First work out whether the game is rendering slowly or the network is delaying your actions. Choppy visuals usually point toward device load, graphics settings, or game compatibility; delayed responses, teleporting opponents, or disconnections can point toward the connection. These are clues, not a diagnosis. Check whether the problem affects one game or several, then follow the branch that matches how you play.
Identify what “lag” means in your game
Low or unstable frame rates make motion look choppy or the image appear to stutter. Network lag often feels different: your actions arrive late, other players jump or teleport, or the game disconnects. A demanding game or an incompatible title can also behave poorly, so symptoms alone do not prove the cause.
Before changing settings, note your Chromebook’s exact model and the game’s execution path: browser, Android app, locally installed Steam game, or streamed game. Also check whether the trouble is limited to one title or happens across games. A problem in one game may be specific to its settings or device support; trouble across games makes it more useful to check general system load and maintenance first.
Check ChromeOS load and basic maintenance
Inspect Diagnostics
- Open Settings, go to About ChromeOS, and open Diagnostics. Alternatively, search for Diagnostics from the Launcher.
- Review the CPU, memory, and connectivity checks. The CPU graph can help show which applications are using processor resources.
- Do not start with a CPU stress test while trying to play. Google cautions that stress tests can make the Chromebook difficult to use during the test. Google’s Diagnostics guidance explains the available checks.
Update and free up resources
- Check for ChromeOS updates using Google’s slow Chromebook troubleshooting guidance.
- Close browser tabs, apps, and windows you do not need, then test the game again.
- If tabs are refreshing or memory seems constrained, review extensions and disable ones you do not need. Change one thing at a time and retest so you can tell whether it helped.
If the game is installed locally through Steam
Start by checking Google’s current Steam for Chromebook eligibility and device list. Google’s stated minimum requirements are an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. These are eligibility thresholds, not a promise of a particular frame rate. Steam for Chromebook is beta, with limitations, known bugs, performance issues, and limits on which titles are available. Support is model- and game-specific, and the supported list can change.

Reduce the rendering workload
- Lower the game’s resolution, particularly if it is rendering above 1920 × 1080.
- Try Medium or Low graphics settings.
- Close other open windows while playing.
Google recommends experimenting with resolution and graphics settings in its Steam setup and troubleshooting information. Lower settings trade image detail for a potentially lighter rendering workload; they cannot guarantee a specific frame rate.
If you are playing an Android game
Check whether your Chromebook supports the Google Play Store and whether the particular game supports your device. Android apps and games are available on some Chromebooks, and some apps do not work on some models. Google’s Play Store compatibility guidance describes supported devices and app availability.

For games that support Chromebook keyboard and mouse overlays, open the game’s settings, press Ctrl + 8, and adjust key mappings if needed. This changes input controls; it is not a performance fix. See Google’s keyboard and mouse controls guidance for Android games.

If the symptoms point to network lag
Run the connectivity checks in Diagnostics. If the game’s actions are delayed or connections drop, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection where practical. Google explains how to connect a Chromebook to a router using an Ethernet cable or USB adapter in its Ethernet connection instructions. Check that your Chromebook has a compatible port or that the adapter works with your model. A USB-C to Ethernet adapter is relevant only for testing the wired-network branch; it is not a general low-FPS upgrade.

Google names GeForce NOW among services through which games may be obtained using gaming features on certain Chromebooks. That does not mean streaming will fix poor performance: streamed play depends on a reliable connection, and the cited gaming features apply only to named devices. Check Google’s Chromebook gaming features information for device-specific details.

If Diagnostics indicates a CPU or memory failure, or the Chromebook remains slow after updates and the basic load-reduction steps, Google advises contacting the device manufacturer. Use the manufacturer’s support route for your exact model rather than enabling developer or debugging features as routine frame-rate fixes; Google’s Diagnostics guidance and slow Chromebook guidance do not recommend those as standard troubleshooting steps.
