If OpenWrt Wi-Fi is slow or keeps dropping, first identify what is failing: the wireless link, access to the local network, or the internet connection. Compare the same client and location under quiet and busy conditions, then change one setting at a time. A wider channel or SQM setting will not fix every kind of slowdown.
Identify what “slow” or “disconnected” means
A Wi-Fi client can lose its connection to the SSID, stay connected but lose access to devices on the local network, or retain local access while internet performance worsens. Those symptoms point to different parts of the network. Wi-Fi capacity is shared, and usable throughput can be reduced by distance, walls, interference, and other devices using the radio; the link rate shown by a device is not the same as the data rate an application receives. OpenWrt’s network-components guide explains these shared-medium and range factors.
- Note the affected client, its location, the band it uses, and whether the problem occurs at particular times.
- Check whether the client still sees the SSID and whether it can reach the router or other local devices.
- Repeat the observation with a second client, preferably close to the access point (AP).
Compare performance before changing settings
Take comparable measurements when the network is quiet and again while the problem is happening. Record both throughput and latency. If possible, compare a wired device with Wi-Fi at the same time and using the same test method. A speed test alone cannot show whether the bottleneck is the radio, router CPU, internet connection, or test server; if a result does not match what you observe, repeat it with another client or test service. OpenWrt’s SQM guide recommends establishing baseline speed and latency and using more than one speed-test application where applicable.
| Comparison | What it can help isolate |
|---|---|
| Wired versus Wi-Fi, at the same time | Whether the wireless segment is implicated or the issue also affects the router or upstream connection. |
| Quiet network versus heavy traffic | Whether latency or throughput changes under load, which can point to saturation or bufferbloat. |
| 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz, with the same client near the AP | Whether the symptom is more pronounced on one band, while accounting for each band’s range and interference conditions. |
| One client versus several | Whether the problem appears client-specific or affects multiple devices on the AP. |
| OpenWrt AP/repeater path versus a direct upstream connection | Whether upstream equipment is involved. OpenWrt specifically advises checking upstream connectivity when its device operates as an AP, repeater, or bridge. |
These are diagnostic comparisons, not guarantees of a particular result. Keep the location and timing as similar as practical, and change only one variable between comparisons.

Check signal, channel, and channel width
Before increasing channel width, check how far the client is from the AP, what obstacles are between them, whether neighboring networks are active, and how many devices share the radio. A less congested legal channel may help, but available channels depend on location and device support. Set the country code to the actual country and use only channels permitted there; OpenWrt warns that an incorrect regulatory setting can be an offense. See OpenWrt’s Wi-Fi setup guidance.
Start with 20 MHz on 2.4 GHz
Wider channels can increase theoretical throughput, but they occupy more spectrum and are more exposed to interference. For 2.4 GHz, OpenWrt generally advises against HT40; try 20 MHz rather than assuming 40 MHz will be faster or more reliable. The relevant wireless configuration guidance is in OpenWrt’s wireless configuration documentation.

Allow for 5 GHz startup checks
When a 5 GHz radio uses channels that require radar checks, startup can be delayed while the radio performs those checks. OpenWrt’s troubleshooting guide notes that a wait of 1–10 minutes may occur. This is a startup delay, not by itself evidence that a connected client is dropping; consult OpenWrt’s internet connectivity and troubleshooting guidance when investigating connectivity problems.

Check for a matching USB 3.0 interference case
If a USB 3.0 storage device is attached to the OpenWrt router and affected devices use 2.4 GHz, disconnect the storage device temporarily and repeat the same test. OpenWrt documents USB 3.0 interference as a possible cause of connection timeouts, stalled connections, or interrupted transfers. If the symptoms change when the device is removed, possible workarounds include using 5 GHz for affected clients or a USB 2.0 drive enclosure. These options are relevant to this specific setup, not general Wi-Fi upgrades. See OpenWrt’s USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi troubleshooting page.

Separate client problems from access-point problems
If drops or throughput changes occur periodically on one desktop but not on other clients, investigate that desktop before changing AP settings. Background network scanning by a desktop network manager can cause periodic throughput drops, as described in OpenWrt’s wireless throughput FAQ. Compare another device on the same SSID in the same place and time; a client-specific symptom is different evidence from a problem affecting several devices.
For intermittent failures, inspect the router’s logs with logread and review wireless status and configuration. Confirm that the Wi-Fi network is attached to the intended network interface. OpenWrt’s connectivity troubleshooting guidance covers checking local connectivity separately from internet access. Avoid a factory reset as the first diagnostic step: it removes configuration but does not identify whether the fault lies with the radio, client, or upstream connection.

Use SQM for latency that rises under load
If web pages, calls, or games become sluggish mainly while someone is uploading or downloading heavily, compare latency when idle with latency under that load. This pattern can indicate bufferbloat: excess delay caused by queues filling as traffic saturates a connection. OpenWrt describes SQM (Smart Queue Management) as a way to mitigate bufferbloat, but SQM is not a remedy for weak signal, radio interference, client driver problems, or a failing radio.
SQM shapes traffic and schedules packets to reduce queuing delay. It may reduce peak throughput and needs sufficient router CPU; OpenWrt also states that SQM is incompatible with hardware flow offloading. If you enable SQM, check the firewall’s flow-offloading configuration and use the measurements in the SQM guide to assess the result.

Treat roaming across multiple APs as a separate issue
If the network has multiple access points, a client that clings to a distant AP or roams poorly needs a roaming and network-design review, not an automatic channel-width change. OpenWrt documents DAWN as a decentralized controller for band steering and describes prerequisites for 802.11k/v in its DAWN and band-steering guide. DAWN is a multi-AP option, not a general speed fix for a single AP.
