To find out whether a mod is behind an Batman: Arkham Knight crash, first launch the game with all mods, graphics-changing tools, and overlays disabled. If it runs, restore changes one at a time and repeat the same action that caused the crash. If the unmodified game still fails, investigate the game installation, drivers, settings, and background software instead.
1. Record the failure and protect your files
Before changing anything, note when the crash occurs: at launch, while loading, in a particular scene, or after applying a visual change. Record your storefront, installed mod names and versions, and any recent game or graphics-driver updates. Back up saves and custom configuration before removing files or resetting settings.

Timing helps make the comparison meaningful: after each change, repeat the same action that previously triggered the failure.

Temporarily disable every mod and graphics-changing tool, along with overlays, FPS counters, and recording software. Warner Bros. support recommends disabling third-party tools or tweaks that adjust game graphics and game-overlay programs because they can conflict with the game. Launch the game and check whether the same failure occurs:
- If it still crashes: the failure is not isolated to the disabled mods. Continue with the configuration and non-mod checks below.
- If it works: a mod, graphics tool, overlay, or interaction among them becomes a plausible suspect. Re-enable changes individually to narrow it down.
3. Isolate a mod or graphics tool
- Keep all changes disabled, then enable one mod or tool.
- Restart the game and repeat the same action that previously triggered the crash.
- Record whether the failure returns. Disable that change before testing the next one.
- Check the mod author’s current installation instructions, dependencies, and compatibility notes before reinstalling or updating it.
This one-at-a-time approach is a diagnostic method, not a guarantee that a mod is defective: the failure could depend on an interaction, and a result with one setup does not establish the exact cause. Do not assume a mod remains compatible after a game patch. Warner Bros. warned in its October 30, 2015 PC update: “Please note that we cannot guarantee compatibility between patches when using 3rd party tools that modify the game files.” That is a historical publisher warning, not a current compatibility assessment of any specific mod. 4. Reset configuration and verify Steam files
If the clean game still fails, or modified configuration files may be involved, Warner Bros. documents a configuration reset and file-integrity check:
- Close the game.
- Back up custom settings, then delete the
BMGame/Configfolder. - In Steam, verify the game’s file integrity. Exact tab wording can vary as the Steam client changes.
- Relaunch the game and check whether the failure remains.
WB’s file-verification instructions and its archived patch announcement describe this recovery path; the announcement says Steam can redownload the configuration files. Verification checks the installation’s integrity, but it does not identify which mod caused a crash.

5. Check common non-mod causes
If the crash persists with mods and graphics tools disabled, work through the general troubleshooting factors WB identifies:
- Graphics settings: lower them and see whether stability improves.
- Drivers: check for current video and sound drivers. If the problem began after a driver update, consider rolling back.
- Windows and DirectX: check for Windows updates that include DirectX components.
- Overclocking: return overclocked components to their manufacturer settings.
- Antivirus and background apps: check whether security software quarantined a game file or whether another application is interfering.
These checks are not proof of a single cause; change one factor at a time where practical so you can tell whether the result changes. WB’s troubleshooting page covers these general checks.

6. Get help with a useful report
If the clean game still crashes after these checks, include the details that help distinguish a mod conflict from an installation or system problem:
- When the crash occurs and any error text shown
- Your storefront and the mod names and versions you used
- Recent game or driver updates
- Whether the failure occurs with all mods, graphics tools, and overlays disabled
- Whether configuration reset and Steam file verification changed the result
Contact WB support or use the game’s Steam product support and community links. Community posts can suggest leads, but an old workaround is not confirmation that it is safe or compatible with your current game version.
