When an ApiFlash screenshot looks blank, first check the HTTP status and response body: the file may contain an API error rather than an image. Then compare extracted page content with the screenshot, check when ApiFlash was told to capture, and isolate access, headers, and cache state. A blank capture alone does not identify one cause.
1. Check whether the response is an image or an API error
Inspect the HTTP status code and response body before opening the saved file. If your code saves every response body with an image extension, an error message can look like a corrupt or blank screenshot.

ApiFlash documents that a 400 response includes a meaningful error message. Treat the status and body as the first evidence, not the file extension.
2. Validate the request before changing page timing
- Use a complete target URL with an
http://orhttps://scheme. - URL-encode the target URL when sending it as a parameter.
- Send a valid
access_key. - ApiFlash accepts both GET and POST requests.
Correct these inputs first. Otherwise a capture failure can be mistaken for a rendering problem.

3. Separate page-content problems from screenshot-output problems
For diagnosis, request JSON using response_type=json together with extract_html=true and/or extract_text=true. ApiFlash documents these extracted fields in the JSON response.
- Extracted content is present, but the image is blank: the capture process could access page content, so investigate rendering readiness, presentation, and whether the returned image is stale.
- Extracted content is missing: investigate the target URL, access requirements, and page behavior. This result does not, by itself, prove which one is responsible.
This comparison narrows the problem; it is not a guaranteed diagnosis. Record the response status, JSON body, extracted content, and screenshot together.
4. Wait for the content the page actually needs
Choose a page-load condition
ApiFlash defaults wait_until to network_idle. Its documented alternatives are dom_loaded and page_loaded. A page that continues to load requests or updates content after its initial document is ready may need a different wait condition.

Wait for a known element
If the expected content has a stable CSS selector, use wait_for with that selector. ApiFlash says it aborts with an error if the selector does not match within 15 seconds. A selector timeout is useful evidence: verify that the selector is correct and that the element appears for the same access context as the capture.

The ApiFlash FAQ recommends delay for extra time in cases such as animations. The documented maximum is 10 seconds. Prefer a meaningful wait_for selector or wait_until condition where possible; a fixed delay adds time without proving that the target content became ready.
5. Isolate authentication and custom headers
A page that works in your browser may require cookies, a request header, a signed token, or an automated login flow when accessed by a screenshot service. ApiFlash’s guide index lists approaches for authenticated pages. Test the same URL with and without authentication where appropriate, and add credentials only through the mechanism the target site requires.

ApiFlash warns that custom headers apply to all requests and may block external fonts. Its FAQ suggests self-hosting fonts or using cookies for authentication. Missing fonts do not establish why a whole capture is blank, but removing custom headers temporarily can help isolate a request-wide side effect.
6. Rule out cached output and quota limits
Bypass a possibly old screenshot
Retry with fresh=true to bypass an old screenshot. Compare the fresh response with the original rather than assuming every repeated output is newly rendered.

Check quota and throttling
Successful capture responses include quota headers. ApiFlash also documents a quota endpoint that reports the limit, remaining count, and reset time. A 402 indicates exhausted monthly quota; a 429 indicates excessive request volume. Distinguish these service limits from a page that loaded but rendered no visible content.

7. Use a repeatable diagnostic sequence
- Save the evidence: capture the HTTP status, response headers, response body, request parameters with secrets removed, and the resulting file.
- Validate the inputs: confirm the complete, encoded URL and valid key; check whether the status indicates a request, plan, quota, rate, or internal error.
- Request JSON extraction: use
response_type=jsonwithextract_html=trueand/orextract_text=true, then compare the returned content with the image. - Adjust readiness: test the documented
wait_untilchoices or wait for a known selector. Use a delay only for a demonstrated timing need. - Isolate page access: test required cookies or authentication and temporarily remove custom headers that may affect page dependencies.
- Request fresh output: use
fresh=true; check quota information and avoid rapid repeated failures.
Change one variable at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a result changed because of timing, access, headers, or caching.
