To find out why checkout is failing, match the affected checkout step and time to application errors, request traces, payment-provider events, and uptime checks. A checkout error alone does not tell you whether the cause is your code, an API, a database, a payment provider, or a third-party script.

Start by scoping the checkout failure

Before changing code or configuration, capture enough detail to connect a customer’s symptom to your monitoring data. Record:

  • The affected checkout step, such as loading the cart, submitting payment, or confirming the order.
  • The approximate time and timezone, browser or app, and the affected release or version if known.
  • The payment method and the exact visible error, without recording card data, secrets, or unnecessary personal information.
  • Whether the problem affects every customer or only a particular browser, region, payment method, or other subset.

This scope helps distinguish a broad outage from a failure limited to one route, release, provider, or customer segment.

Check endpoint availability and recent changes

Review uptime checks for the checkout endpoint and any adjacent service that must work for an order to complete. A successful check of the site’s home page does not prove that a checkout API or payment callback is healthy. Compare any failed checks with deployments and configuration changes around the incident time.

Uptime monitoring answers whether a configured endpoint responded to a health check; it does not, by itself, explain why a real checkout request failed. In a February 11, 2025 product article, Sentry described HTTP checks of configured URLs every 60 seconds and geographically distributed checks. These are vendor-specific descriptions, not universal monitoring standards; verify current behavior and plan limits before relying on them. See Sentry’s uptime monitoring article.

Use errors and traces to locate the failing component

Search application errors around the reported time, then group them by route, release, and checkout step. A stack trace and request context can point to a code fault; a distributed trace can show where a request begins to fail or slow down as it crosses services.

Follow the checkout request through the browser, application, database, and external payment or script calls. Look for errors or delays at the first failing boundary rather than assuming the final customer-facing message identifies the cause. Sentry’s ecommerce monitoring overview describes using stack traces, breadcrumbs, device and user context, session replay, and traces to investigate issues such as delayed APIs, database queries, and third-party scripts. Apply privacy controls appropriate to the data your checkout handles.

Inspect payment events and webhook delivery

If a Stripe webhook may be involved, inspect the event’s delivery attempt rather than inferring provider health from the checkout symptom alone.

  1. In Stripe’s dashboard, open the relevant webhook endpoint and select its Failed tab.
  2. Choose the failed event and review the delivery attempt, HTTP status code, and response.
  3. Use that response and status to identify the failure condition and investigate the corresponding server or application logs.
  4. Confirm that your application handled the event, even if Stripe retries delivery. Stripe says failed deliveries are retried several times; retries do not establish that the underlying fault is fixed.

Stripe’s webhook delivery troubleshooting guidance explains how to inspect failed attempts and distinguish delivery conditions.

When Stripe reports a timeout

A Stripe webhook marked “Timed out” means Stripe established a connection to your server, but the server took too long to respond. Stripe recommends acknowledging receipt promptly with a 2xx response, then handling lengthy work asynchronously. Check server logs and resource use, including CPU, memory, and disk capacity, when investigating the delay. Do not hold the webhook response open while performing slow downstream work. See Stripe’s guidance on investigating timed-out webhooks.

Confirm that the fix worked

After making a change, verify the same signals you used to diagnose the incident:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Complete the affected checkout step successfully.
  • Confirm the relevant payment-provider event is delivered and handled by your application.
  • Check that errors or trace latency return to their expected range.
  • Verify that the relevant endpoint’s uptime check is healthy.
  • Keep an incident timeline so future failures can be compared with releases and dependency events.

Choose monitoring based on the questions you need answered

Error tracking, tracing, and uptime checks are complementary. When evaluating tools, compare the capabilities that matter to your checkout rather than relying on a single uptime badge or a vendor ranking:

  • Whether browser and backend errors are covered.
  • Whether traces connect a checkout request to databases and third-party calls.
  • What session context is available and how it can be limited to protect privacy.
  • The uptime-check interval, timeout, check regions, and alert controls.
  • Integrations with your framework and incident workflow.
  • Data retention, access controls, and total cost.

The cited Sentry materials are product descriptions, not an independent comparison of monitoring tools. Check current documentation and configuration before using a vendor’s stated features or intervals as selection criteria.
