To translate a book with Claude Code or Codex, prepare a structured source file, divide it into coherent sections, establish a shared glossary and style guide, translate with enough surrounding context, then check every section against the original before merging and exporting. You can work sequentially, chapter by chapter, or in parallel batches; neither approach is established as more accurate, so plan on a separate bilingual review either way.
What the pipeline needs to do
A book-length job is more than a series of prompts. The workflow must preserve the book’s structure, keep terminology and names consistent, recover cleanly when a section changes, and make it possible to find missing or altered content. Claude Code and Codex can serve as agents in that workflow, but the documented implementations are workflow examples, not controlled evaluations of translation quality.
Think of the process as seven stages: prepare the source, split and track it, define editorial rules, translate, carry context across sections, validate the files, and review the translation against the original.
How to prepare the book
Use EPUB when it is available
For a book available as EPUB, a chapter-by-chapter Codex workflow recommends using that as the primary source because its structure can be more useful than a page-based file. Preserve chapter and section boundaries, headings, notes, tables, and other meaningful elements as you convert or extract the text.

Preprocess PDF-only or scanned books
A PDF may contain selectable text, page layout, or scanned images rather than clean text. For PDF-only or scanned material, the documented workflows recommend extracting or converting the content to Markdown and dividing it into translation units before translating. Check the extraction for missing text, broken reading order, tables, footnotes, and figure captions; a successful conversion does not establish that the source was captured correctly.
Anthropic’s PDF documentation describes a process that provides Claude with extracted page text alongside a page image, allowing it to consider textual and visual elements. It also recommends splitting large PDFs when needed. That can help with layout-dependent material, but it is not a guarantee of correct extraction or translation. The parallel workflow also documents a Calibre conversion route for PDF, DOCX, and EPUB, as well as an input route for Markdown that has already been extracted.

How to organize translation units
Split the source along meaningful boundaries—usually chapters or coherent sections—rather than making arbitrary fragments. Smaller units are easier to assign, inspect, and redo, but each split can remove context the translator needs to resolve a pronoun, a reference, or a term introduced earlier.
For a resumable parallel workflow, Rainman Translate Book documents numbered Markdown chunks and a manifest that tracks their hashes. Treat the manifest as a record of which source chunks correspond to which outputs, not as an editorial quality score. Keep the source, chunks, translated files, glossary, and style guide in an organized project so edits and re-runs can be traced.

How to maintain terminology and voice
Before translating at scale, create a glossary and a short style guide. Include decisions that recur across chapters, such as character and place names, technical terms, preferred spellings, forms of address, units, and the intended register. Add entries as new terms appear, and record choices rather than relying on the agent to infer them consistently.
The chapter-by-chapter Codex workflow recommends maintaining a rolling glossary and revisiting earlier chapters when terminology settles. Rainman Translate Book describes glossary-sensitive state, high-frequency entity tracking, alias and spelling-drift handling, and selective reruns when glossary or source data changes. These are practical controls for consistency, not proof that every instance has been translated appropriately.

Should you translate sequentially or in parallel?
These are two documented process designs, not quality rankings. Choose according to how you want to manage context, review, and recovery—not on an assumption that batching is faster or that sequential work is more accurate.
| Consideration | Parallel chunk pipeline | Chapter-by-chapter agent workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Organization | Separate chunks are translated in concurrent batches. | One chapter or coherent section is handled at a time. |
| Context and consistency | Can use shared glossary and state, entity handling, and excerpts from neighboring chunks. | Can keep decisions in the chapter workflow and update a rolling glossary as the work progresses. |
| Recovery after changes | Chunk-level resume and selective retranslation are documented. | Earlier sections can be revised as glossary choices settle. |
| Editorial trade-off | Useful to assess when batching and recovery matter, provided separate editorial review is budgeted; this is an inference from the design. | Useful to assess when the operator wants chapter-level control and is prepared to work through the text in sequence; this is an inference from the design. |
| Quality evidence | Integrity checks are documented, but full-book organic validation is identified as future work by the project. | Manual process guidance is documented, but not a controlled quality evaluation. |
Rainman Translate Book’s current README documents eight concurrent agents by default. That is a project setting, not a general Claude Code or Codex limit, and a mutable default rather than a guarantee about the configuration you will use.

A practical end-to-end workflow
- Choose and inspect the source. Prefer EPUB when available for the chapter-by-chapter approach; otherwise extract or convert the PDF or DOCX, paying particular attention to scanned pages and layout-sensitive content.
- Preserve structure and create units. Keep chapter boundaries and meaningful elements. For a resumable parallel process, make numbered chunks and maintain a manifest linking each source unit to its output.
- Write the glossary and style guide. Set rules for names, recurring terms, spelling, register, units, notes, and formatting. Continue updating the glossary as the translation reveals new choices.
- Select a working pattern. Translate chapters or coherent sections one at a time when you want close sequential control; use isolated chunks and concurrent batches when batching and chunk-level recovery suit the project.
- Supply the needed context. Give each unit the shared editorial rules and enough nearby material to resolve references across boundaries. Rainman documents short, read-only excerpts from neighboring chunks for this purpose.
- Track changes and rerun affected work. In a manifest-based process, check the recorded source hashes and use selective reruns when source material or glossary decisions change. Review any surrounding sections affected by a revised term or passage.
- Validate and merge. Check that every source unit has exactly one corresponding output, that the manifest and source hashes are current, and that the merged file follows the original structure. Then export to the required format.
- Review against the original. Compare the translation with the source for omissions, additions, terminology, figures, notes, tables, quotations, and layout-sensitive material before treating it as a deliverable.
What file checks can—and cannot—tell you
Hash checks can reveal that a tracked source chunk has changed, and one-to-one correspondence checks can reveal missing or duplicated output units. Those checks protect file integrity and make a workflow easier to resume. They do not establish that a sentence is complete, that a technical term is right, or that the target-language prose is natural. Rainman Translate Book documents merging and output generation for HTML, DOCX, EPUB, and PDF, while identifying full-book organic validation as future work.
Use a separate bilingual review for meaning, omissions, terminology, notes, tables, and passages where layout affects interpretation. A mechanically complete book can still contain semantic errors or awkward prose.
What Codex and Claude documentation supports
OpenAI describes Codex CLI as a terminal tool for inspecting, editing, and running code, with choices including models, reasoning effort, permissions, and commands. That supports using Codex as a workflow and file-processing agent; it does not establish its performance on book translation.
Anthropic’s PDF documentation explains how Claude can receive extracted text alongside page images and advises splitting large PDFs when needed. This is relevant when the source depends on visual layout, but it does not guarantee that the content was extracted or translated correctly. The workflow examples likewise document capabilities and process choices, not comparative accuracy, publication readiness, or savings.

Example starting prompts
The project instructions include simple request forms such as “Translate /path/to/book.pdf into Chinese” and “translate /path/to/book.pdf to Japanese.” For a real project, specify the source and target languages, the intended audience and register, the output structure, and where the glossary and style rules are maintained. Treat the prompt as an entry point to the workflow, not a substitute for preparing, tracking, and reviewing the manuscript.
