If your Echo will not enter setup mode, first confirm its exact model, check the connection and Alexa app, and restart it by unplugging it for 30 seconds. Then use the reset procedure for that model: button combinations differ, and a factory reset erases personal information and device and smart-home connections.
Start with the model and basic setup checks
Echo speakers, Echo Dot generations, Echo Show devices, and other Echo models do not all use the same reset procedure. Identify the model before pressing buttons; Amazon’s Echo setup guide links to model information and setup instructions.
- Check the connection. Amazon recommends a strong internet connection. If your setup uses the Alexa app, make sure the app is up to date.
- Restart the Echo. Unplug it for 30 seconds, then reconnect it. Allow it to restart before trying setup again.
- Use the reset for the exact model. If setup or registration still fails, follow the matching instructions below rather than trying button combinations for another Echo.

Choose the reset for your Echo model
Amazon distinguishes a reset that keeps smart-home connections from a factory reset. The first is the less destructive option where it is available. The procedures below apply only to the listed models; follow the linked Amazon page for your device.

Know what the reset will erase
On the listed Echo (3rd/4th generation) and Echo Dot (2nd–5th generation) models, holding Action for 20 seconds is the reset that retains smart-home connections. The separate factory-reset combinations erase personal information as well as device and smart-home connections. The first-generation Echo Dot has its own recessed Reset button procedure; a brief press and an 8-second hold have different outcomes.
Do not choose factory reset casually if you are only trying to get the device into setup mode. If you do need to factory-reset, use the instructions for the exact model and be prepared to set the device up again.

If the Action button still does not respond
The general setup and reset guidance does not establish a universal fix for a physically unresponsive Action button or every failure to enter setup mode. If the restart and the documented reset for your model do not work, use Amazon’s model-specific setup and support route. Avoid repeating resets or guessing at button combinations, especially when the combination could factory-reset the device.
