A timeout on a large-page screenshot can mean the browser is still loading, the screenshot operation exceeded its own deadline, the MCP server stopped the request, the client quit waiting, or the captured image was too large to return. Diagnose which stage failed before raising timeouts: try a viewport or element capture, reduce image size where possible, and inspect the browser state before retrying.
Identify which timeout or failure you are seeing
Record the MCP tool name, the exact error code and message, whether navigation completed, and whether the server returned an error or the client merely stopped waiting. A screenshot request crosses several boundaries, and changing one deadline may not affect the others.
- Navigation: the browser has not finished loading or reaching the requested page state.
- Action or capture: navigation may be complete, but the screenshot action or a wait condition has not completed.
- Server deadline: the MCP server or hosted browser service ends the operation at its own limit.
- Client deadline: the MCP client stops waiting before the server finishes or responds.
- Response delivery: capture may have succeeded, but returning the image inline exceeds a size limit. Look for an explicit response-size error rather than assuming the browser timed out.
Check the documentation and active configuration for the exact server and client you use. The Model Context Protocol itself does not give every implementation the same timeout values.
Playwright MCP defaults are implementation settings
Microsoft’s Playwright MCP repository documentation, in the edition accessed in 2026, lists a 5,000 ms default action timeout, a 60,000 ms default navigation timeout, and a 500 ms post-action settle interval. These are Playwright MCP defaults, not universal MCP limits; flags, configuration, and version can change them. Compare the running server’s settings with your client’s call deadline. Hosted service limits are separate
Microsoft’s Playwright Workspaces remote MCP documentation accessed in 2026 lists a 3 minutes 30 seconds command timeout. That limit applies to the documented service, not to local Playwright MCP or other remote browser tools. The same documentation distinguishes a ToolTimeout from an OutputTooLarge response. Reduce the capture before increasing deadlines
A full-page screenshot can involve a very tall image and substantial image data. First test whether you need the whole document. Playwright MCP supports viewport, target-element, and full-page captures; its documented interface does not combine full-page and element capture. Microsoft also recommends JPEG, viewport capture, or an element target when a screenshot is oversized. Exact options depend on the MCP server you run. | Capture choice | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | You need to inspect what is visible in the current browser window. | Does not include content outside the viewport. |
| Target element | You need a particular chart, panel, article section, or other page region. | Requires a supported element-target option and a reliable target. |
| Full page | Visual evidence from the entire document is essential. | May create a much larger image and take longer to capture or return. |
Choose format and scale for the task
Playwright’s screenshot options document PNG, JPEG, and WebP, as well as CSS-pixel and device-pixel scale. CSS scale produces CSS-pixel output; device scale produces higher-resolution output tied to device pixel ratio and can increase image size. Use CSS scale when device-pixel detail is unnecessary. JPEG can reduce output size when some compression is acceptable; prefer a lossless format when exact visual detail matters. Formats vary by implementation: Microsoft’s remote Playwright service documentation lists PNG or JPEG, so do not assume every server accepts WebP. Tell an oversized response from a slow capture
An image can be captured successfully but fail on the way back to the client. For Microsoft’s documented remote Playwright Workspaces MCP service, the inline screenshot base64 limit is 768 KiB in the 2026-accessed documentation. This is a service-specific limit, not an MCP-wide cap. If the error is OutputTooLarge, reduce the output with a viewport or element capture, or use JPEG if supported; increasing the navigation timeout will not resolve an inline response limit.

Some tools can save screenshots to a file rather than include image data in the response. Playwright MCP documents a filename option and a server option to omit image responses. Use that route only if your MCP client or environment can access the saved artifact. Playwright MCP documentation · Microsoft remote MCP guidance
Use a page snapshot when you need text or structure
If your goal is to read headings, links, labels, or page structure, request an accessibility snapshot instead of an image. Playwright describes snapshots as a better fit for understanding page text and structure. A screenshot is the right evidence when you need to inspect layout, a chart or canvas, or a visual rendering defect. Snapshot output can also be large: Microsoft’s remote service documents truncation and recommends smaller depth or targeted alternatives when snapshot text is too large. Inspect browser state before retrying
After a timeout, check whether the browser session is still available and what page it currently shows. Microsoft’s remote MCP guidance says, “If the session remains available, observe the page before deciding whether to retry.” This avoids treating an uncertain operation as if it definitely never ran. In particular, Microsoft warns against blindly retrying a timed-out click. For a read-only screenshot, a single bounded retry with a smaller target may be reasonable after confirming the session state. Microsoft remote MCP guidance

- Capture the evidence. Save the exact tool name, error text or code, requested capture scope, and whether the page finished navigation.
- Check each deadline. Inspect navigation and action settings on the browser server, any hosted-service command limit, and the MCP client’s response deadline. Change only the limit that matches the failed stage.
- Shrink the request. Replace full-page capture with viewport or a specific element. If supported, use CSS-pixel scale or a smaller format suitable for the task.
- Check whether the problem is delivery size. Treat an explicit output-size error differently from a tool timeout. Consider file output only when the client can retrieve the file.
- Switch to a snapshot for text. Use an accessibility snapshot for page content and structure; narrow its target or depth if the result is truncated or too large.
- Observe before retrying. If the session remains, inspect the page and retry once with a smaller, read-only capture if needed. Avoid duplicate operations and repeated blanket timeout increases.
Common errors and what to change
| Symptom | Likely layer | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation never completes | Browser navigation or page load | Check the navigation timeout and the page’s actual loading state; do not assume the screenshot size is the cause. |
| Page loads, but screenshot action times out | Action/capture deadline or capture complexity | Check the action timeout, then test a viewport or element capture. |
ToolTimeout from Microsoft’s remote service |
Remote command deadline | Observe the session if it remains available before deciding whether to retry; the documented 3 minutes 30 seconds limit is specific to that service. |
OutputTooLarge from Microsoft’s remote service |
Inline response size | Reduce scope or use a supported smaller format; the service’s documented 768 KiB base64 limit is not universal. |
| Client reports timeout but server error is absent | Client deadline or response delivery | Compare the client call deadline with server settings and check whether the operation may have completed before the client stopped waiting. |
| Text snapshot is truncated | Snapshot output size | Request a narrower target or smaller depth where the implementation supports it. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API uses one GET request to return an image or PDF, and its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents. Before capture, it can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with verdict and billing information in response headers.
For example, use cURL to capture a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and supported parameters. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Playwright MCP timeout values MCP standards?
No. They are documented Playwright MCP defaults and may vary by version or configuration.
Can a screenshot timeout be caused by an image that is too large?
Yes. Some services report an oversized inline response separately from a capture timeout; check the actual error code.
