A “frame-switch failure” means a model mishandled the LOCAL-versus-WORLD movement rules, or failed the benchmark’s required output format. To diagnose a result, check the active frame, trace each turn and movement in order, then assess pose accuracy separately from JSON compliance.
What LOCAL and WORLD mean in FrameFlip48
FrameFlip48 tests whether models track translation frames in short robot-motion programs. In WORLD mode, movement uses fixed east-and-north axes. In LOCAL mode, the movement axes rotate with the robot’s current heading. A turn changes the robot’s heading around its center; it does not move that center.
Jaye Nichols’s October 2, 2026 report describes 48 cases arranged as 24 matched pairs. Each pair uses the same numbers and commands, with one prompt setting ACTIVE_FRAME = LOCAL and its counterpart setting ACTIVE_FRAME = WORLD. The paired design tests whether a model follows the stated frame rather than applying one frame by habit. Read Nichols’s benchmark report.
How to diagnose a frame-switch failure
- Read the active-frame setting. Use the prompt’s explicit
ACTIVE_FRAMEvalue; do not infer the frame from a coordinate that looks plausible. - Trace turns in sequence. Update heading after each turn, but leave position unchanged unless a movement command occurs.
- Apply each movement using the current frame and heading. WORLD uses fixed east/north directions. LOCAL uses axes rotated to the robot’s heading at that point in the command sequence.
- Write down intermediate poses. Recording position and heading after each command makes it easier to see where a frame assumption diverged.
- Compare the terminal pose. Check both final position and normalized heading against the expected pose. For a matched pair, repeat the trace with the counterpart’s frame setting; the identical commands can produce different positions.
- Check output format separately. A response can contain a correct pose but still fail strict scoring if it does not satisfy the requested JSON contract.
Why changing the frame changes the final position
Nichols’s example starts at (2, -1), facing east, then turns 90 degrees counterclockwise and applies MOVE(3, 2). The turn changes the heading to 90 degrees without moving the starting position. Under WORLD, the reported final position is (5, 1); under LOCAL, it is (0, 2). Both final headings are 90 degrees. The coordinates differ because the movement axes are fixed in WORLD and follow the new heading in LOCAL.

Did the model get the pose wrong, or only the JSON format?
Separate the response’s contents from its compliance with the requested format. Nichols reports a frozen strict score that required the specified JSON output contract, and a distinct post-hoc analysis that extracted terminal-pose JSON from responses. The post-hoc counts are diagnostic pose-extraction results, not replacements for the strict leaderboard scores.

These figures describe the particular server comparison and scoring methods Nichols reported; they are not a current ranking of general model capability. The large gap for Claude between strict pair scoring and post-hoc pose extraction illustrates why format compliance and pose reasoning should be examined as separate questions.

What FrameFlip48 can and cannot establish
Nichols describes the benchmark as a small synthetic test limited to 2D quarter-turn motion. Its 24 pairs are mathematically dependent, each case had one response, and platform defaults differed. The results therefore do not measure run-to-run variance, establish broad model rankings, or show how a model or robot will perform in real-world robotics. The report also mentions an earlier 10/48 Flash-Lite SDK validation; that is separate from its server comparison.
As Nichols puts it: “This is a small synthetic test of 2D quarter-turn motion, not a robotics reliability certificate.” The report is the benchmark author’s account, not an independent replication or manufacturer support document.

If you mean a physical device
The available FrameFlip48 account does not describe hardware, setup, repair parts, or a physical switch. If a device you own uses this name, identify its manufacturer and model from the label or its documentation before following product-specific troubleshooting steps; the benchmark findings do not provide a basis for repairing it.

Nichols’s report says the original code is MIT-licensed and the original synthetic data is CC0-1.0, while the public Kaggle collection is published under Apache 2.0 terms. Check the current repository and collection license records before reusing or redistributing materials, since the report does not substitute for those current records.
