As of October 4, 2026, a Steam-to-GOG save transfer for OCTOPATH TRAVELER is not yet confirmed. GOG lists the Windows game as coming soon, with release reporting it is scheduled for October 8, 2026. Steam’s Windows save location is known, but GOG’s save folder and whether its build accepts Steam save files have not been established. You can back up your Steam files now; wait until the GOG version is available to test a copy safely.

How do I transfer my Octopath Traveler save from Steam to GOG?

There is no verified end-to-end transfer procedure yet. The cautious approach is to preserve the complete Steam save folder, let the GOG game create its own files after release, and test with copies rather than replacing your only saves. The Steam folder below is documented for the Windows build; the GOG destination must be located on your own system after installing and launching that version.

  1. Close the game and let Steam finish syncing. Do not change save files while OCTOPATH TRAVELER is running or while a Steam cloud sync is pending.
  2. Back up the entire Steam save folder. Copy the complete SaveGames folder to a separate location. Keep SystemData.sav and every SaveData*.sav file together, and do not edit your only copy.
  3. After GOG releases the game, launch it once and exit normally. If necessary, make a disposable new save so the game creates its own save folder. This is cautious file-handling advice, not a confirmed game-specific requirement.
  4. Find the folder created by the GOG version. Do not assume it uses Steam’s path or borrow a folder path from another game. Preserve a copy of the GOG-created files before testing.
  5. Test using copies of the Steam files. Put copies in the GOG-created folder only after preserving its original contents. Start the GOG game and check that the expected party and progress appear before changing or syncing any other saves.
  6. Handle any cloud conflict carefully. Pause and compare local and cloud copies before choosing one. If the game fails to recognize the save, restore the GOG backup and avoid repeatedly overwriting files while waiting for title-specific compatibility guidance.

This procedure reduces the chance of losing progress; it does not prove that the GOG build will load Steam’s save format.

{64BitSteamID} represents your Steam account’s numeric ID. Steam’s title configuration identifies SystemData.sav and files matching SaveData*.sav. Back up the whole folder, not just one numbered save. If the path is missing, check the actual Windows Documents location: Documents can be redirected or customized.

Will the GOG version recognize my Steam save?

That remains unknown before the GOG release. The GOG product listing identifies the Windows version as coming soon, and release reporting gives October 8, 2026 as the scheduled date. Neither establishes the GOG save path or confirms that GOG’s game accepts Steam’s .sav files. See GOG’s product listing and RPG Site’s October 2, 2026 release report.

After launch, a successful test means the GOG game itself loads the copied save and shows your expected progress. Merely seeing the files in a folder, or seeing cloud-save support on the product page, is not evidence of compatibility.

Do Steam Cloud and GOG Galaxy transfer saves between stores?

Cross-store synchronization is not established. Steam Cloud and GOG Galaxy each have cloud-save features, but the available product information does not say that they synchronize a save directly with each other. GOG says, “GOG Galaxy is used for synchronization of achievements and cloud saves, but its usage is totally optional.” That makes Galaxy optional for playing the GOG edition; it does not confirm interoperability with Steam Cloud. GOG also lists an offline installer, but an offline installation does not change the unconfirmed save compatibility.

Steam says matching changed files can sync before and after game sessions, and warns that ignoring a cloud conflict can leave cloud and local files in conflict and risk lost progress. It also provides a per-game cloud-sync setting in the game’s properties. See Steamworks’ Steam Cloud documentation and GOG’s product FAQ and features. If you disable Steam sync to protect a chosen copy during troubleshooting, do so only after backing up; re-enable it only when you have confirmed which save is correct.

Which transfer approach is safer?

Approach What is established Main risk Has the destination loaded the save?
Manual local copy Steam’s Windows source folder and file patterns are documented; the GOG destination path and compatibility are not. Overwriting GOG-created files or the wrong local save. Not confirmed before release; verify in the GOG game using copies.
Storefront cloud sync Steam Cloud and GOG Galaxy each support cloud-save features; direct cross-store sync is not documented. A cloud conflict can replace or obscure the desired local or cloud copy. No evidence establishes that either service transfers this save to the other.

These are not two confirmed working transfer methods: manual copying is only a cautious test plan, while automatic Steam-to-GOG cloud transfer remains unverified.

Sources and platform scope

The confirmed source-folder instructions apply to the Steam Windows configuration. GOG’s listing supports Windows, but the evidence available before its scheduled release does not establish a GOG save location or import behavior. Steam lists Square Enix as the publisher and Steam Cloud as a feature; neither fact confirms support for cross-store migration.
