If a HomeKit accessory won’t connect to a smart home hub—or appears as “No Response” in Apple Home—start by checking how many devices are affected and whether you are setting up a new accessory or fixing one that already worked. Then check power, compatibility, the connection type, and the active home hub before removing or resetting anything. The right fix depends on the accessory and the exact alert shown in the Home app.

First identify what is failing

Separate a setup failure from a device that was already added to Apple Home but now shows “No Response.” Also note whether the problem affects one accessory, every accessory from one manufacturer, or devices from several manufacturers. Those patterns point toward different checks.

What you see Where to start
One accessory will not add or respond Check its power, compatibility, setup requirements, connection type, and manufacturer firmware.
Several accessories from one manufacturer fail Check that maker’s app, bridge, firmware, and instructions, as well as the affected accessories.
Accessories from several manufacturers fail Check the iPhone, iPad, or Mac used to control the home, shared Wi-Fi, network interference, and hubs or bridges.
The Home app reports “Home Hub Required” or “Software Update Required” Check the active hub and its software in Home Settings.

Apple has separate guidance for accessories from one manufacturer and failures across several manufacturers. For a multi-brand problem, its checks include connecting the controlling iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories and investigating VPN or third-party security software that may interfere. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps for an unresponsive HomeKit or Matter accessory and its guidance for accessories from multiple manufacturers.

If you are setting up a new accessory

Confirm compatibility and setup requirements

  • Check the accessory packaging, manual, or manufacturer app to confirm it supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter. Follow the maker’s setup instructions, including any required bridge or firmware update.
  • Make sure the accessory is powered on and turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad you are using for setup.
  • Bring the accessory closer to the router while pairing, as Apple recommends. Consult the accessory maker if setup still fails.

Apple’s instructions for adding HomeKit and Matter accessories cover these setup checks. If Home says “network is incompatible,” check the accessory’s Wi-Fi specifications: some accessories do not support 5 GHz and may require a network that supports 2.4 GHz. Do not change network bands unless the accessory’s requirements or the alert make that relevant.

Check whether the accessory uses Thread

Thread is relevant only for accessories that use Thread; it is not a requirement for every HomeKit device. Apple says a Thread-based Matter accessory needs a Thread-enabled home hub or a compatible third-party Thread border router. Apple lists Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini as Thread-enabled examples. Verify the accessory’s requirements and Apple’s Matter accessory and home hub compatibility guidance before considering new hardware. A Thread-enabled hub is not a general fix for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, bridge, or manufacturer setup problems.

If an accessory already in Apple Home shows “No Response”

Try lower-risk recovery steps first

  1. Check that the accessory has power. For a battery-powered device, remove and reinsert its batteries if the maker’s instructions allow it.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s app or support instructions for available accessory firmware updates.
  3. Restart the accessory. If it connects through a third-party bridge, restart that bridge as well.
  4. Restart the active home hub. If several manufacturers’ devices remain unresponsive, continue by restarting the modem or router, hubs and bridges, affected accessories, and the controlling iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Apple recommends restarting and checking firmware before removing an unresponsive accessory. Its accessory troubleshooting guide includes further steps for one manufacturer; its multi-manufacturer guide includes the shared-network and broader restart checks.

When to remove and add the accessory again

If the accessory still does not respond after the checks above, remove it from Apple Home and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reset it before adding it again. Reset procedures differ by model, so do not assume a particular button press or hold time will work. Apple’s adding-accessory guidance and the device maker’s instructions can help with re-adding; contact the manufacturer if the reset steps are unclear.

Check HomeKit router restrictions if maker services fail

If the accessory works in Apple Home but its manufacturer app or firmware-update service cannot reach it, check the router’s HomeKit security setting. Apple warns that Restrict to Home can prevent an accessory from contacting third-party services, including services used for firmware updates. In the Home app, open Home Settings, choose Wi-Fi Network & Routers, select the accessory, and review its access setting. Apple’s HomeKit-secured router guidance describes the options. Automatic allows connections the manufacturer recommends, so it may enable more access than Restrict to Home.

What to provide when you need device-specific help

If the problem continues, give Apple or the manufacturer the accessory’s make and model, whether it uses Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, or a bridge, whether other accessories are affected, and the exact Home app alert. Those details help distinguish an accessory-specific reset or firmware issue from a shared hub or network problem.
