Start by opening the exact same URL on your phone and desktop while both are on the same Wi-Fi. Then switch only the phone to cellular data and try again. That comparison helps separate an address or routing problem from DNS, HTTPS certificate trust, browser requests, or the app itself. A page that appears to load can still fail when its API, WebSocket, or another feature tries to connect.
Record what fails before changing anything
“Mobile” can mean a phone on the same Wi-Fi as the desktop or a phone using cellular data; those are different network paths. Note the details below so you can compare attempts accurately.
- The full URL, including
httporhttps, hostname, port, and path. - The phone model, operating system, browser, and whether it is on Wi-Fi, cellular, or a VPN.
- Whether the whole page fails or only a feature such as login, search, media, or live updates.
- The exact browser error, rather than a summary such as “it doesn’t work.”
Change only the phone’s network for the next attempt. If the result changes, routing or name resolution is implicated, but that comparison alone does not identify the setting at fault.
Check whether the address is reachable from the phone
For testing on the same Wi-Fi
If the URL contains localhost, it refers to the device making the request. On the phone, that means the phone—not your server. A private LAN address or local-only hostname usually works only where the phone has a route to the server. For a same-Wi-Fi test, use the server’s reachable LAN address and confirm the service listens on the expected network interface and port, not only on its own loopback interface.

For access over cellular data
A private LAN address generally is not reachable over cellular. You need a route to the server, such as a VPN or secure tunnel, or a deliberately configured public route. Do not expose an app or its admin interface publicly as a blind test: first verify authentication, TLS, firewall scope, and the app’s exposure model.
If the public hostname works only on one network
Compare access from inside the LAN and from cellular. A router’s NAT loopback, also called hairpin NAT, determines whether a device on the home network can use the public address and be routed back inside; router behavior and configuration vary. Google Nest Wifi describes NAT loopback as allowing devices on private Wi-Fi to communicate with a public network, while its port-forwarding guidance explains how outside traffic can be forwarded to a selected home-network device.

Compare DNS answers and routing
Using the same hostname does not guarantee that the phone and desktop connect to the same server. The phone may use a different network resolver, VPN-provided DNS, private DNS profile, browser secure-DNS setting, or local network policy. Cloudflare’s resolver setup instructions show that DNS can be configured at the network level or separately in browsers.
Record the hostname and the destination it resolves to on each device before changing DNS. A local resolver returning a private address may be correct on Wi-Fi but unsuitable on cellular. If you use split DNS, check both the intended records and the routes that are supposed to accompany them.

Check HTTPS and certificate trust
Capture the complete TLS or browser error. Check that the certificate is active, valid for the exact hostname in the URL, and served with the required certificate chain. Cloudflare’s TLS troubleshooting guide covers certificate activation, hostname coverage, cipher compatibility, and network interference as possible considerations for handshake errors, and recommends trying another network and collecting the precise browser error.
Android’s network security guidance identifies an unknown certificate authority, a self-signed certificate, and a missing intermediate certificate as possible causes of TLS failures. It advises against disabling certificate validation; configure trust appropriately instead.

For controlled iOS testing, Apple’s archived QA1948 recommends using a test certificate authority. A root certificate installed on an iPhone or iPad must also be explicitly enabled at Settings > General > About > Certificate Trust Settings. For ordinary use, a publicly trusted certificate configured for the app’s hostname is usually simpler and safer than distributing a private root certificate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If the page loads, inspect the request that fails
The initial HTML loading does not prove that the rest of the app can connect. If one feature fails, identify the corresponding API, fetch, WebSocket, image, or embedded-service request rather than treating the whole site as unreachable.

- Check whether an API hostname resolves to the wrong address or redirects somewhere the phone cannot reach.
- Look for a request to
localhostor a private IP that is unavailable on the phone’s current network. - Check whether an HTTPS page tries to open a WebSocket with
ws://, or whether the browser reports mixed-content or CORS blocking. - If the request targets a local or loopback network address, check the browser’s console message and permission behavior.
Local Network Access work describes browser permission controls for websites connecting to local and loopback targets; MDN’s reference explains address-space classification and related policy behavior. These details depend on browser version and request context, so use them as a hypothesis to check against the actual failed request and console message.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capture a trace and compare it with the working desktop
Compare the mobile and desktop attempts at the first point where their requests differ: name resolution, connection, TLS, redirect, or application response. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guide describes remote inspection of Android Chrome through USB debugging and chrome://inspect/#devices, and links to instructions for generating an iPhone HAR. Desktop browser developer tools can capture failed requests and export a HAR when appropriate.
Quick Recap
- Record the timestamp, exact URL, phone network, browser and operating-system versions, and complete error text.
- Capture the failed request or page load in the browser’s developer tools or remote inspector.
- Compare it with a successful desktop request to find the first divergence.
- Remove credentials, cookies, tokens, and private response data before sharing logs or a HAR file.
Use the symptoms to choose the next check
| What you observe | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| Phone fails on cellular but works on the same Wi-Fi as the desktop | Private addressing, VPN or secure-tunnel routing, DNS differences, firewall policy, public-route configuration, and whether the URL points to a LAN address. |
| Phone fails on Wi-Fi while the desktop works on that Wi-Fi | Exact browser error, phone-specific DNS or VPN settings, certificate hostname and trust chain, and the phone’s failed requests. |
| Public hostname works on cellular but fails from inside the home network | Router NAT loopback or hairpin NAT behavior; compare the public hostname with the intended LAN route. |
| Main page appears, but a feature does not work | The specific API, WebSocket, media, or embedded request, including its hostname, protocol, redirect, and browser console error. |
| Changing networks changes the error | Routing or name resolution first; record the results on both networks before altering configuration. |
