If Helldivers 2 makes your CPU run hot, first determine whether the game is closing, Windows is reporting an error, or the entire PC is shutting down. A crash during play does not prove the game caused overheating—or that overheating caused the crash. Check your processor’s temperature and clock behavior under load, compare them with the limit for your exact CPU model, then work through cooling checks and Arrowhead’s game-specific troubleshooting steps.
Identify what is happening before changing anything
“Helldivers 2 thermal crashes” can describe different failures, and the distinction matters. A game closing to the desktop is not the same symptom as a blue screen or a PC that powers off. None of these outcomes alone confirms overheating.
- Only the game closes: Note any error message and whether the failure happens in other games or demanding applications.
- Windows reports an error or blue screen: Record the message or stop code. This is evidence to investigate, not proof of a temperature problem.
- The whole PC shuts down: Record what happened immediately beforehand and whether it occurs under other demanding workloads.
Write down your CPU model, CPU temperature and clock readings while playing, and whether monitoring reports throttling. These observations help distinguish a thermal symptom from a game-specific problem; they do not by themselves diagnose the cause.
Check CPU temperature against your processor’s own limit
Monitor CPU temperature and clock speed while reproducing the problem. Compare the temperature with the limit specified for your exact processor model by its manufacturer. There is no single safe temperature threshold for every CPU, and the available sources do not establish a Helldivers 2-specific limit.

Steam notes that a monitoring tool may not display a temperature above a processor’s limit because modern CPUs can reduce their speed to avoid overheating. A falling clock speed under load may be relevant, but it is not a diagnosis on its own. Steam’s general guidance is available in its hardware performance troubleshooting article.
Inspect cooling and airflow if readings point to heat
If temperature readings approach the limit for your CPU, check whether the cooling system is operating correctly and whether the computer can draw in cool air. Steam identifies dust, blocked vents and poor access to fresh air as possible cooling problems; it lists better ventilation and a better heat sink among possible hardware fixes.

- Check that the PC’s air intakes and exhausts are not blocked by a wall, furniture, or nearby objects.
- Look for dust buildup at vents and on accessible cooling components.
- Check that the fans are turning and that the heat sink or other installed cooling system appears to be operating normally.
- Make sure the computer has unobstructed access to cool air; its placement and surrounding space can affect airflow.
Do not assume that replacing a cooler or applying new thermal paste will solve the issue without identifying a cooling problem. If inspection confirms that the current heat sink is inadequate or faulty, choose any replacement for the actual system: verify CPU socket compatibility, case height or radiator clearance, cooling capacity suitable for the processor, noise, and installation constraints. A cooler is a conditional hardware fix, not a Helldivers 2-specific remedy.
Follow Arrowhead’s troubleshooting steps for Helldivers 2
Once you have recorded the symptoms, use Arrowhead’s game-specific sequence. Its General Tech troubleshooting tips, updated September 1, 2026, recommend these steps:

- Check the minimum requirements. Compare your PC’s specifications with the game’s minimum requirements. Steam’s listing, retrieved October 7, 2026, gives an Intel Core i7-4790K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X as the minimum processor, with 8 GB RAM. Its recommended specifications list an Intel Core i7-9700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and 16 GB RAM. These are listed requirements, not a diagnosis of a temperature problem; check the live Steam listing in case they change.
- Update relevant PC drivers. Arrowhead specifically includes motherboard and GPU drivers among the drivers to update.
- Verify the Steam game files. In Steam, open Library, right-click Helldivers 2, choose Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the check to complete before testing again.
- Clear the Arrowhead AppData folder contents. Press Windows key + R, enter
%appdata%, and press Enter to open the relevant roaming AppData location. Find the Arrowhead folder and clear its contents, following Arrowhead’s instructions. - Try the other Async Compute setting. Arrowhead suggests testing Async Compute enabled or disabled; which setting helps depends on the hardware. Change the setting and test rather than assuming one value is best for every PC.
- Reinstall if specifications and drivers are fine. Arrowhead recommends fully uninstalling and reinstalling the game if the PC meets specifications and its drivers are up to date.

A “Helldivers 2 high CPU temp” report is a reason to measure temperatures and clock behavior during play, not enough to establish that the game is overheating a particular PC. The official guidance supports two separate paths: Steam’s general advice to investigate processor limits, cooling and airflow, and Arrowhead’s steps for game-specific technical problems. Without the computer’s hardware details and sensor readings, neither path can identify an individual system’s cause.
