What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To transfer a file through a web agent, use the file-transfer mechanism provided by the agent’s runtime—not just its ability to click around a website. First identify where the file is stored and which environment can read it; then use that environment’s documented upload or download route, limit access to the intended files, and verify the result.
What “file transfer with a web agent” means
A web agent can interact with a page, but that does not automatically let it read files on your computer or save downloads there. File bytes have to pass through an environment that can access them: for example, an executor-visible path, a staged document ID, a provider file API, a mounted filesystem, or a remote browser’s upload/download handler. The right procedure depends on the agent and browser architecture.
Before starting, identify both ends of the transfer: where the source file is, and where the downloaded or generated file should end up. A local browser, hosted agent session, remote browser service, and remote-access portal can have different file stores, permissions, and controls.
Choose the transfer route for your environment
| Environment or mechanism | Upload route | Download route | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent executor or application environment | Use a documented executor-readable path or application-defined document ID. | Save to the supported local or mounted filesystem location. | Confirm the executor can read the source and that the destination is the expected one. Restrict readable paths to approved task files. Claude browser-use documentation |
| Hosted agent environment | Supply files at session creation or use the provider’s file API, if available. | Retrieve session artifacts through the provider’s artifact mechanism or file API. | Check authentication, size limits, and artifact lifetime in the provider’s current documentation. OpenAI documents distinct limits for inline uploads, files copied from its Files API, and published artifacts. OpenAI Files and artifacts |
| Remote browser service | Transfer a file to the remote browser’s HTML file input using the service’s documented upload method. | Use its download handler to capture a completed browser download and return it to your application. | Confirm the service’s authentication and size cap. Browserless documents a combined decoded upload cap of 50 MB for its described upload operation. Browserless file downloads |
| Remote access portal | Use the portal’s policy-controlled transfer feature, when enabled. | Use the portal’s corresponding download workflow. | Transfers may be disabled by user or administrator policy; check the product’s instructions for the specific SSH, VNC, or RDP session. Palo Alto Networks Secure Agentless Access |
These routes are not interchangeable. Do not assume that a browser upload method works in a hosted agent, or that a hosted artifact API can retrieve a file from a remote browser.

Upload a file safely
- Confirm the runtime and source location. Check whether the agent’s executor, provider file store, mounted filesystem, or remote browser can access the file. If the source is only on your computer, use a supported staging or transfer feature rather than giving the agent an assumed local path.
- Use the runtime’s documented upload mechanism. This may be a readable path, a staged document ID, a provider file API, a session-creation upload, or a remote browser file-input operation. Follow the documentation for the actual environment.
- Limit which files the agent can select. For path-based uploads, resolve path traversal and symlinks, and restrict accepted paths to a dedicated allowlisted upload directory. Keep download storage separate from upload-eligible files. The Claude browser-use documentation warns that manipulated page content could influence an agent’s upload choice and expose unrelated files.
- Interact with the intended website control. Locate the correct file input, provide only the approved file using the supported tool method, and submit the intended form or action. Selecting a file is not necessarily the same as submitting it.
- Verify the site accepted it. Check for the website’s success message, resulting record, or other task-specific confirmation. Do not treat a tool call that returned without an error as proof the site processed the file.
Download a file produced by a website or agent
- Determine whether the output will be a browser download, a hosted session artifact, a file in a mounted directory, or a provider-file object.
- Use the matching download handler, artifact retrieval flow, provider API, or filesystem path. For a remote browser, the service may need to capture the completed download and stream it back; for hosted environments, retrieve the artifact through the provider’s supported mechanism.
- Save the result to a destination that is not available as an upload input unless the task explicitly requires it.
- Check that the file exists at the expected destination, opens correctly, and is the expected file. Confirm its size or other relevant properties if the transfer matters.
Limits vary by product and operation. OpenAI’s Files and artifacts documentation lists 5 MiB per inline file and 10 MiB total for inline uploads at session creation, 50 MiB per file copied from its Files API, 200 MiB per published artifact, and 500 MiB total output published together. These are distinct documented limits, not one universal cap. Check the current provider documentation for retention and lifetime rules as well as size.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The agent cannot find or open the source file. | The path is on your computer, but the agent’s executor or remote browser cannot read it. | Stage the file through the runtime’s supported file API, session upload, mounted directory, or remote-browser upload operation. |
| The file is selected, but the website shows no upload. | The tool filled the file input but did not submit the form, or the site requires another confirmation step. | Complete the site’s intended submission action and check for its success response. |
| An upload is rejected or stops partway. | The file may exceed a per-file or combined size limit, or the service may require authentication. | Check the specific operation’s current size and authentication requirements; do not assume another API’s limits apply. |
| A download completes in the browser but is missing locally. | The remote environment saved it in its own storage rather than on your machine. | Retrieve it through the remote browser’s download handler, hosted artifact API, provider file API, or mounted filesystem, as applicable. |
| A legacy automation recipe fails in a current browser setup. | The instructions may rely on a retired or unsupported browser action. | Check the action’s current support. Microsoft says Power Automate’s “Click download link on web page” action works only in Internet Explorer and directs users to HTTP actions; Internet Explorer has reached end of lifecycle. Security and reliability checks
- Treat page content as untrusted. A page can contain instructions that try to steer an agent toward uploading an unintended file. Allow only task-approved files and destinations.
- Validate paths before upload. Resolve traversal components and symlinks, enforce an allowlist, and avoid exposing broad directories or credentials to a session with optional upload or arbitrary-code capabilities.
- Separate incoming and outgoing files. Keeping downloads outside the upload-eligible directory reduces the chance that later page instructions can cause an agent to send a newly retrieved file elsewhere.
- Check policy and oversight features. AWS describes Bedrock AgentCore Browser as a containerized browser environment with session isolation, live viewing, CloudTrail logging, and session replay. These can support oversight but do not replace task-specific file authorization. AWS Bedrock AgentCore Browser
- Do not generalize a security study to every product. The 2025 preprint Mind the Web: The Security of Web Use Agents reports 80%–100% success rates across evaluated attacks and models under the study’s tested conditions. That figure describes the paper’s evaluation, not a general probability for all web agents or current products.

Can a web agent upload a file directly from my computer?
Only if its runtime provides a supported way to expose or stage that file. A browser’s ability to interact with a page does not itself grant access to your computer’s filesystem.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo to upload or download files on a website?
No. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it captures pages as images or PDFs rather than transferring arbitrary files through website forms.
