If Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) is lagging or your shots seem not to register, first check Activision’s current service status and MW4 issue reports. Then separate connection symptoms—such as rubber-banding or delayed hit markers—from low frame rate or input delay. MW4 was scheduled to release on October 23, 2026; as of October 3, 2026, the official information available described its beta/pre-release period, so reports and fixes may change quickly.
Check whether MW4 or its services already have a known issue
Before changing router settings, check Activision’s online services status and the current MW4 issue tracking and patch notes. Activision’s beta notes reported issues that can resemble player-side lag, including a hitch during the first PC match, hitching on some PCs when recording software is running, an occasional disconnect, and poor streaming quality at match start. These reports do not establish the cause of an individual player’s problem, but a symptom affecting multiple players may require a game update rather than a home-network change.
Because the MW4-specific information cited here is from the beta period, confirm that an issue is still listed before treating it as current. Activision’s MW4 beta patch notes point players to live issue tracking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdentify what “lag” looks like
Activision’s general Call of Duty guidance describes rubber-banding, stuttering, and delayed hit markers as possible lag symptoms. Ping, or latency, is the time data takes to travel between locations, measured in milliseconds. The symptom alone does not prove whether the cause is your connection, the route to the game service, MW4, or local PC performance.
#1 Best Overall
- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM
- Powerful wired network capacity of up to 20G with one 2.5G WAN port and seven 2.5G LAN ports.
- High-performance quad-core 2.0GHz CPU with robust cooling, 2GB RAM and eight internal antennas providing up to 3000 sq. ft. of range.
- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
- Rubber-banding or teleporting: Your character or other players jump backward or across the map.
- Stuttering or freezing: Movement skips, pauses, or becomes uneven. On PC, this can also be a rendering or game hitch rather than a network problem.
- Delayed hit markers or shots that appear not to register: Note when it happens and whether other connection symptoms occur at the same time. A hit marker, killcam, or single lost gunfight by itself cannot identify the cause.
- Low frame rate or input delay: Aiming or movement feels slow or uneven even when the connection appears stable; investigate local performance as well as network conditions.
Activision’s general advice about lag applies to Call of Duty broadly; it is not a guarantee that a specific MW4 symptom has a particular cause.
Compare connection symptoms with PC performance
On PC: use the benchmark metrics as clues
MW4’s announced PC benchmark tool displays Average FPS, CPU, GPU, Ping, and Input Latency during a simulated multiplayer sequence, if the tool is available in your current build. Record what it shows when the problem occurs. If frame rate or input latency worsens while ping stays stable, focus first on local performance and possible game-side hitches. If ping or any available packet-loss indicator worsens alongside rubber-banding, investigate the connection and service path.

- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
These are diagnostic clues, not an official test with thresholds: Activision’s PC information does not set a ping, frame-rate, or input-latency value that proves a hit-registration fault.

On console: run the platform’s connection test
Use the network test built into your Xbox or PlayStation to check for connection breaks. Activision’s connection guide is for Black Ops 6 rather than MW4, and console menus can vary by platform and software version; check the current console support instructions for the precise menu path.

Try low-risk connection checks one at a time
- Test wired Ethernet if you currently use Wi-Fi. Connect the console or PC directly to your router and compare matches. Activision recommends a wired connection for online Call of Duty play because Wi-Fi reliability and bandwidth can vary. This can help identify local Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix a distant or faulty game server.
- Pause competing network activity. Temporarily stop downloads, video streams, gameplay broadcasts, and other bandwidth-heavy use while testing. Streaming gameplay also uses upload capacity.
- Restart the router. Activision lists this as a basic connection troubleshooting action in its general Black Ops 6 connection guide; it is a general diagnostic step, not a MW4-specific fix.
- Change one thing, then compare. Note whether the symptom returns across matches and whether it changes with the network adjustment. Avoid jumping straight to port forwarding, DMZ settings, or buying a new router: the cited guidance does not establish that those steps fix MW4 lag or hit registration. Activision mentions QoS as a feature available on some routers but does not say it resolves MW4 problems.
Work out whether the issue follows your connection, PC, or MW4
Use these comparisons to narrow the next step; they are practical questions, not an official Activision scoring method.
- Does it track with connection indicators or performance indicators? Rubber-banding that coincides with worsening ping or packet loss points toward the connection or service path. A hitch that coincides with declining FPS or higher input latency, while ping stays stable, points toward local performance or a game issue.
- Does it happen in other online games? Similar symptoms elsewhere make a local network or device issue more plausible; symptoms limited to MW4 make a game-specific issue worth checking. Neither pattern proves the cause.
- Does it recur across matches and network conditions? Record what changes—and what stays the same—rather than relying on one gunfight or match.
- Does it match a current official issue report or update? Compare the timing and circumstances with MW4’s issue tracking and patch notes.
Report a repeatable MW4 problem
If the issue persists or resembles a reported beta problem, use Activision’s MW4 feedback and bug-reporting page. Activision’s guidance says: “A helpful bug report includes what happened, where and when it happened, and steps to reproduce what you experienced.” Include platform and match details if the current form accepts them, and attach a short clip or screenshot only when it helps show the symptom and the form allows it. Activision’s page was updated August 20, 2026.
