If your encoder says it is streaming but your YouTube event never goes live, first check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. An incoming preview means YouTube is receiving the feed; no preview points to an encoder-to-YouTube connection problem. If the preview is present but viewers cannot watch, check the event’s publication controls—scheduled streams may still need you to click Go live.
1. Find out whether YouTube is receiving the stream
- Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room while the encoder is running.
- Look for an incoming preview and the stream-health indicator. Note any error message and its timestamp.
- If there is no preview, troubleshoot the feed reaching YouTube: destination URL, stream key, encoder settings, and network.
- If the preview appears but the event is not viewable, check the event’s status and publication controls before changing encoding settings.
An encoder’s “streaming” status only confirms what the encoder reports about its own output; it does not establish that YouTube has published the event. YouTube’s encoder workflow for scheduled events says to wait for the preview and then click Go live. In Live Control Room settings, auto-start and auto-stop can instead let starting and stopping the encoder control the event transition. Confirm which mode is enabled and that the encoder is connected to the intended event. YouTube’s live-stream settings describe these controls.
2. Check the stream URL and key
The server or stream URL identifies where the encoder sends the feed; the stream key is the credential YouTube uses to accept it. In your encoder’s streaming settings, compare both values with those shown for the intended event in Live Control Room.

- Confirm the destination and key belong to the event you are trying to publish, not another scheduled stream.
- If the key may be stale, wrong, or reset, copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not paste it into a public forum, screenshot, or support thread.
YouTube recommends trying a new stream key for certain third-party encoder startup errors. If your software signs in to YouTube instead of using a stream key, YouTube directs users with compatibility problems to that software’s support team; the software may need an update. 3. Use the stream-health message to choose a fix
Read the exact Live Control Room health message before adjusting settings. YouTube’s health indicator provides timestamped errors: red errors are critical and may prevent the event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may reduce quality. Fix the named issue and watch whether the message clears. The error categories include format or codec, bitrate, audio/video stream count or settings, keyframe frequency, resolution, and mismatched primary and backup feeds. Format, codecs, and frame rate
For encoder ingestion over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s current general guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the format named by your health message and the guidance for your chosen mode, rather than assuming every combination is interchangeable. The supported settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s encoder settings provide the current recommendations.
Bitrate and upload capacity
Set bitrate for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected; do not apply a figure intended for another mode. If YouTube reports a bitrate or connection problem, compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the recommended range for that mode. YouTube notes that lowering resolution may help when the connection cannot sustain the selected resolution.

For upload bandwidth, YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the combined stream bitrate. This is an operational recommendation from YouTube Help, not a guarantee against network interruptions. Its encoder settings guidance also notes that network disruptions can break a stream.
Keyframes
YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says it should not exceed four seconds. At 30 frames per second, two seconds corresponds to 60 frames. If your encoder exposes GOP or keyframe settings, check them when the health message identifies a keyframe issue. These are YouTube’s published recommendations; the page does not state a publication year. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Audio, video, and resolution
Follow the error message if it identifies missing or multiple streams, an unsupported audio channel count, interlaced video, or a resolution that does not match the selected ingestion settings. Change the setting named by the error rather than making unrelated adjustments.

Primary and backup feeds
If you send primary and backup feeds, YouTube says their settings must match for failover, including resolution, codecs, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe frequency. A mismatch can prevent the backup from working as intended. Check the health error guide for the relevant mismatch.

If the encoder shows a healthy preview and its local recording looks and sounds correct, investigate the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says a healthy-looking encoder feed can point to an internet issue.
- Check the encoder’s own preview, error log, CPU load, and a local recording if available. If the local output is faulty, address the encoder, source, or computer load first.
- Test upload capacity and compare it with the total bitrate being sent, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- If upload capacity or network stability is inadequate, lower the stream’s demand or contact your internet provider. A wired connection can be a useful test if you suspect Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix an incorrect event, URL, or key.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder preview and local archive and considering another encoder only after those checks do not reveal the fault. Replacing software or hardware is not the first diagnostic step.

5. Troubleshoot RTMPS connection errors separately
Use this branch when the error points to SSL, a connection timeout, or the RTMPS connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS as encrypted ingestion, but the encoder must support it and use the correct server address.
- Copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room; do not assume the ordinary RTMP address is interchangeable.
- Verify that the encoder supports RTMPS and that both the protocol and server are correct.
- For a relevant SSL certificate or timeout error, try port 443 if your encoder allows you to specify a port.

6. Gather useful details if the stream still will not go live
If the checks above do not resolve the issue, preserve the details that can distinguish an ingest problem from an event or encoder problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to report continuing issues.

- The exact stream-health message and timestamp.
- Encoder name and version, relevant logs, and whether its preview and local recording look and sound correct.
- Whether the event is scheduled, its auto-start setting, and whether you clicked Go live after the preview appeared.
- Whether you use RTMP or RTMPS, and the result of an upload test.
- Encoder CPU load, if the local output is unstable.
Never include your stream key in a report, screenshot, or public post.
