When a self-hosted cloud drive will not sync, first determine whether the problem is account access, a particular desktop client, or a specific file. Preserve both local and server copies before changing sync settings or resetting anything. The steps below use Nextcloud and Seafile as documented examples; their settings and error behavior are not interchangeable, so confirm your product and version first.
Identify where synchronization is failing
Record the server product and version, desktop client version, operating system, exact error text, and when the failure occurred. Note whether it affects one file, one library or folder, one client, or every client. That pattern helps separate a file-level issue from connectivity, authentication, or server trouble.
- Try signing in to the cloud drive in a browser. Nextcloud’s administrator manual recommends checking browser access first. If the site is unavailable, investigate server availability and network access before troubleshooting a desktop sync client. Nextcloud: General troubleshooting.
- If browser access works but desktop clients cannot sync, check the desktop client’s connection to the service it uses. Nextcloud desktop sync uses WebDAV; a WebDAV configuration problem is one possible cause. An administrator or experienced user can make a more detailed WebDAV check using a command-line client such as
cadaverand a PROPFIND request. Nextcloud: General troubleshooting. - Compare the scope: failures across all files or clients point toward connectivity, authentication, WebDAV, server health, a proxy or firewall, or server permissions. A failure limited to selected files more often warrants checking their names, paths, open or locked state, local permissions, and server-side write access.
Diagnose failed uploads
Connection closed or upload interrupted
In Nextcloud, a “Connection closed” upload message can be related to chunk size or timeout settings. The administration manual documents client settings named chunkSize, minChunkSize, maxChunkSize, and targetChunkUploadDuration. Their appropriate values depend on the installed client version and infrastructure. Check the documentation for that version and change one value at a time rather than copying a setting from another installation. Nextcloud: General troubleshooting.
Failed to upload file blocks
Seafile’s FAQ associates “Failed to upload file blocks” with network or firewall settings that interfere with batched file blocks. Review relevant firewall, proxy, and network rules with the server administrator; avoid assuming that a Nextcloud chunk setting applies to Seafile. Seafile FAQ.

One file fails while others sync
Check the filename and path against the operating system and server’s rules. Seafile documents Windows-invalid filename characters, names ending in a space or period, files locked by another process, and libraries that are read-only or cloud-only as possible causes. Also confirm the local sync folder is writable and the client has enough disk space. Seafile FAQ.
Permissions, open files, and local interference
Confirm that your account can write to the server library and that local permissions allow the sync client to read and update the file. Close applications that may be holding a file open. If antivirus software appears to interfere with indexing or metadata, check its logs and the client’s errors before changing its configuration.

For Nextcloud’s local storage backend, the server data directory must remain under Nextcloud’s exclusive management. Do not move, edit, or delete files there manually to try to force synchronization. Nextcloud: General troubleshooting.
Resolve a conflict without losing either version
A conflict occurs when the local and remote copies change before the client can reconcile them. Nextcloud explains that the client cannot resolve that situation automatically. It keeps the remote file at the original filename and creates a local conflicted copy containing the local edits. By default, that extra copy is not uploaded to the server. Nextcloud: Conflicts.

- Pause or avoid further edits to both versions while you inspect them.
- Open the server-side original and the local conflicted copy. Compare their contents and identify changes that need to be retained.
- Merge the required edits into the intended final file, then verify the result on the server and on the local device.
- Remove the extra conflict copy only after confirming that no needed edits remain in it.
Seafile also preserves competing content as a conflict file whose name includes the author’s email and a timestamp. When an existing local folder is synced with a Seafile library, its manual says differing contents produce conflict files rather than overwriting or losing either version. Verify the expected files are present before deleting, unlinking, or resyncing anything. Seafile: Syncing client.
Collect useful evidence before escalation
Capture the exact error and time of occurrence, plus product, server, client, and operating-system versions. Nextcloud provides a desktop log window and a debug archive, as well as a server log. Logs can contain sensitive information; redact credentials, tokens, private paths, and personal data before sharing them. Nextcloud Desktop Client: Troubleshooting.

- For a failure on all devices, include whether browser access worked and whether WebDAV checks succeeded.
- For a file-specific failure, include the path and filename after removing private details, its size if relevant, and whether it was open or locked.
- Include timestamps so client and server log entries can be matched.
Avoid risky resets and manual cleanup
Do not sync the same directory simultaneously with Nextcloud and another synchronization application; Nextcloud says this is unsupported and can cause data loss. Keep the Nextcloud server data directory exclusively managed by Nextcloud. Nextcloud: General troubleshooting.
Do not delete a sync database, reset an account, unlink a library, or launch a full resync as a generic first fix. Those actions can change sync state or make local-only edits harder to recover. Nextcloud documents deleting a per-account .sync_xxxxxxx.db file only for a particular “CSync unknown error,” and warns that doing so also removes some settings about which files to download. In Seafile, a server-side deletion can move a folder containing local changes that have not yet uploaded into the local recycle-bin location. Check the client error and preserved files before cleaning up or emptying a recycle bin. Seafile FAQ.
