If a screenshot shows gray placeholders instead of the content you expected, the capture may have happened before the page finished rendering or loading its data. If the skeleton remains after the page has settled, the application or the request that supplies its content may be failing. The screenshot alone cannot tell you which: check whether the content appears in a normal browser session, then inspect the relevant request and browser console.

First determine whether the screenshot was early or the page is stuck

A screenshot records what is visible at capture time; it does not prove the application has finished rendering. Cypress puts it plainly: “Snapshot commands capture whatever is on screen at that moment.” If rendering, animation, or data loading is still underway, a capture can preserve an intermediate skeleton state. Cypress’s visual testing guide recommends confirming that the page updated before taking a snapshot.

What you observe What it suggests Next check
The expected content appears after a while in a normal session, but the screenshot has placeholders. The capture may be occurring before the relevant rendering or data load completes. Wait for the expected content, not just navigation or the page shell.
The skeleton remains in a normal session too. The page may not be receiving or rendering its content. Inspect the request that supplies the content, its response, and console errors.
The page works normally but fails only in the test runner. A difference in test setup, authentication, data, or—if there is a hydration error—runner interaction with server-rendered markup may be involved. Compare the same URL, account state, viewport, test data, and browser; use the targeted checks below.

These are diagnostic branches, not a root-cause diagnosis. Identifying the cause on a particular site requires its browser behavior, network activity, and console output.

Wait for the content that matters

A navigation event is not necessarily the same as the page’s meaningful content being ready. Cypress documents that cy.visit() waits for the browser’s load event, but it cannot automatically know when every XHR or Ajax request relevant to an application has finished. Playwright likewise discourages using networkidle as a test-readiness condition and recommends web assertions instead. Choose a visible, page-specific condition: the heading, expected table row, or content container that should replace the skeleton.

Cypress: wait for the relevant request, then assert the rendered result

Use the route that actually supplies the expected content; replace the example URL pattern and selector with those from your application.

cy.intercept('GET', '**/api/items').as('getItems');
cy.visit('/items');
cy.wait('@getItems');
cy.get('[data-cy="items-heading"]').should('be.visible');
cy.get('[data-cy="item-row"]').should('have.length.greaterThan', 0);
cy.screenshot('items-loaded');

The request wait confirms that the tracked request completed; the assertions check that the user-visible result exists. If the response succeeds but the assertion times out, inspect the returned data and the application’s rendering path rather than simply increasing the screenshot delay.

Playwright: use a locator assertion before capture

Locator assertions wait for the expected condition, making them a better readiness check than a fixed pause or a generic network-idle state.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('captures the loaded items page', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com/items');
  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Items' })).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page.locator('[data-testid="item-row"]').first()).toBeVisible();
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'items-loaded.png', fullPage: true });
});

Change the URL and locators to match the page. If an expected element can legitimately be absent for an empty result, assert the correct empty-state content instead of requiring a row.

Why a fixed sleep or network idle can mislead

A fixed delay may be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one; neither outcome establishes that the expected content appeared. A page can also keep network connections open for reasons unrelated to the content you need. Playwright’s API defines networkidle as at least 500 ms without network connections, but explicitly discourages it as a testing readiness signal. Use an assertion tied to the page’s expected result. Playwright Page API

If the skeleton never goes away, inspect the content path

  1. Reproduce the exact conditions. Use the same URL, browser, viewport, account state, and test data. Note whether the placeholders eventually change in an ordinary session.
  2. Find the request that should supply the content. In the browser’s developer tools, open Network, reload the page, and identify the relevant request. Check whether it fired, its status, and whether its response contains the expected data.
  3. Read the browser console. Look for JavaScript errors or other failures that could prevent the application from rendering a successful response.
  4. Check access and environment differences. Compare authentication, permissions, environment variables or test configuration, and the data available to the automated session with a working session.
  5. Check the rendered outcome. If the response is successful, determine whether the application handles that payload and whether it should render content, an empty state, or an error state.

Do not infer a network or application failure just from a skeleton screenshot. The relevant request, response, and console evidence distinguishes a slow capture from content that never arrived or never rendered.

Account for content that loads only when visible

Some pages defer non-critical or offscreen content until it approaches or enters the viewport. Google describes this behavior as lazy loading; it is a reason to check visibility-triggered loading, not proof that lazy loading caused a particular screenshot. Google Search Central’s lazy-loading guidance also warns that incorrect implementations can hide content from Google.

If the missing content is below the fold or appears after an interaction, scroll to it or perform the normal interaction before asserting that it loaded. Then assert the resulting content. Do not assume that rendering the initial viewport means all below-the-fold content has been fetched.

Investigate Cypress hydration mismatches only when the evidence points there

If the application is server-rendered React and works in a regular browser but produces a hydration error only under Cypress, consider whether Cypress’s injected bootstrap script changed the document before React hydrated it. Cypress documents a data-cy-bootstrap marker workaround for that specific injection mismatch. It is not a general remedy for skeleton screens; use it only when the documented mechanism and a related hydration error fit the symptoms. Cypress troubleshooting: React hydration mismatch

Make the screenshot repeatable after the page is correct

Once the expected content is present, reduce unrelated variation so visual comparisons are useful:

  • Use stable fixtures or stub relevant network responses where appropriate, as Cypress recommends for repeatable visual tests.
  • Keep the viewport and browser environment consistent.
  • Account for animation and time-dependent content that can change pixels between captures.
  • Assert the expected content before taking the screenshot; visual stability alone does not prove that the right state was captured.

Playwright’s visual comparison guide takes screenshots until two consecutive captures match and saves the last one. That can stabilize the comparison process, but it cannot establish that the intended content loaded; keep the content assertion in place. Playwright visual comparisons

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a screenshot showing a skeleton prove the website is broken?

No. It shows the page state at capture time; check whether the expected content appears in a normal session and inspect the relevant request and console before diagnosing a failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I wait for network idle before taking the screenshot?

Prefer an assertion for the page-specific content you expect. Playwright discourages network idle as a test readiness condition.
