Trigger visual regression tests from your CI pipeline when a pull request is opened or updated, and on pushes to the branches that need coverage. A reliable job checks out the change, installs dependencies and the expected browser runtime, runs the visual suite, and makes its report or review result available to the team.
Choose which changes trigger the tests
For feedback before a change is merged, run the checks on pull requests. Add a push trigger for branches where direct pushes or post-merge runs matter. Playwright’s CI example uses both push and pull_request and filters them to main and master; adapt those filters to your repository’s branch policy. See the Playwright CI documentation.
Here is a GitHub Actions workflow based on that pattern. It assumes a Node project with Playwright Test configured and a test script available through npx playwright test. Replace the branch names if your repository uses different branches.
name: Visual regression tests
on:
push:
branches: [main, master]
pull_request:
branches: [main, master]
jobs:
visual-tests:
timeout-minutes: 60
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- uses: actions/setup-node@v4
with:
node-version: lts/*
- name: Install dependencies
run: npm ci
- name: Install Playwright browsers
run: npx playwright install --with-deps
- name: Run tests
run: npx playwright test
- name: Upload HTML report
if: always()
uses: actions/upload-artifact@v4
with:
name: playwright-report
path: playwright-report/
retention-days: 30
The workflow runs on pushes and pull requests targeting the listed branches. The browser-install command installs browser binaries and operating-system dependencies on the runner; the report upload runs even when tests fail, so reviewers can inspect the failure output. Confirm action versions, Node version, and report configuration against your project before adopting the example.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make the browser environment reproducible
Screenshot comparisons are sensitive to the environment in which a page is rendered. Install the project’s dependencies and the browser binaries expected by the test configuration. A container can help keep the browser environment consistent across CI runs and operating systems; Playwright discusses container use in its CI guidance.
- Use the project’s lockfile-based install command where available, such as
npm cifor an npm project. - Install the browser runtime and operating-system dependencies required by the selected runner.
- Keep browser and dependency versions aligned with local development and the CI configuration.
Run the suite and make its result actionable
For Playwright Test, npx playwright test runs the configured test suite. The exact command depends on the runner and project configuration. Make sure visual assertions are part of the invoked suite; merely launching browser tests does not create a visual baseline workflow by itself.

Publish a report artifact or connect a visual review workflow that presents changes in the pull request. Playwright’s CI example uploads an HTML report. Chromatic documents CI automation and pull-request feedback, including a CI guide, GitHub Actions setup, and a Playwright integration guide.
Choose full-suite or selective execution
Running the full visual suite on each relevant change gives broad coverage but can increase CI time. Playwright’s --only-changed option analyzes the test-suite dependency graph to select tests likely affected by a changeset. The documentation describes this as a heuristic that can miss tests, so it is best treated as an early-feedback optimization rather than proof that every affected page was checked. When complete coverage matters, follow a selective pass with the full suite. Details are in the Playwright CI documentation.

Decide how visual changes affect merging
A detected difference does not always mean a defect: teams need a review policy for deciding whether to accept a new baseline, fix an unintended change, or block the merge pending review. Percy’s Playwright client documents an optional reporter gate that fails on changes; confirm its current behavior and configuration in the percy-playwright documentation. Chromatic documents pull-request visual review workflows in its CI documentation.
- Use a report artifact when the team reviews test output separately from the merge status.
- Use a visual review workflow when reviewers need to inspect and approve captured changes in the pull request.
- Enable a failing gate only when the team has a clear process for reviewing and updating intended visual changes.
Troubleshoot common CI failures
Tests fail to launch a browser
Check that the workflow installs the browser binaries and operating-system dependencies required by the project. Verify the runner environment and Playwright version match the test setup.

Visual output varies between local and CI runs
Compare browser versions and runtime environments. Use a consistent container or otherwise align the CI browser environment with the one used to create and review baselines.
The report is missing after a failed run
Check that the report directory is configured and that the upload step runs after failures. In the example, if: always() allows artifact upload even when the test command fails.

Selective execution misses a relevant test
Because changed-test selection is heuristic, run the full suite when complete visual coverage is required rather than treating the selective result as exhaustive.
A visual difference blocks a pull request unexpectedly
Review whether the difference is an intended change and whether the configured gate matches your review policy. Percy documents an optional gate; confirm the integration’s current settings before relying on it.

If the task is capturing a page rather than maintaining an in-repository baseline suite, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns an image or PDF; for example, save a WebP capture of a target page with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should visual regression tests run on every push or only pull requests?
Use pull-request runs for pre-merge feedback, and add push runs for branches where direct-push or post-merge coverage is needed.
Does Playwright’s –only-changed option guarantee full visual coverage?
No. Playwright documents it as a dependency-graph heuristic that can miss tests; use a full run when complete coverage matters.
