A Wi-Fi 7 router cannot guarantee Wi-Fi 7 speeds on every device or in every room. To find the cause of slow performance, compare a wired speed test at the router with Wi-Fi tests nearby and at the problem location. That separates a possible internet-service or Ethernet bottleneck from a wireless coverage, interference, or client-device issue.
1. Record a consistent baseline
Before changing settings, note your internet plan’s expected download and upload rates, the test time, device, location, and whether the connection is wired or wireless. Run the same type of test more than once, keeping the device and location consistent when comparing results. There is no single universal Wi-Fi 7 benchmark that applies to every router, client, plan, and home.

2. Compare wired and nearby Wi-Fi speeds
If possible, connect a computer by Ethernet to the router and run an internet speed test. Then test Wi-Fi on the same device near the router. Use comparable test methods; the purpose is to see whether the slowdown appears before or after the wireless connection.

Inspect every Ethernet cable and port between the modem, router, any switch, and the test computer. A slower component in that path can constrain the wired result. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables for internet speeds above 100 Mbps; replacing a cable is useful only if the current cable or link is limiting performance. Google Home and Nest Help

3. Check the device and Wi-Fi band
A Wi-Fi 7 router does not add Wi-Fi 7 capabilities to an older phone, laptop, or other client. Performance depends on both ends of the connection. If available, check which band the device is using, and consult its specifications for supported Wi-Fi generation and features. A 2.4 GHz connection may not deliver the speeds available on 5 GHz, as Google’s guidance notes. Google Home and Nest Help
Repeat the test with a second reasonably current device in the same place. If only one device is slow, focus on that client’s compatibility, software or drivers, and connection profile rather than assuming the router is at fault.

Check MLO support before relying on it
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is not a universal speed switch: the client must support it, and router behavior can depend on model and firmware. ASUS’s UK support FAQ, last updated March 26, 2025, lists vendor-specific model and firmware requirements and AiMesh limitations. Treat those details as ASUS-specific, and check the current documentation for your own router and client before changing MLO settings. ASUS UK Support

Using the same client, test once near the router and once at the usual slow location. A marked difference is consistent with distance, walls, building materials, or other obstructions reducing the signal. Google recommends improving router placement; when practical, place it centrally and in an open location rather than behind substantial barriers. Google Home and Nest Help

5. Test for congestion and interference
For a controlled comparison, pause unnecessary high-bandwidth activity on the home network and repeat the test. If the router’s automatic channel selection has not helped, try another available channel and compare results at the affected location. Google recommends testing manual channel selection when poor speed or connection persists. Nearby networks and other radio-frequency devices can also affect connection quality. Change one setting at a time and keep track of the previous setting. That makes it easier to tell whether a change improved measured speed or stability rather than simply coinciding with a temporary change in network activity.

6. Treat channel width as a test, not a fix
A wider channel can increase maximum connection speed, but it can also increase interference. ASUS advises weighing that trade-off when aiming for a stable connection. Compare actual speed and stability in the problem location instead of assuming the widest available setting is best. The controls and available options vary by router model and region. - Wired and wireless tests are both slow: Contact your ISP with your results and ask about service problems or plan limits; also check the modem-to-router link and any slow Ethernet segment.
- Wired is good but Wi-Fi is slow in multiple locations: Compare another client, check supported bands and Wi-Fi capabilities, and test channel settings one at a time.
- Wi-Fi is good near the router but slow in one room: Focus on placement, obstructions, distance, and local interference.
- Only one client is affected: Investigate that device’s compatibility, software or drivers, and connection profile.
