To cut a section from a video in VLC on Windows, turn on View > Advanced Controls, play or seek to the clip’s start, click Record, then click Record again at the end. VLC saves the recorded playback as a separate file. This is a quick way to extract one rough segment, not a precise timeline-editing workflow.
Cut a video segment in VLC
- Install VLC if needed. Download it from VideoLAN’s official Windows download page. The page lists the current Windows installers; check it for the latest version rather than relying on a version number that may change.
- Open the video in VLC.
- Show the Record button. Select View > Advanced Controls. VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop documentation says this displays an advanced toolbar above the playback controls, including Record.
- Go to the segment’s start. Play or seek through the video to the point where you want the clip to begin. You can use frame-by-frame movement to help position playback, but that does not establish frame-accurate export boundaries.
- Start recording. Click the red Record button. VLC begins recording the content currently playing.
- Stop at the segment’s end. Click Record again. VideoLAN documents the button as starting and stopping a recording.
- Find and check the saved file. Open it in VLC and verify the beginning, ending, picture, and sound before deleting or replacing the source video.
Choose where VLC saves recordings
VLC saves recordings to the computer’s default folder for videos or music. The exact folder can depend on Windows configuration and the VLC build, so check the preference rather than assuming a particular path.
- Open Tools > Preferences, or press Ctrl+P.
- Go to Input/Codecs > Files.
- Check or change the recording destination, then save the preference.
VideoLAN describes this setting in its documentation for recording what you are playing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat this VLC method can—and cannot—do
The Record control captures audio or video content VLC is playing. It records the playback interval you choose, so it is useful for making a quick extract without opening a separate editor. The available documentation does not guarantee frame-accurate start and end points, preservation of every stream, a uniform output extension, or the same output behavior for every codec and VLC version. Review the resulting file for your particular video.

VLC also documents a separate workflow for recording video or capturing a desktop or webcam, with an output profile and destination for capture jobs. That is not the same as recording a segment from a video already playing. See VideoLAN’s How to Record Video instructions for that other workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to use a dedicated video editor instead
Use VLC’s Record method when you need one straightforward playback-based extract and can check the result afterward. Choose a dedicated editor if the job depends on exact in and out points, several cuts, rearranging clips, titles, transitions, or a repeatable non-destructive timeline. VLC’s documented playback-recording workflow does not provide those timeline-editing steps.
