In most cases, you do not manually transfer an Xbox save when you buy the same game you played through Game Pass. Sign in with the Xbox account that created the save, connect to Xbox network, and let the game sync. This normally works when the game identity is the same and the save has synced successfully; it is not a guarantee across every edition or platform.
What happens to your save when you buy the game?
For the same Xbox game on an Xbox console, moving from Game Pass access to a purchased copy is generally an access change, not a separate save-file transfer. Xbox saves roam through the network for games that use the same TitleID across Xbox devices and console generations, provided you are signed in to Xbox network. Microsoft describes these requirements in its Game Development Kit save-and-roaming documentation.
Your progress is associated with the Xbox profile and game save, rather than being a file you usually need to copy yourself. The result depends on using the same account and game identity and having a successful sync. A different edition or a separate platform version may not use the same save.

- Check the game and account. Confirm that the purchased game is the same title you played and that you can sign in to the Xbox profile that created the save.
- Sync from the source device. Connect the Xbox console or cloud gaming session to Xbox network. Close the game normally and allow any save synchronization to finish. Playing offline can leave local and cloud saves out of date; Microsoft Support guidance reproduced in Microsoft Q&A explains that data is stored on the console or app and in the cloud, with network access keeping it synchronized.
- Launch on the target Xbox. On the console where you bought or installed the game, sign in to the same Xbox account, connect online, and launch the same title. Wait for synchronization to finish before continuing your game.
- Handle a save-choice prompt carefully. If the game asks which saved data to use, stop and check which copy has your latest progress before choosing. Microsoft’s certification guidance treats a save going unrecognized and then being overwritten without user interaction as a failure case.
What changes if you played through Cloud Gaming?
If you played the Xbox version through Cloud Gaming and then install that same Xbox game, the expected route is still Xbox save synchronization: use the same account and connect to Xbox network. Microsoft Q&A discusses this cloud-gaming-to-download scenario, but the behavior of an individual title can differ, so confirm its support information if the save does not appear.

Can you move an Xbox save to a Windows PC?
Only when the game supports the relevant cross-platform save path. Microsoft’s GDK requires Xbox-to-Windows save roaming for Xbox Play Anywhere games. For other Xbox/Windows game pairs, roaming is recommended but not required; a console save may therefore not be recognized by the PC edition. Check the game’s Play Anywhere designation or the publisher’s current save or cross-progression documentation before relying on continuity.

What if the save is missing or the game shows a conflict?
- Make sure you are signed in to the Xbox profile that played the game.
- Reconnect to Xbox network and give synchronization time to complete, especially if you recently played offline.
- If prompted to choose between local and cloud data, do not select blindly. Determine which copy has the newest progress before allowing one to replace the other.
- If the save still does not appear, avoid deleting local or cloud data or repeatedly launching the game and creating a new save. Consult the game’s support steps; recovery differs by title and platform.
