For one device, start with its power, battery, range, and setup. If several hub-connected devices fail together, check the hub and SmartThings service status before removing devices or resetting anything.
First, work out whether the problem is local or widespread
Note what has stopped working: a single device, several devices connected through the same hub, or broader app controls and automations. This distinction helps avoid disrupting a working setup to fix one faulty device.
- One device is affected: Check that device’s power, battery, wireless range, and product-specific setup.
- Several hub-connected devices are affected: Check the hub’s power and indicator, then review the SmartThings status page. Samsung lists hub connectivity, mobile-app connectivity, device control, and other services as status components.
- Several Wi-Fi devices are affected: Check the phone, router, and local network as well as SmartThings; a shared network issue may affect multiple devices.
If the status page shows a service problem, wait for service to recover rather than repeatedly pairing devices. Samsung’s SmartThings troubleshooting guide covers devices that do not respond, incorrect status, and connectivity checks.
Check power before changing connections
Inspect the hub
Confirm the hub is receiving power and check its LED. Samsung says a flashing or solid magenta light means the hub is updating. Do not unplug or reboot it while that update is in progress.

Restore power to the device
- Plug-in device: Unplug it, wait two minutes, and reconnect it.
- Battery-powered device: Check that the battery is seated correctly. Remove it for 30 seconds, reinsert it, and replace it if depleted. Use the battery type specified for that device.
Check the product’s own indicator or manual as well: an error light or sound may point to a device-side problem rather than a SmartThings connection issue.
Test wireless range and interference
Move the affected wireless device temporarily closer to the hub, with fewer walls or obstacles between them, and check whether its status or control improves. Samsung advises: “The device may be out of range. Try moving it closer to the hub, or extend the wireless range of your network using repeaters.”

If moving it helps, consider changing the device or hub placement or using a compatible repeater. Compatibility and placement matter: a repeater may become part of the route between another device and the hub, so relocating or removing it can disrupt that device’s connection. Verify support for your exact hub and device before buying a range extender; a generic Wi-Fi extender is not a universal fix for Zigbee, Z-Wave, or other device-specific links.
For Zigbee connection trouble, Samsung also advises considering overlap between Wi-Fi and Zigbee channels and checking the router’s Wi-Fi channel. Its guide gives Wi-Fi channels 1, 6, or 11 and Zigbee channels 14–25 as examples. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not a universal channel plan: available settings depend on the router and hub. Samsung additionally recommends placing the hub away from the Wi-Fi router and other wireless electronics.

Check Wi-Fi and the device’s manufacturer app
For a LAN Wi-Fi device, make sure the phone and device are on the same local network during discovery. Some products also need to be set up in the manufacturer’s app before SmartThings can connect to or control them. Samsung’s guide to connecting devices to SmartThings describes setup considerations for supported devices.
- Restart the device, SmartThings app, and phone.
- If multiple LAN devices are affected, check the router and network connection.
- If the Wi-Fi network name or password changed, update the device’s saved network details. Depending on the product, it may instead need to be reset and connected again; follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
Update software before removing and re-adding a device
Check for updates to the SmartThings app and, where applicable, the device’s own app or firmware. If the device still will not respond after power, range, and network checks, remove and add back only the affected device using instructions for its exact type and model.

Some products need a reset or to be excluded from the hub before they can enter pairing mode. A Bluetooth device may also need to be unpaired in the phone’s Bluetooth settings first. Samsung’s device connection instructions and product-specific documentation explain the relevant setup flow. Removing a device can mean setting it up again, so avoid this step if a simpler check has resolved the problem.

If the hub itself is offline or several devices connected through it are unresponsive, use the reboot procedure for that hub generation. Instructions are not universal. Samsung Canada’s hub reboot and reset guide distinguishes v1 from v2/v3; for v2/v3, it describes disconnecting power and Ethernet and waiting two to three minutes before reconnecting, with battery handling where applicable. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than applying this procedure to every hub.

A factory reset, removing a location, or rebuilding automations and multiple devices is a late-stage measure for a broader failure after narrower checks have failed. These actions can require setting up the hub and devices again. Consult the model-specific manual and current app instructions before proceeding.
