If photos look blurry when you use your phone’s periscope or telephoto camera, first check whether the blur is limited to that camera and note the zoom level and subject distance. Clean the camera glass, remove anything covering it, then test a distant, stationary subject in good light. If only that camera stays blurry after these checks, or you see damage or haze inside the camera, contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider.
First find out when the blur occurs
Compare photos from the normal, ultra-wide, and telephoto views. Note the zoom setting where softness begins, whether the subject is near or far, and whether the scene is dim or moving. This helps separate a problem limited to one camera from blur caused by the scene, the camera app, or general movement.
A displayed zoom level does not necessarily mean the phone has switched to a physical telephoto lens. Switching behavior varies by model and software, so check the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact phone if you need to identify which camera is active.

- Several views are blurry: Check for a general obstruction or scene movement, and compare results in bright light with the phone held steadily.
- Blur starts at close range or high zoom: Move farther from the subject and reframe. Telephoto cameras may not focus at close distances.
Clean the camera window and remove obstructions
Take off a case, lens cover, or protective film if it overlaps the camera area. Gently wipe the camera glass and nearby area with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth; a cloth you already have is usually sufficient. Google notes that dirt or obstruction can cause blur, halos, lines, or color distortion, while Samsung warns that camera protectors can interfere with focus or distort light.

After cleaning, take a new photo before changing settings. This makes it easier to tell whether the obstruction or accessory was contributing to the problem. See Google Pixel Camera Help’s advice on photo and video quality and Samsung’s Galaxy camera troubleshooting guidance.
Move farther from close subjects
Telephoto cameras are intended for distant subjects and may not focus when you are too close. Step back and reframe with zoom rather than moving the phone closer. The minimum focusing distance depends on the device and camera module; do not assume a distance published for one phone applies to another.

Samsung Singapore’s support page, last updated July 23, 2026, gives model-specific examples: a 30 cm minimum for the Galaxy S25 Ultra 5x telephoto camera and 80 cm for the Galaxy S26 Ultra 5x telephoto camera. These are examples for those named models, not universal periscope-camera limits. For your phone’s supported distance, consult its own manufacturer documentation. Xiaomi also identifies minimum distance as a possible cause of telephoto focus problems in its REDMI Note 13 Pro telephoto FAQ.

Test in good light and keep the scene still
Try a well-lit, stationary subject and hold the phone steadily. Hand movement and subject movement can both blur a photo; low light can make telephoto focusing more difficult. Compare a bright, still scene with a dim or moving one to see whether the conditions explain the difference. Google recommends a tripod or stable surface for features that require the phone and subject to remain still.

Set focus deliberately and take more than one frame
If your camera app supports it, tap the main subject in the viewfinder and wait for the focus indication to settle before taking the photo. Then capture a few frames under the same conditions. A single soft image does not by itself establish a hardware fault; incorrect focus is one documented reason a subject can appear blurry. Google’s Pixel Camera guidance covers focus and stability checks.

- Restart the phone. Reopen the camera app and repeat the test on a distant, stationary subject in good light.
- Check for app and system updates. Use the update options available on your phone; menu names and locations differ by manufacturer. Xiaomi lists app or system software problems among possible causes of telephoto focus trouble.
- Inspect the camera glass. Look for scratches or cracks. Also note any condensation or haze that appears to be inside the camera rather than on its outer surface.
- Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the problem persists. This is especially appropriate when blur remains isolated to one camera after the checks above, or when the glass is damaged or the camera appears internally fogged.
Samsung and Google both advise checking for camera-window obstruction and physical issues; Samsung also discusses condensation. Their instructions are model-specific, so use the support page for your phone rather than applying another model’s settings. See Samsung Support and Google Pixel Camera Help.
