such as phone chargers, and listen for a change. If the noise changes or disappears, reconnect accessories one at a time to identify whether one of them or its power connection is involved. Avantree recommends this isolation step as a way to check for nearby electronic interference.

Rescan when static returns on the road
If the sound becomes noisy only after you have driven some distance, scan for another unused frequency in the new location and retune both devices. Local station availability can vary along the route.

When the car radio may be the problem
Listen to ordinary FM stations as well as the transmitter. If regular stations also have poor reception, that points toward the car’s radio reception path rather than only a transmitter frequency issue. The antenna connection, grounding, or electrical interference may need attention. Sony’s car-stereo reception guidance discusses antenna connections and recommends having a suspected poor ground checked by an installer. Check that the antenna lead is securely connected to the correct jack; leave installation or grounding work to a qualified car-audio professional.

Some vehicle electrical devices can also interfere with FM reception. Canada’s regulator notes that certain devices, including some LED lights, may cause interference with FM radios. Its radio-interference guidance is relevant when noise affects ordinary radio reception as well as the transmitter.

If static appears only with a wired audio connection
If the transmitter sounds clean until you connect a wired audio source or cable, try a different cable first. For its own transmitter equipment, DAGCO identifies audio-line RF interference as a possible cause and suggests considering a ferrite bead or RF noise filter if changing the cable does not help. This is a conditional option for wired-line noise, not a guaranteed fix for Bluetooth transmitters or every kind of static.

- Contact the transmitter maker if several locally unused frequencies produce static even after you unplug nearby accessories.
- Arrange car-audio service if ordinary radio stations also sound poor, or if the antenna connection or grounding needs inspection.
Replacing the transmitter may make sense if support identifies a fault with the unit, but it will not necessarily solve a congested frequency or interference from the vehicle.
