To copy a large video file from your phone to a VPS in India, connect to the server with SFTP over SSH and upload the file to the intended directory. Before you begin, confirm the VPS hostname or IP, SSH port, username, authentication method, available disk space and transfer limits. Copying a file onto a VPS is different from uploading or publishing a video on YouTube: choose the destination that matches your goal.
Choose the right transfer method
| Method | Destination | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SFTP/SSH from your phone | VPS filesystem | Direct transfer over encrypted SSH transport | Resume behavior, phone file access and background operation depend on the client and device. |
| Resumable object-storage upload, then copy to the VPS | Cloud bucket, then VPS | Google Cloud Storage supports resumable uploads, which can continue after communication failures. | Adds a storage account, permissions, a staging step and potentially storage or transfer charges. |
| YouTube Data API resumable upload | YouTube | Can resume an interrupted video publishing upload. | It uploads to YouTube, not to the VPS filesystem. |
For a straightforward phone-to-server copy, start with SFTP. If your mobile connection is unreliable and your phone can upload to a cloud bucket, resumable object storage is an alternative staging route. Google documents resumable uploads for large files and slow connections; an upload session can remain active for up to one week. Google Cloud Storage resumable uploads.
Prepare the VPS and phone
Confirm server access and capacity
Get the connection details from your VPS provider or administrator. The SFTP port may differ from the default, so use the port configured for your server. Check the target directory, free disk space and any provider bandwidth or file-size limits before starting. These checks help avoid a failed transfer caused by a wrong endpoint, a full disk or a policy restriction. See the provider guidance on SFTP setup and transfer.
- Hostname or IP address
- SSH/SFTP port
- Username and password or SSH-key authentication details
- Remote directory where the file should be stored
- Available VPS disk space and provider transfer limits
Locate the recording on Android
Open the SFTP app’s file picker and select the actual video file. If you use a terminal, do not assume it can read every folder used by another app: Android storage permissions and app-specific directories can limit visibility. If the file is not visible, use a file picker that can access it or copy it into a location shared with the transfer app. Android’s storage rules are described in the Android storage documentation.

On Android, Termux is another option if you want a command-line workflow. Its project describes it as an Android terminal and Linux environment, with access to remote servers using OpenSSH; it also lists rsync among available tools. See Termux.
Upload directly with SFTP
- Install or open an SFTP-capable client. Use a client that supports SFTP over SSH, not an unencrypted file-transfer protocol.
- Create a server connection. Enter the VPS hostname or IP, the port supplied for your server, username and authentication method. Verify the host identity if the client displays an SSH host-key prompt; do not accept an unexpected key change without checking with your provider or administrator.
- Open the destination directory. Navigate to the remote folder where the video belongs. Confirm you have permission to write there and enough free space.
- Select the phone file and start the upload. Use the app’s file picker to choose the video, then monitor progress. Keep the phone powered and on reliable Wi-Fi during a long transfer. A VPS provider’s Android guidance recommends stable Wi-Fi, checking free server storage and avoiding aggressive app sleep; these are practical recommendations, not guarantees for every phone or client. Hostinger’s Android SFTP guidance.
- Verify the uploaded file. Compare the remote file size with the phone’s local file size. Where practical, calculate a cryptographic hash on both devices and compare the results. Hashing is an optional integrity check; available commands and GUI options vary by phone and client.
Command-line option with OpenSSH
OpenSSH’s sftp supports uploading with put. For example, after connecting, you can run put /path/to/video.mp4 to upload that local file to the current remote directory. The exact local path depends on how your Android terminal can access shared storage. OpenSSH’s -a option attempts to resume a partial transfer, but it assumes the partial remote file matches the local file; using it against a different file can corrupt the result. Read the OpenSSH sftp manual before relying on resume behavior.

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
Use cloud storage as a resumable staging step
If a direct SFTP transfer repeatedly fails and your phone can upload to a bucket, stage the file in Google Cloud Storage and then copy it from the bucket to the VPS. Google Cloud’s CLI can manage resumable uploads automatically, and its documentation covers integrity checks for completed large uploads. This adds another account and transfer leg; review the bucket’s permissions, storage charges and any cloud-to-VPS transfer or egress charges for your setup rather than assuming the route is free.
Treat a resumable upload session URI as sensitive: Google says it acts as an authentication token. Keep it private and transmit it only over HTTPS. Details are in Google’s resumable upload documentation.

If your goal is to publish the video on YouTube
Use YouTube’s upload workflow, not SFTP, if the desired destination is your YouTube channel. The YouTube Data API resumable protocol starts an upload session, returns a session URI, accepts the video bytes and lets a client check the server-reported range to resume after an interruption. Google identifies large files and unstable or mobile-originating connections as suitable cases. This procedure publishes to YouTube; it does not put the file on your VPS. See YouTube’s resumable upload protocol.
Choose an India VPS for the file you need to store
Check the provider’s stated region, usable disk space, transfer policy, server access method and budget. A provider’s own description of an India VPS as a file server or S3-compatible object store, or its mention of rsync, rclone or Restic over SSH, is not independent evidence that a particular provider, city or route is fastest or best value. Verify the location and limits for the exact VPS plan you intend to use; no transfer speed, provider price or data-residency guarantee can be assumed from the file-transfer method alone.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems
The client cannot connect
- Check that the hostname or IP, port and username match the server details. Do not assume the default SSH port; the VPS may use a different configured port.
- Confirm the VPS is running and that its firewall or provider network rules allow SSH connections from your current network.
- If key authentication fails, check that the correct private key is selected and that the matching public key is authorized on the server. Do not send private keys to anyone.
The file is missing from the phone picker
The transfer app may not have permission to read the folder, or Android may restrict access to another app’s private storage. Select the recording through an appropriate system file picker or copy it to shared storage that the client can access.
The upload stops or cannot continue
- Keep the phone on stable Wi-Fi, powered, and exempt the transfer app from aggressive battery or background restrictions where your Android version allows it.
- Check server disk space and the provider’s transfer limits before retrying.
- Use the client’s resume option only when it supports it and the remote partial file is from the same local file. OpenSSH’s resume attempt relies on that same-file assumption.
- If interruptions persist, consider a resumable cloud upload as a staging step; the phone’s app must support uploading to the bucket.
The upload completes but the remote file seems wrong
Compare local and remote file sizes first. For stronger verification, compare cryptographic hashes calculated independently on each side. If the size or hash differs, upload again to a new remote filename rather than overwriting a known-good file until the replacement is verified.
