Start by identifying the exact Mustang and describing when the gear-selection problem happens. A manual Mustang that resists shifting with the engine running, resists even with the engine off, selects a gear but does not move normally, or has trouble with only one gear may need very different diagnosis. Do not force the shifter or keep driving if the car cannot be controlled normally.
Record the symptom before troubleshooting
“Won’t go into gear” is not specific enough to identify a failed part. Before contacting a repair shop or looking up a procedure, note the Mustang’s model year, engine, transmission, market, and any relevant modifications. Then describe what happens as precisely as possible:
- Does the lever resist selection with the engine off, with it running, or in both situations?
- Does the problem affect every gear or just one?
- Does the lever select a gear, but the car fail to move or behave normally?
- Has the clutch pedal’s feel changed, or does it make a noise?
These observations help communicate the fault; on their own, they do not confirm a diagnosis. Ford provides owner-manual entries for multiple Mustang model years, so use the manual that matches the car’s year and market. Why the clutch can matter during gear selection
The clutch engages and disengages engine power from the transmission during shifting. Ford’s glossary explains that depressing the clutch pedal interrupts power flow to the transmission or transaxle. That makes the clutch system relevant to a gear-selection complaint, but it does not establish that the clutch—or any particular component—has failed. A difference between engine-off and engine-running behavior, or a change in pedal feel, is useful information to report to a technician, not a stand-alone test result.

Do not assume every Mustang has the same clutch setup
Parts and procedures depend on the specific year and configuration. Ford Performance’s clutch-quadrant instructions cover 1982–2003 Mustang applications and describe a cable connecting to the clutch fork, with a plastic quadrant above the accelerator pedal. Those instructions apply to a specific product and application; they are not a general no-gear diagnostic procedure and do not establish that later Mustangs use the same arrangement. Check the matching Ford information before identifying a part or attempting a repair.
When inspection or repair requires professional service
If diagnosing the complaint requires removing covers, lifting the car, or opening the clutch or transmission assembly, use the correct workshop procedure or have a qualified technician inspect it. Ford Performance recommends a hoist for the installation covered by its instructions and warns that jack stands must be seated firmly on a level surface. Do not treat those product-installation directions as a universal repair sequence.

Do not replace the transmission based on the symptom alone
Ford’s catalog lists manual transmission assemblies, including listings associated with 5.0L and 2.3L six-speed descriptions, but a catalog listing does not establish fitment for a particular Mustang or prove that the transmission is the cause. Before considering an assembly replacement, get a diagnosis, verify fitment against the car’s VIN and configuration, and obtain a repair estimate. A specialized possibility such as bellhousing and crankshaft centerline misalignment can be associated with gear wear, jumping out of gear, vibration, bearing noise, or excessive clutch spin time; it is not a default explanation for every gear-selection complaint.
