For most Android phones and Macs, use a USB cable and OpenMTP when you want to browse and copy files directly. Set the phone’s USB connection to File Transfer or MTP, then copy items between the phone and Mac in OpenMTP. For a quick nearby send, Quick Share can also reach a Mac through AirDrop on eligible Android devices.

Which Android-to-Mac transfer method should you use?

Method Best for What you need to know
USB with OpenMTP Large or repeated transfers, or browsing files on the phone from the Mac A data-capable cable, OpenMTP, and the phone set to file-transfer mode. The available guidance does not establish comparative transfer speeds.
Quick Share to AirDrop A quick nearby send from a supported Android phone Support depends on the Android device and software. Set the Mac’s AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes; the recipient must accept.
Quick Share QR-code route Sending to a Mac when the Android device lacks Quick Share-to-AirDrop support Scan a QR code on the Mac and download the files in a browser. Google documents a limit of up to 10 GB per 24 hours and a 24-hour download window.

Choose USB if you have a suitable cable and want a file-browser workflow. Choose a wireless option for a nearby send if your phone supports it. The QR route is an alternative when AirDrop interoperability is unavailable and a browser download is acceptable. No comparative speed benchmark is established for these methods.

Why does the Android phone only charge when connected to the Mac?

  • Check the USB mode. Unlock the phone and look for its USB notification or prompt. Select File Transfer, MTP, or Transfer files instead of a charging-only mode.

  • Try a different cable. Some USB cables can charge a phone but cannot transfer data. Google notes this as a general USB troubleshooting point; it is not a Mac-specific procedure. See Android Help’s USB troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Close other USB-accessing apps. OpenMTP advises closing other applications that may be reading USB devices when a connection conflict occurs.
